Finally got around to giving the database a looksee. WOW! What an amazing piece of work! I can't wait to get my used UK stamps and investigate their path through the mails. From my brief exploration of the site, however, I see I will need to allocate hours at a time (us OCD types become so absorbed in such endeavors, we lose complete track of time).
Thanks for all your hard work, Allan.

Any problems you encounter, just post an image in this thread and either I or someone else will no doubt help with routing, rates, offices etc etc Regards .. Allan

These hooded cancel postings [**edit - reference to previous posts which have been deleted due to broken image links] reinforce something that has always astounded me; the speed with which things were delivered in those days. Pre-airmail, obviously, yet mail posted in England in the afternoon on one day shows up in Germany the next. 100+ years later and I bet the mail doesn't travel that fast, not unless you're paying through the nose for some sort of FedEx-equivalent service.

Tonight's selected item from the new entries to the database is Saltash in Cornwall [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This item was added as it has the time at the top rather than a code letter as seen in the entry that is already in place Office details ... Fifth Clause Post 1807 Penny Post under Plymouth 1812 - recieving house No 2 Money Order Office 1 September 1852 RSO 1860 Numeral B91 allocated 1860 Savings Bank 23 December 1861 Telegraph Office 1870. Code used = SCW Changed to a Head Office 22 March 1891 Changed to a Salaried Sub-Office 30 June 1923 Changed to a Main Office 24 June 2013 Time for me to take a break and do some drawings for my other interest ... a railway carriage Allan

Tonight's entry is a single piece that created two entries in the database - Chiddingfold [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]What we see is that this office had at least two hand stamps The one without any details (date etc) was probably used as a name stamp for registered labels etc The example with the date, would be used in the normal manner Office details Post Office under Godalming 1845 Money Order Office & Savings Bank 2 November 1874 Telegraph Office 21 October 1890. Code used = CDF Another gap filled and a little more information .... Allan

I have been doing a bit of house keeping on the database. Much of this is behind the scenes items but one item that effects the search option has also been altered ... This is the search by year option, which if left blank reverted to the earliest date in the database .... this was 1705 Following the additions made over the past weeks, this has now been altered and the earliest possible date is now 1661 So the database now covers over 350 years of postmarks ... I have had a request for a search option for the telegraphic codes such as those used in the triangular dies so that a telegraph code for any office can be traced as the office details are added This is possible, but will require a little thought but I hope to be able to get something in place fairly soon .... With all the additions over the past weeks, the database now stands at over 84.3 percent of the British marks illustrated and the number of listed items that still require a scan is down to 3,576, so the targets for this year now seem a little more possible ... Once again my thanks to everyone who has helped both on this thread and by email .... without this help the task would be so much greater ... GBU all ... Allan

Sorry for the lack of posts, I am very busy with some other issues at the moment ... but will do my best to stay on top of all this
