ericdrive...that first page is a beauty. The second one, not so much, by those nasty selvage tabs. Send those stamps to me and I'll relieve you of them and allow you to sleep better! lol French engraved stamps of that era are works of art, aren't they?

1 1/2" binders mostly, a couple of 2". I use Mystic Heirloom albums, so all my U.S. albums are green. Therefore, because I'm anal retentive, all binders for the same country are the same color. Canada is blue, UK is black, and France is white. I plan to use red for USSR (of course), and DDR is yet to be determined...whatever color the store has that I haven't used yet.

That is a beauty. And covering my favorite years of French stamps, too. I’m working with a France album I printed myself from Steiner pages. I sure wish I had stamp photos to go by but it’s working out for me.

Acquire new issues and search for affordable classics in U.S. Search for missing issues in Canada and UK. Build the new albums for France, DDR, and USSR, and add the stamps I have to them. And then realize that I don't have NEAR as many stamps for the new countries I decide to pursue as I thought I had.

Stories like these are what harden my stance of not buying from eBay. It doesn't seem worth the risk and effort. I do alright getting stamps by other means.

I don't actively collect FDCs, but I have a number of them in my collection. They didn't interest me at all for a long time, but eventually they caught my eye. Most are tucked away in a box with other odd and ends, but a few make it to an album. If something strikes my fancy, either by featuring a stamp I like or by an interesting cache, I'll keep it.

I'd like to say I'm longing for a Scott US #1 or #2 (I am), but I'd really like to have a Black Jack in my album.

Now that’s a tidy desk! I thought having got rid of 5000 stamps in three lots as giveaway I would see my desk again. False hope , I have been demolishing GB FDCs from the 1980s which have swamped the home market for years, can’t give them away as every “ my Dad’s collection” turns up more in a flooded market. Clipping ,soaking ,drying ,mounting on stock cards , scanning , and listing on eBay as a job lot of fine used 750 different GB stamps, 600 commems to 1989 plus 150 different Machins . at less than 3c each they must be worth $20 for 750 fine used to somebody , and take up a lot less space than 200 covers My desk still looks like a bomb site. It's actually my antique drafting table. I just set it up again, so it seemed perfect for sorting some stamps. Now if I can just keep my wife from piling random things that "need to be put away...I'll leave it here and do it later"...I'll be in good shape.

My wife is out running errands and I’m home doing laundry…and sorting stamps in my cave. DDR album project is under way and there’s a lot to sort. So far, I seem to have a lot from the 1980’s.

Dang. I want it, but I guess I wasn't fast enough. I'm right on the Great Lakes, so it would be a good one to have.
Just my luck as I don't check in as often on the weekend.

Today, I started bringing together everything to begin building my DDR album. I have a nice accumulation of stamps to get going, and freshly printed Steiner pages to put them on.
The past six months have been a roller coaster that has left me little time for stamps, beyond checking in here on the forum. My mother in law was diagnosed with brain cancer a year ago, and lost her battle on March 5th. My wife has spent most of that time caring for her full time, staying at her mom’s home along with her sister, right to the end. You might think having all that time to myself would be great stamp time, and I did too. Didn’t work out like that. I had to keep our house running, and help her when she needed it. The last month has been funeral, estate sale prep and successful execution, and now house sale prep. But, I’m finally finding a bit of time for me, as my wife does the same. So I eagerly look forward to assembling this new album. My wife is currently away for a few well earned days of rest with her sister. Im sure she’ll be thrilled with another stamp project scattered in my basement project space when she returns. I’ll post pics as it comes along. Donations to it accepted! Lol.

Well, I think I gave myself the answer to that question. I could be printing about 300 album pages. I'm pretty sure that the old Statesman album isn't anywhere near complete enough that I could pull those pages out to use.

I'm going to revive this thread and ask a follow-up question. I'm about to print out Steiner pages for my DDR album. But before I do that, I'm wondering...I have a Harris Statesman album tucked away that I picked up in a collection given to me. I'm not terribly familiar with the breadth of the album, but does it cover a substantial amount of DDR stamps that I could just use those pages as a stand alone album? I've accumulating quite a few DDR stamps, so perhaps I'm already beyond what the Statesman pages would cover? I'm sure I'll just go ahead and print the Steiner pages and use them, but I sure wish I had stamp images on the pages.

