I went through 100 Penny Lilacs and 300 One Cent Red KE7th. Probably won't do this again, as I'm stuck with them, and I don't fancy them.

I'm beginning to like the Penny Lilacs. Perhaps it's how they look on the black pages, and because, after all, it's THE lady.
You can have the Kind Edward stamps if you want them. Was going to add them to whatever I put together for the Donation Auction. Speaking of which, I can't make myself get out of my chair and sort through the GB stamps. Am in a coma lately (and loving it).

Are you sure you don't want them, Rod? They won't fetch anything on the auction. I was just going to add them to get rid of them.

There is always the "great recycler" . . . the auction section.

I think the problem is that I prefer postmarks on covers.
And I don't like red.
Also, I'm not fond of the kings. Vicky was a hard act to follow.

OK ... taken a look at the one on the left and I think it is from Merrion in Ireland
Sadly, not enough of the mark is visible to make a definite identification .... but this is my best guess
------------------------------------------
I have now gone through all the other scans and added where possible items to the database. A number of entries have also had the details updated
My thanks for all the scans ... took some time, but I feel worthwhile

Tonight's recent entry to the database is St Johns Wood Sorting Office NW [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]This is device number 2 and now sits in the listing with device 4 ... so again probably another 2 at least to find ... Both used around the same period .... With all the other entries and checking, I am calling it a night ... Work will resume tomorrow .. Allan

For tonight's offering, I would like to show two recent additions to the database as they can be used to explain a point ... The first item is Woodford Green Essex ... [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]A new entry, but a fairly standard item from a universal machine, ( But having read the new section on slogans ... you all knew the type of machine ... right ... ) Some machines had continuous wavy lines and others, as shown above were broken in the center. On the split types, the central section could be placed with the central part of the bars, as shown, or with a paid die ... Above, another new entry showing the Paddington machine used with the paid die in the central section this allows collectors to have machine impressions in red as well as the normal black from the same office As always happy hunting .... The information in the database naturally requires the text as found on the various hand stamps to be entered as it appears. This is intentional as it allows the user to search for the details based on what they can see on the postmark in front of them. However, I am aware that some collectors have questions regarding some of the abbreviations that are use on the British postmarks, (in fact I get quite a number of emails on this), and as such thought that a listing would be useful ... This list covers many of the abbreviations that cause problems, but if you encounter any others that you feel should be added, please just shout with the details of the postmark in question and I will add it in The mark below, (just added), made me think about this point ... [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]To find the meaning there is a link on the main page and here is a direct link for ... philatelicweb.com/pmks/gbabbreviations.htmlHope this helps ... Tonight's offering from the new additions to the database is ... [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]Liverpool L S O This applied to a label affixed to the packet / parcel ... This also meant that the list of abbreviations had to be updated ... In addition, the section on slogans has also been updated with all the entries listed, (part way through 1925), now with the addition of prices for on cover examples ... Everything to this stage on this thread now in place, a number of revisions made and some general tidying up done to the listings .. Hope all are having fun with GB postmarks and along with me learning a little along the way .. Allan

Tonights item from the database is ... Pontrhydyfen [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]At the time this item was posted it was an office under Port Talbot, where the stamp was cancelled Office details ... Post Office under Taibach 15 June 1857 Under Port Talbot 1 November 1885 Money Order Office & Savings Bank 1 April 1886 RSO 1 April 1892 Under Port Talbot 2 July 1900 Telegraph Office 19 April 1910. Code used = PYD Closed 1 December 2006 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Everything to this stage with the exception of the 'Royal Mint' mark is now added. The later, I am still trying to track down some details, but if I can not find anything, it will be added as is and can be updated later The database has now reached 16,700 British entries, so most places should be able to be located - but there is still more to do ... The fun will continue as I still have a number of files to work through that I am sure will provide new items or at least a fair amount of revisions to what is already there Happy collecting as always ... Allan
