Classic case of cinderella-itis looks like!

Just found this Cold War cinderella on the back of a non descript cover. The front sports a 5¢ QEII Wilding stamp with badly smudged Annapolis Royal NS cancel. Can't even make out the year. The city of origin is only discernible thanks to the corner card. Not really worth preserving, I don't think, so this little label may be destined for a soaking (I can hear the gasps already!).

I would suggest to keep scans of the front and back of the envelope if you do soak it. It may be the only link between this cinderella and the country and date of use in existence! It doesn't seem to be listed in the Mosbaugh catalog (USA). Here's a link for some background on the Ground Observer Corps. Definitely Canadian!

"Gasp!" why soak? At least, post scans of it on cover, so we can keep evidence.........................

Ha!! I knew when I posted that that someone here would blanch. As you can see, the cover is really nothing to write home, or anywhere else, about. Smeared cancel, stamp common as common can be. No extra markings. Really, the label is it's only redeeming quality. If I hadn't turned the thing over, it would have gone off to my dealer.

Ok, after coming back to this, you have - perhaps - caused me to change direction on this. Maybe a page in the album with a scan of the **yawn** front, show the back with the label, and some of the information on the GOC from the link cindyman provided. Oh! why am I so easily swayed by my peers?

Nice cover James, thanks for sharing. Without the cover it's just a little cinderella lost in time and space. The cover adds so much more information, including size. Even if it had a Bluenose on the front, I'd flip it over to display the cinderella on the back! By the way, it's the first and only Canadian Cold War cindy I've ever seen! ps. Here's an image of the stamp and cover as mentioned in the above thread:

CANADIAN ORDNANCE CORPS. In recognition of their services during WW1, the COC were granted 'Royal' Status by King George V in 1919 and became the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. I date this poster stamp between 1907-1919. If someone has it listed anywhere...... More here: www.rcocassn.com/EDITED: Forgot to mention, in my haste to bed, that this lovely Flag item was kindly sent to me by frog. A nice surprise, thanks my friend.

This was one of twenty different stamps featuring Canadian WWI regiments produced by Delandre about 1916. Here are some of the others:

For what it's worth the WIPEX souvenir sheets from 1966 and 1968 also appear to be "no gum".

In 1969, the Winnipeg Philatelic Society issued an interesting souvenir sheet featuring the house of Louis Riel, and also a facsimile of the famous "Riel essay" in green. Again the SS appears to be "no gum".

And finally in 1970, the Winnipeg Philatelic Society and the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada teamed up for the MANIPEX 70 exhibition. Again the SS appears to be "no gum". Perforated and imperforate varieties of the SS exist.

This ordinary Canadian cover wouldn't have caught my attention (it's not even cancelled!) were it not for the label on the back. Just purchased this at the North Toronto show, the dealer, couldn't tell me anything about the seal except he, for some reason, thought it was American and not Canadian. But the letter is mailed locally in the small town of Barrie. Maybe cindyman can i.d. it?

James, I'm jealous for those imperf CAPEX labels! Nice find! For the chiropractic stamp, it is indeed American, issued in 1942 (that's obvious!) by the National Chiropractic Association (Des Moines, Iowa). The NCA was also known as the American Chiropractic Association from 1922-1930, and again from 1963 to the present. The stamp is listed in the Mosbaugh catalog Section IX #100.05. It probably ended up on the back of a Barrie cover because the doctor was a member of the association. The Canadian Chiropractic Association wasn't formed until 1953. The NCA had enough Canadian members early on that it did its annual meeting in Toronto in 1938.

Sorry Mr Frog, I don't have any extras of the Casa Loma ESSO stamp. But this is what you should be looking for.
Incidentally, those ESSO stamps are quite scarce. There were minisheets issued for Ontario (12 stamps), Quebec (6), British Columbia (6), Nova Scotia (6), New Brunswick (1 seen), and Saskatchewan (1 seen), and probably others for other provinces. And each sheet could have a different slogan printed in the red box. For instance, for the Ontario sheet alone I've seen the following slogans: a. “Be Sure to Visit Orillia, Ontario” b. “Elgin Centennial / St. Thomas, Aug.3-10” c. “See Niagara Falls, Ont., Can.” d. “Spend Your Vacation at French River” e. “Be Sure to See Ontario” In other words, an almost endless variety, with plenty of opportunity to discover new ones. That's what makes cinderella collecting so much fun!!

Nice one Rod. I've added the Soeurs grises stamp to the listing. It's the 7th type I see, probably more out there. Do you have an image for the Caughnawaga stamp? It doesn't sound familiar. By the way, I'm finishing up the manuscript for the 2nd edition of the Field Guide to the Cinderella Stamps of Canada this week. Then it will go off to the printers. If there are any other "unlisted" Canadian cinderellas you would like to get included, now's the time to upload those images.

You gentlemen remind me, I meant to show you the page I did for this cindy I found on the back of a boring envelope. With cindyman's link (thanks to the postalhistorycorner.com) and all of your encouragement, I've now done a couple of pages like this. Showing off the more interesting backside, sometimes it's our best feature!

It could have so easily returned unknown, to the shoebox. Now your label is forever logged, for all collectors in future years. Nice work!

Thanks Rod! That means a lot. You know, my mother would have said that the horse shoe on your PEI label is upside-down. All the luck is going to run out! I have heard that before, yet whenever one see's a horseshoe, hanging on a nail in the barn, it is always "upside down" My Mum would always freak, if I opened an umbrella indoors. I tend to reset cutlery, if I see two knives cross in the sink. Weird eh!
