...as opposed to Warwick The Author has spelt "Uley" incorrectly (sic : Ulley) The recipient, PEGLER, enjoys a name, perhaps derived from one prominent citizen Thomas Pegler in Uley AD 1609 Wincanton. Somerset About 20 Km from my hometown. wiki (sending those pesky Danes, packing) Prior to the Norman Conquest Wincanton was frequently the scene of battles between the Britons, Danes and Saxons. During the reign of Edmund Ironside, the English, under his command, defeated the Danes, forcing them to leave England.

Following on from some of the above items that were filling gaps, tonight's item is Sutton In Ashfield Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]Penny Post Office under Mansfield 1837 Under Alfreton 5 April 1839 Under Mansfield 1 August 1854 Money Order Office 1 March 1851 Savings Bank 16 September 1861 Telegraph Office 1870. Code used = SWC Under Nottingham 2 February 1891 Made a Post Town 22 April 1953 Changed from a BO to Franchise Post Office 10 March 1993 ------------------------------- Getting close to 84 percent illustrated and the number that still require a picture is slowly going down ... I am still giving some thought to the new section on the slogan postmarks, as I will need to make sure that the details can be tracked down in the easiest manner ... Once I have something in place, I will let people know and they can then tell me if it works or needs adjusting .. As always, thanks for the additions and happy searching ... Allan

Tonight's recent item from the database is from a limited choice as I have been putting some text together for the new section on slogan machine marks .. However ... I will go with Uley [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]I have already recorded for this office a period of use from the 2nd November 1905 to the 1st August 1912, (as multiple examples were offered, of which this was the clearest) So with this entry we already have use in the King Edward VII and King George V periods, and there are also two code letters at the top recorded - A and B Another large coffee needed, then if I feel up to it, I may do a little more on the text section Allan

Those pictures now added to the listing ... thanks If anyone wants to take a look at the start of the text for the GB slogans, it can be seen at philatelicweb.com/pmks/gbslogans.htmlThis first part of what will be the introduction text, shows how to tell the early machines apart - these being Universal Krag and Hey-Dolphin The next section will deal with the Triangle dies that have been noted earlier in this thread for those that are interested .... The section are intentionally fairly short with the intention to get across the basics needed to take this collecting area forward ... Any errors or comments / suggestions of any kind, please just post them up and we can discuss if things need to be changed ... Hope this all proves useful Allan

[Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]As far as I can tell, only in recent times has the exclamation mark appeared in the date stamps .... earlier examples show the place name without it Allan PS .... just realised it is 4-30am here ... so off to bed ...

How cool! Thanks again, Rod. zipperI am unsure if the address refers to "Lincoln's Inn" Law building, or the group of housing surrounding the "square" or "green" "Lincoln's Inn Fields" One would assume, from a lack of further address details, the recipient would be a man of note, and well known in the area in 1814. The contents of the letter, may shed light upon that.

Tonight's item .... shopping festival slogan I have included the above in the database as the slogan / location needed to be added ..... The reason the slogan was not cropped down, was to allow the diamond mark on the front to remain visible, and this is now used in the text on slogan mark machines and details that I have been putting together. This page at philatelicweb.com/pmks/gbslogans.html now has the following sections ... The machines and the slogans that were used with them ... Later, single impression machines ... Triangular dies ... Diamond dies ... The Mis-Sort dies ... Paid dies ... Allocation of the dies ... All the above are illustrated where required to make the points easier to follow and there are still a few illustrations that are needed .... (hint..) The next part of the text will deal with the periods of use for slogans ... so still a little more writing to do Sorry that this means less items are being added, but I do feel it is important for collectors to have this information so that they can make their own judgement calls of what they have or are intending to buy. I think that sharing this information will make it easier for a lot of people and as such that makes it worthwhile ... Happy hunting ... Allan ---------------------- Edit ... The text section on periods of use is now in place .... Next section is Varieties ... Allan

Here is a version on cover ... [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]Here is a better scan of just the mark ... from another item with better quality Details on the london version as follows ... Machine roller used without a town die - Applied in red In the EC and WC districts of London there were separate apertures in posting boxes. One was for London & Abroad and the other was for Country mail. The reason for this was that mail for London and Abroad goes for sorting at King Edward building and the mail for the Country goes to Mount Pleasant If letters are posted in the wrong apertures they are liable to delay and these marks were used on occasions between the dates shown The dates shown in the database are 1927 - 1956 I will add the Country version later .... this was already in, so thought I would share an actual example Allan