OK,there was one other instance. A friend introduce me to an elderly lady she knew who'd recently been widowed by her collector husband. My friend assured her i could be trusted, and the lady invited me to her home to help her gauge what her husband had left behind.
I walked into her house, I felt I'd entered an episode of Hoarders. There were binders everywhere. It was overwhelming. I was a bit disappointed to see that her husband had been saving recent stamps...I'd say since the 1980's. He had multiples of EVERYTHING in the sheets, panes, and sheetlets as they came from the postal service. I asked her where the older stuff was. There were a couple of small stock books that she directed me to. They were full of plate blocks from the 1940's to the 1970's. However, many were damaged: either stuck to each other or the backing paper they were stored against. That was it...no number 1's or number 2's, no Black Jacks, no hidden Columbians that I was hoping to offer to buy from her.
I have my own hoard of modern material, so the stacks of panes were really of no interest for my own collection. I explained to her what she had, and was honest with her on values. She was disappointed and then a bit angry. She was sure her husband had left her a small fortune. I gave her the name and number of a dealer I trusted so she could contact him about unburdening herself of the collection. I don't know she ultimately did.
She expressed her gratitude to me for my help and honesty by offering me an item that I had noted to her I found very interesting: the uncut press sheet of Space Exploration hologram stamps from 2000. I showed her in my catalog what it was worth, but she insisted I take it. I also walked away with the stock books of old plate blocks. I salvaged about two thirds of them. Not sure what I'll do with them. Postage, most likely, as many have disturbed gum on the back.
Again, I feel good that i was honest with the woman. It would have been easy to take advantage of her, but my conscience wouldn't allow it.

This has only happened to me once. The father of my good friend passed away. I knew his dad was a stamp collector, and I'd gotten a small peek as his collection shortly after he passed. It became a running joke that I was always asking my friend, and his mother (who knew me well), when was I going to get his dad's stamp collection.
After a number of years, my buddy told me that his mom had indeed decided to hand the collection over to me. Dad had saved the annual U.S. collections with the binders and stamps, along with the rest of his collection. She was going to give one to each grandchild that coincided with the year they were born. I could have the rest.
I went to her house to pick it up, and she sat with me as I gave things a quick look over before I packed it up to take home. I took a U.S. catalog along, just in case. I found in the collection the Legends of the West sheet with the error. I consulted my catalog, confirmed it, showed it to her, and told her to keep that. I've never regretted doing that.
I've inherited a few other collections over the years since. I've found a few treasures, but nothing worth as much as the Legends sheet is. It's not huge sum, but I couldn't in good conscience not tell her. Who knows. Some day when she passes, I may still end up with it.

I have a great number of stamps from these countries, but I've never developed much interest in pursuing them. Other than a Brazil Zeppelin stamp I have, I don't have much desire to collect them for reasons I can't explain. So there they sit.

First glance: 519 Highland avenue in Toledo is at the north end of the neighborhood known as the Old West End. It is considered to be the largest neighborhood of late Victorian, Edwardian, and Arts & Crafts homes east of the Mississippi. At the time it was being construction in the 1880’s and 1890’s, it was quite the affluent place to live. The main part of the neighborhood is still beautiful, well kept homes. Highland avenue, however, is now a kind of rough, not nearly as nice as the rest of the area. At the time of the postcard in 1933, it was still near the western edge of the city. There were smaller neighborhoods west of there that supported the huge Willys Overland car factory, which became the Jeep factory during the war. It was originally a really nice suburb. Now, it’s inner city.

Very interesting thread, Darrin ( darkormex), thanks for starting it! I note that the last postcard is addressed to 519 Highland Avenue in Toledo, Ohio. I lived in Toledo for several years of my life, but that was quite a while ago. I wonder if daveg28, who lives there now, might be able to tell us more about that location. I did a Google Maps search, and it looks like there is an old house there now. Anyway, just musing about the story! Interesting! I love researching old homes here in Toledo, so I’ll look into it and report back. Bear with me, because I’m dealing with my mother in law passing away yesterday. But I’ll find what I can.

Today, the local stamp club held their annual winter stamp expo. I made sure I didn’t go with a lot of money, but I spent the little it had. I got these three souvenir sheets that were missing from my collection. So that’s three more annoying blank spaces taken care of.
