What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

It is actually French. The full postmark says Croix Rouge Francaise Section Philatelique, with a red cross in the centre, and I'd say it's WWI vintage Wow, Dave, thank you so much! So, do you know if this stamp is part of series or anything else about it, or can you point me to somewhere to learn more? Thanks again!

Not sure what the background is (Yosemite Valley?) - or the purpose (looks almost like open top "tour" vehicles") found the two in a small manilla envelope, no writing.... no idea from the automomiles = from the photo is from the 1920-30's more of a curiosity (could be an early Where's Waldo?!?)

I don't know what stamp that is, but this clue might help you hunt it up. That looks like the Glacier National Park red bus.

stevew I've just looked at a number of early photos of Galcier Nat'l Park and the busses- they look similar, but the "scenery" doesn't quite match renden - Cinderellas or collosal errors(!)...(no such luck) Looked at Heych Hetchy (Yosemite) before it was flooded...but doesn't quite look right either. Mystery (Cinderella) stamps

If it is a photo of Glacier National Park then you can place a bet on the Going-To-The-Sun Road! There are plenty of good photos around showing the road shortly after opening day when the plowing is complete - here's an ancient one I've had in my favourites folder for a long time. Ryan

Ryan i saw that, and another 30 or 40 from several sites, but the mount 'backdrops' didn't match- for now i'm content with "a red ciderella of a red bus tour" late 20's by the looks of the vehilcle grills

Well, the road is plenty long, 50 miles or so - there will be many views not easy to find more than once.

Oh, but I have been looking. I must have spent an hour going through the possibilities yesterday evening but so far have nothing to report. Sometimes it is like this with Cinderellas........which is why they are so much fun !! But the search will continue. The challenge is always the best part ! We have a long-running thread in the Cinderella section for such questions and mysteries.

An unperforated Cinderella: " Garden Art / Exhibit / Arts & Crafts Building / Lindenstrasse Inc." Since there is a Lindenstrasse in Berlin, but not in Vienna, I am leaning towards the above being from Germany. Any thoughts?

" Garden Art / Exhibit / Arts & Crafts Building / Lindenstrasse Inc." Since there is a Lindenstrasse in Berlin, but not in Vienna, I am leaning towards the above being from Germany. Any thoughts? There was an arts exhibition house owned by Georg Hulbe located on Lindenstrasse in Hamburg - perhaps that was the site of this exhibition. At this link you can find some machine translations of German Wikipedia pages about Hulbe. The main thrust of the linked article is to a newer house built in 1910-1911 - the Lindenstrasse house was his building prior to the newer one shown there. Ryan

Thank you Ryan, riddle solved...Hamburg, Germany it is! Most Cinderellas I've seen have a bit more information, such as a year (especially if for a specific Exhibition, fair) or a town or other location name. Or otherwise some product or service being advertised. Luckily the one above at least had the Lindenstrasse site as a clue!!!
As the one I have is not perforated, one-colored, and not overly fancy I assume there was less money spent on producing them, as German Cinderellas are often much more colorful or elaborate!

These must be early Swiss PTT trial stamps produced to test their stamp printing presses. They depict Swiss Alpine scenes and tourism. Quite similar to this one:
Maloja Pass on the Engandine Valley (close to Sankt Moritz), Graubungen-Switzerland.

I've been stuck in St. Moritz before, waiting for the Maloja (or the Julier or the Bernina or any other pass) to open up after a heavy snowfall. It's almost always sunny in St. Moritz but it's also a ski resort, so simple math tells you that on the days when there is snow instead of sun, there's a LOT of snow. And when the passes are finally open and you can drive out, when you look along the side of the road, the cross-country ski trails will already be laid out ... those track-laying machines must move faster than the plows!

Stygia or The Nation of The Stygians I picked up this lot quite recently, they looked interesting but haven't been able to find out much more. I did find an online catalogue that mentioned them but gave no further information. Sounds like a religious/philanthropic organisation? There does seem to be a Torun in Wisconsin and also in Poland! Well, the Stigia lagoon was the door of Greek Hades (or Hell) the bank was warded by a three heads dog "Cancerberus" (if I remember well) being written in English and despite the European look of the cinderella, it might well meam a club of cultivated, wealthy American philanthrops.

The river Styx had to be crossed to enter the underworld. ..
I knew of it in another context , King James VI and I , in his treatise 1603 condemning Tobacco calls it “ A custome lothsome to the eye , hatefull to the nose, harmefull to the Braine, dangerous to the lungs, and in the Blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stygian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse” It doesn’t sound like a very friendly choice of name whatever they offer members?

Further searches via internet suggest a nation of Stygians appears around 1934 in the fictional writings of Robert E Howard in his Sword and Sorcery genre stories of Conan the Barbarian , but that does not seem to connect with a founding in1892.and why there would be a 50th Halor liud whatever that is, in 1942

This is not an attempt to "guess" the source of the cinderellas, but some background info on issues raised in follow-up posts. In the US, at least, it is not rare for charitable/academic/social organizations to combine secrecy with publicity (hence, "initiation rites") and even occultic symbols -- when done so, usually in jest, but in extremely rare instances truly rather... Certainly the concept of "Stygian darkness", occasionally referred to especially in the early 20th Century in the US, plays in well with the jestful use of occultic concepts/symbols into organization "image or secrecy". While I've never specifically heard of Styx/Stygia used in organizational context, there are plenty of examples of other Greek/Egyptian... "occultic" usages in some organizations (especially among college student organizations).

Thanks for everyone's contribution. Anyway, we can be as sure as we can be that the stamps are American and I'll post the image in USA Cinderellas. Having done all this research, I feel an affinity with The Nation of the Stygians and, as keeper of the stamps, I'm thinking of reviving it and naming myself as Grand Poobah
