Admin: May we have a sub-board for "Mutilated Stationery :Worldwide " please ? One of my great passions. Wrappers, Picture Postcards, Postcards, Stationery, Aerogrammes. Anything, but ephemera MUST have been attacked by scissors.

Cape of Good Hope. A previous custodian of this piece, decided to repair the design by pen and ink.

Do these meet the "attacked by scissors" criteria?

Steve exclaimed "Do these meet the "attacked by scissors" criteria?"
Fabulous, indeed they do, but what is more amazing.... (drum roll)... What in heavens, is an Australian "N.S.W" postmark, doing, on a 2c US Postage?
That is a screamer.

In one of the great English expression absurdities, collectors call these "Cut Squares"
That's up there with the square "Boxing Ring"

Good catch Rod -- I would have never identified the postmark. Too bad we don't have the entire, it might have provided the answer.

a Cape of Good Hope newspaper wrapper (previously posted). Not trimmed too closely (so it may be pushing the envelope - YES, I said it!).

And some Canadian. Poor Queen Vic has not been ravaged by scissors, so much as time.

James blurted "Some more American victims. "
May we have a close up of the 2c Washington please? U63? The same as the example of Steve's with the NSW pmk.
Cut Squares should ideally have 1/4 inch (squared) border around the impression, if that was so, your example would be worth CV $95 ?

erm....you mean this one? Are you suggesting that this is a NSW cancel. How can you tell, by the grain of the cork? Mr Cork?

Hmmm, nope, no cruise, I was thinking it may be the "3.5 links" model Steve had a 2 cents similar. The NSW pmk was on the 10c (Overseas?)

Austria Postal Card ? (on heavy stock) Postmarked Strakonitz on September 7, 1883? (or July 9, 1883) Seeing as how we have a Mutilated Postal Stationary board, what are your views on breaking this thread down into multiple threads by country of issue?

Steve postulated : "Seeing as how we have a Mutilated Postal Stationary board, what are your views on breaking this thread down into multiple threads by country of issue?" OK for me, I had original misgivings about placing them under country of origin, because after several years of posting, they will get lost in the depth.

Austria Postal Card ? (on heavy stock) Postmarked Strakonitz on September 7, 1883? (or July 9, 1883) Most Austrian postmarks I've seen from this era have the day first, then the month and year. So it's likely July 9. For another example of this postcard, see current ebay item 141112211323.

James uttered "Do mutilated meters count. This First World War Canadian Field Post stamp has certain been through the wars!
Absolutely, and a fine example, the wielder of the shears apparently was taken by the CDS, but subsidiary markings were dealt with.
December 11th, possibly a lad at the front, writing home for Christmas.
PS: Don't think it is a meter, all the same James.

Not a meter, you are correct of course Rod. Poor choice of words. Previous research by a member on SCF (can't remember who) placed this APO mark at Etaples France.

Let me make it up, so to speak. Here's a US meter from New York, plus a couple of postal cutouts from the Philippines (US Admin)

And some British cut 'squares', no longer in my possession. Sold in a batch a couple of years ago on flea-bay.

Here is a postal card from Belgium (somewhere in Hainaut province). Even before the scissors attack there was another attempt on the card -- the strike of the handstamp was made with such force that it left a raised impression on the card's reverse.

Great! I'll purloin your example for my records
Your New York Mute Meter, .04c what would that signify, bulk mailing of a circular?

Rodney excogitated: Your New York Mute Meter, .04c what would that signify, bulk mailing of a circular?
At the very bottom of the piece, one can make out the typewritten word 'Library'. I can only speculate that this may be a book or publication rate, and, as you suggest, a circular, magazine, newspaper, book, publication of some kind was sent to this mystery library.
