Unknown I cannot even recognise the script. Armenian and Cyrillic - Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. Compare the script on the coat of arms of Yerevan. Edit - looks like it's a label for the Hrazdan Hotel (found by searching for "Gostinicha Razdan", transliteration of the Cyrillic). Ryan

Obviously, I am a novice at searching Google. I spent hours with no results. Thanks Steve. Could you possibly show me how to get to the part in the Cuban site? All I have is A-Z which would take hours of searching I make it, that the labels originated in Spain, poss Zaragosa, but why have German as the first quotation?

rod222I searched on "International Philatelic Exchange" with the phrase in quotes. The Cuesta bibliography was on the second page of results. Open the bibliography here and then use your browser's Find function (I use Chrome) using the search term International Philatelic Exchange. One citation is on page F-4 and the other on F-5.

I will no doubt be posting a lot here in the coming weeks, given that I have so many mysteries staring up at me. The first one is not as much a mystery as forgetfulness on my part for I have read about the sheet but cannot remember where !! I believe there are similarities to the reproduction used by Kenmore Stamp Company for a 1940 celebration sheet but that's a wild guess !!
anyone ?
The sheet came from the leftover stock of Mike Sartori, Cinderella dealer who once did brisk business on Charing Cross station in London !

I can now answer my own question and, of course, I also remember where I saw it.........it's an exhibition item !!!! This is a Proof Sheet for the 1940 Penny Black Souvenir sheet which was sold by the organizers of the Adhesive Stamp Exhibition, held at the Bournemouth Pavilion from May 6th-14th. The Exhibition followed on from the British Philatelic Congress held at the Royal Bath Hotel, Bournemouth from May 3rd-6th. The Congress souvenir sheet also featured a Penny Black reproduction and to save money during wartime, the same plate was used. Both events were organized by the Postal History Society-President Mr.Robson Lowe ! I was looking through my Congress material and spotted a similarity with the PB head and popped in the catalogue and there it was !! I do not have a copy of the Exhibition sheet and did not think about comparing it to the Congress items....silly me ! The good news is that it appears I got bargain because only a small number of proof sheets were printed and none were available to the public. I paid 10% of the market price !!
Londonbus1
P.S. I had not covered the Bournemouth Exhibition because I have, or rather had, no items to show. Now I'll be off in search of the finished sheet !!

Rod, your souvenir sheet appears to be a cinderella commemorating the Fall 1984 visit of Japanese youth to China. Hopefully somebody can confirm or correct. At least the first part of the text does indicate Sino-Japanese Youth Friendship...
China did issue a commemorative set of 3 for this event. I have not seen this cinderella before. Nice piece!

Glad you were able to find the final ID. Yes, there are hundreds of these Chinese souvenir sheet "cinderellas" issued by a variety of printers. Some of them are actually based on original stamp designs, but without the denomination.
Thanks for the link!

This is an advertisement for William Stokes, teacher of memory. He claimed to be able to teach his pupils his technique in just 3 hours. I presume you would get his course post free for fourteen stamps.

rod222 , Thanks! Now I know what the initials in the upper right corner represented...the General Commission for Repatriated Prisoners of War, a Vichy France entity aimed at convincing freed POWs to collaborate with the Germans (Source: Americans in Paris: Life and Death Under Nazi Occupation by Charles Glass).

I don't have a complete or even part complete book No.2 but I do have a cover.
This one has been validated by an Office of Price Administration Label. A later Ration Book [No.3] also included the Tank/Cannon/Motor Boat/Plane types but the other coupons were different.

Now I have another 'Penny Black' question !
I have found this and would like to know if anyone has seen it before or knows where it comes from. Most likely produced for the centenary in 1940 as stated, it feels 'old'.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Not seen it before. curiosity: if you focus looking on the Maltese Cross, then look at the rest of the item, you will see a Maltese cross watermark. Image recognition has no results.

The " golliwogg" was a black fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton that appeared in children's books in the late 19th century. I haven't been able to determine the origin or era of this seemingly racist stamp but the English text narrows the likely field of suspects.

Looks a lot like the 1920 French perfume - these golliwogs comes in 1000's of varieties and are collectible Robertson's Jam of the UK produce a jam with the character on the bottle. The demand was so high he went on to produce dolls, jewelry, clothing, sport badges, games and many other items up to 2002

In the mean time, here's another head scratcher.
La creche.
Right now I'm leaning toward a charity seal issued in the 1910's to 1940's in Quebec. There was an organization there called "La Creche Saint Vincent de Paul" which operated as an orphanage. It was in fact the largest orphanage in the province. They were constantly trying to raise money to help out the orphans. The stamp above has "La Creche" which would have been the nickname of the organization. In French, "creche" means a crib or day nursery. So it's from a French-speaking country. Denomination is 1 cent (so it is probably not France, or Belgium, which would have used centimes). Again this points to Quebec. I have seen a similar "La creche" stamp in red with 5 cents denomination in green. And I have also seen another Quebec charity stamp that came in 1 cent and 5 cent denominations. But the thing that really throws me off is the logo: an all seeing eye above, a boat moored to a large anchor below, and in the middle, three angels with wings. I haven't been able to tie that logo down to the "Creche Saint Vincent de Paul" organization, whose logo was actually a white cross on a blue shield. Finally, another clue is the cancellation: 5 wavy lines, with the bottom two interrupted by a "T", and the second one interrupted by what looks like an "I". Most wavy line cancellations from Canada have 7 lines, and I have not seen any with these types of interruptions except for the "D" cancellation from Toronto. Design size is 25 x 26.5 mm. Any thoughts? Update on this stamp from page 3 of this thread.
Definitely Quebec City, and dates to 1910 or 1911. Mystery finally solved!
