What I collect: Danish area Cinderellas
|
Post by maerkat on Feb 22, 2014 15:30:25 GMT
As a cinderella dealer I am always on the lookout for new literature on revenues, poster stamps, charity seals, etc. I have found a few great sources for many titles, both current and out of print. Charles Kiddle is a world renowned expert on Poster Stamps and similar cinderellas. He has authored dozens of catalogs on poster stamps. The one illustrated here covers the poster stamps produced by iconic graphic artist Ludwig Hohlwein. Charles Kiddle has a website at www.posterstamps.org.uk/index.php where his catalogs are available.

Went to KAPEX today, the Kawartha Stamp Club's annual show, back in my home town. I sought out one of the dealers that really helped me get started searching for a long sought after text for my collection. I found a sweet copy, with the original dust cover, of The Postage Stamps and Postal History of Canada, by Winthrop S. Boggs, Volume 1 from 1949. I've heard of this book being reffered to as the bible for Canadian postal history. Very happy to add it to my collection!

O.K. so today the cd for SSJB arrived drove like a madman through the rain to get home and pop in in the drive. When it came up it's all in French and guess who is less than fluent in that dialect. From pictures I see many varieties exist but unable to read most of description.I think there are enough pictures to at least put them in order.Need the Zuzu touch as I'm sure there must be a way to put it right but, not in my toolbox.

Perhaps you can try copying the French descriptions and pasting them into Google Translate.

Is it PDF? My suggestion would be the same as Steve's. Just do a bit at a time.

My library is puny. All I have is a 1992 Unitrade, a couple how to collect stamps books (some dating back to the 60's), a 1962 Harris catalog (price list for their packets and more complete listing for US) and a 1973 CWS Stamps of the World Identifier. I also have a 1952 Saco Stamp Finder but it is a circle thing and not a book. I also have two books about Canadian admirals and a Canadian precancel book on the way.

This can be as rewarding as collecting stamps, collecting literature. I have 3 avenues I shop at the Western Australian Red Cross stamp shop, stamp magazines a few pennies. I attend the annual Western Australian book sell off, in aid of charities. Stamp books never attract attention, and I get a shopping bag full for $5 -$10 (on the "hobbies" table) Ring my local library for book sales of discontinued books, Scott and Stanley Gibbons for a fraction. Being financially challenged is not such a big deal in philately, budgeting is though

I find a great alternative to fossicking through all the books in my library manually, scans of the covers help me to 1. organise my library. 2. flip through digitally, when looking for particular information that may be in a particular issue. Japanese postage stamps (1940) Teach yourself stamp collecting LN & M Williams 1972 History and Geography with Postage Stamps (Colonel Roberts) 1948

Rodney, that Zirkle book is still an important reference for Manchukuo. Sometimes hard to find it at all. If you happened to snag it at a decent price, even better!
If I'm recalling correctly, she also produced one on Korea, which I haven't been able to find. (Now, watch you come up with a link to it on eBay!)
Congrats!

Good reference material is hard to come by, cheaply, one has to have the patience of Job and wait for them to pop up occasionally on the web . Your words are indeed those of a wise, frugal philatelist, Rodney. My belated thanks for the links that you and Steve provided, both of which were feeling a little too spendy for me. If either of you (or anyone else) happens to stumble upon one in the $20-25 or so range, please let me know. It'll show up somewhere at sometime. -- Dave

Shall do Dave, I have been paying $8 for my books, double that to include shipping. $15 is about my limit. I have been eyeing off a Lithuania, but that is $15 with $20 shipping, must be hard bound. so I'll let that one slip by.
I noticed this morning my Vendor reimbursed me for $5 for overpaid shipping. There are still some gentlemen out there.
