And a couple more V for Victory sheets from Frederick H. Dietz and Ludwig Staehle. The first commemorating Columbus Day, 1942 with the V for Victory in the lower left corner and the 1942 Victory sheet issued to coincide with the issuance of the Win the War stamp of 1942, Sc. 905 Thanks for posting these. I have both labels, but I keep them in my Staehle FDC collection. Quick question: Does your Columbus label have gum? I have several of these, but they are all ungummed. I was wondering if they were issued this way.

A colorful stamp from the American Defence (Defense) Society trying to encourage the U.S. to become engaged in WWI. The American Defence Society was a political group founded in 1915 for the sole purpose of advocating the U.S. get involved in WWI against Germany. It also advocated against the Bolsheviks in Russia in 1917. The group pretty much kept a low profile after that, but later re-emerged to advocate for U.S. involvement in WWII.
Overall, a nice design, but it suffers from weak printing by offset lithography.

de61 That is one lovely design. Stunning even ! Thanks - I love the design, too. I only wish it was produced with a tighter litho screen. The dot pattern is, unfortunately, similar to that used in comic books. The artists are listed near the lower right side, but the printing isn't clear enough to make them out. I purchased this from a local stamp dealer in the 1990s.

An unusual pro-revolution propaganda label from Cuba, probably from the 1950s. It is cancelled, so it went through the mails.

Some information just come to hand on this label. Arabian political paraphilately: 3-color illustrated label for Martyrs' Day (Lebanon and Syria), depicting the flags of Syria, Lebanon and the Pan-Arab flag (either of the Syrian Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or the Palestine Liberation Organization) + images of the Christian Church of the Holy Sepulchre (left) & Moslem Dome of the Rock ('Qubbat al-Sakhrah') shrine (right) - both in Jerusalem; the Arabic legend above reads "The day of Lebanon and Syria", and below the images "The red bleeding freedom has a door that is knocking from each wounded hand". Although the Syrian flag is upside-down, the version depicted here would date the label to either the 1950's (up to 1958) or 1961-64 (the Syrian flag changed in 1963 and the PLO adopted its flag in 1964). The label refers to the national holiday commemorating the Syrian and Lebanese Moslem and Christian nationalists executed in Damascus and Beirut on May 6, 1916 by Jamal Pasha, the Ottoman Governor of "Greater Syria" (which in that time included the area of Palestine/Holyland). Here is the same label but in red only. Whether it is a variety or just a copy it is hard to tell but I'll go with the latter for now.

In time for Memorial Day, following is a sheet of 20 stamps, circa 1935, for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Buddy Poppy campaign. History of the Buddy Poppy from the VFW website: "Before Memorial Day in 1922, we conducted our first poppy distribution, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, as it remains today. During our 1923 encampment, we decided that VFW "Buddy"® Poppies would be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with financial assistance. The next year, disabled veterans at the Buddy Poppy factory in Pittsburgh assembled VFW Buddy Poppies. The designation "Buddy Poppy" was adopted at that time. In February 1924, we registered the name Buddy Poppy with the U.S. Patent Office. A certificate was issued on May 20, 1924, granting our organization all trademark rights in the name of Buddy under the classification of artificial flowers. We've made that trademark a guarantee that all poppies bearing that name and the VFW label are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans. No other organization, firm or individual can legally use the name Buddy Poppy. Today, our Buddy Poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home For Children."

Bought this from ebay. It was listed as " USA Great Britain Governor's National War Fund Service Men Dependants Cinderella," rather a mouthful indicating the seller did not know what it was or how to list it . "Governor-General" indicates one of areas of the Empire which achieved self governing status as a "Dominion" with a Governor-General as the King's representative eg Australia , Canada, Newfoundland for a time , New Zealand, South Africa , Ceylon and India later, Now if the little animal at the top is a "Springbok" then this must be South African , but WWI or WWII ? Anyone confirm?

I agree, South African and WWI, see this excellent wide ranging wide ranging pdf by Anri Delport entitled ‘Stumbling on Civvy Street’: The re-adjustment of white South African war veterans to life in post-war society: www.ajol.info/index.php/smsajms/article/view/151028/140606 , specifically p126 (don't worry, it begins on page 111).

Nice to get this on a cover Scotland to Sweden 1915. It is sent to a Fru Doktor at the Allmanna sjukhusset (General Hospital) Malmo from Wemyss Bay Hydropathic (another hospital) which had been commandeered for recuperation of war wounded

The artist Rockwell Kent is known to Christmas Seal collectors as the designer of the 1939 Seal. He also designed several other Cinderella stamps during his long and productive life. Among the rarest is this poster stamp for the Harry Bridges Defense Fund. Harry Bridges was the head of the International Longshoreman's and Warehouse Union for many years. He was also a Communist and not an American citizen. The United States government attempted to deport him, and the union created a defense fund for him. Kent designed a poster, that was adopted for this stamp. A checklist by the Kent scholar Robert Rightmire of Kent's Cinderella stamp designs, including those that were not produced, has been published exclusively on The Rockwell Kent Forum. www.rockwellkent.us. Here is the stamp. Here is the poster. Here is the stamp in a longshoreman's dues book.

To commemorate the passing of PFLP leader, Ahmed Jibril, last Wednesday I am posting a few Propaganda issues from the late 1960's-early 70's when his terrorist organization was at their most active. Well designed, if I can say that about such items, but not all of them well-timed issues ! The top one shows the blowing up (supposedly) of the El Al Airline (219, Amsterdam-New York) after landing at Dawson's Field in Zarqa, Jordan. One of 4 hijackings by the PFLP on September 6th, 1970. At least that was the plan and which leads me to believe the stamp was issued BEFORE the hijackings !! Whilst the other 3 were successful (in part), the hijackers of the El Al flight were apprehended and the flight was diverted to London. Nicaraguan Terrorist Patrick Arguello was killed and his partner Leila Khaled was arrested and interned in the UK. I'll leave you to imagine what the other three stamps depict ! The bottom one is not inscribed in English. All are valued at 5 Fils, the currency of Jordan where the PFLP had a Training camp. Jibril died in Hospital in Damascus from a long-time heart problem. He was 83.

........................................................Niaraguan Terrorist Patrick Arguello was killed and his partner Leila Khaled was arrested and interred in the UK. Smiling at predictive spelling Michael presumably Arguello was INTERRED and Khaled was INTERNED , we are a liberal society here and as far as I know, have stopped burying folks alive !

By coincidence, I can now write 'interred' !! ( vikingeck) Seriously, it is a sad and solemn way to urge the population to 'stop buying German Goods' one of many such propaganda issues during the world wars. A grieving widow dressed in black, her Soldiers' hat sitting on the cross. Lots of atmosphere.

I have seen these WWII-era German-produced propaganda postcards before. I may have one somewhere (uncancelled) as I think I picked one up years ago, for maybe five bucks or so. The one above, however, has apparently been mailed from Berlin, evidenced by the machine cancel dated 11 June 1940. The undenominated "indicia" portrays British Prime Minister Winston Churchill chomping a cigar. There is a smashed warship on his head. Inside the simulated perforations where the face value might appear it reads "Value Not one penny!" It is available on eBay (item #404056288147) and the auction ends early Monday Dec. 26 2022 if anyone wants to join in the bidding. It's presently at US$12.50 just a bit rich for my taste. Intriguing nonetheless!!! With five days to go, it may go for quite a bit more. Anyone care to speculate what the ending sale price will be? I will post the result next week.

I did find these through an online search.....two of which may or may not have actually been postmarked contemporaneously. The one I originally posted DOES look like a genuine usage.
