Farnborough, Hants (Hampshire) on 15 March 1890 I hope this one wasn't already posted, but there are just too many in the thread to check them all now! I wanted to contribute a little something, anyway.... It was not in the database .... but it is now
Thanks ... Allan

The latest additions to the database include ... [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]Northampton 570 - duplex on one stamp and the numeral on the other ... not uncommon to find this type of use at various locations ... Both types listed ... Whilst updating details on Liverpool marks already in the database one scan also provided this forwarding agents cachet This now added to the special marks section work will continue ....

Everything to this stage now added to the database - either as new additions or updates
Now over 18,640 British marks listed and with some of the gaps filled - under 3,400 that still require a picture ...

Hastings Sussex 7 OCT 1947 - this does look like a machine head but there was no indication of slogan I am also certain that this is part of a machine cancellation [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]Note the distance between the CDS and the wavy lines which allows for a correctly placed stamp to be stamped with the CDS only

If it is OK with you I'd like to add another cancel (maybe not a postmark?) and beg for insight into it's origin. Mods..let me know if this belongs in another thread and I'll try to move it.

What I think we need is opinions on what the number is ...
I first thought 488 then when I looked again thought 408
Once we get that confirmed I will get it in place

I concur 408.

Thanks ... added to the database ....
These marks were used at offices to cancel stamps that had not been obliterated elsewhere - thus this may be mail in transit through the location or originating / arrival mail
The numbers followed the same numbers as the Victorian barred numerals

Hello Allan - you may remember me from StampBoards a few years ago; I found "a few" early postmarks you had never seen, and you put them in your database. Here are 18 cancels, part of an eBay lot. I realize they are common towns, but you may see a new style. Any of them you want a larger image, I'll post a copy here, or directly to you, upon request. Ignore the mint stamps in the top row.

That's a few really nice postmarks doug630!! Particularily the SOTN squared cancel from Ringwood. Anybody knows what the 'BYD' triangle postmark is?

Just a quick update on this project ....
There are now 18,670 British postmarks listed with over 16,340 illustrated
As well as a great number of additions, there has also been a lot of updates with regards to dates of use, code etc .. as well as a number of those without a picture having these now added Those that still require a picture now down to the last 3,390 items ...
In addition thee are also ...
226 USA postmarks 367 Canada postmarks and 2173 Australian postmarks
The USA and Canada items are all fully illustrated
The Australia postmarks was compiled from a list supplied a long time ago and contains entries without pictures. These will be either added to the listing where possible of the entries will be overwritten with new entries that do have a picture. In this way the listing will gradually become more fully illustrated and thus of more use to collectors ...
All this is very time consuming - but I hope that the results are more useful to those that use the database ...
Once again - my thanks to everyone who has suppled items / details for this project
Allan

Here is a "geographic encyclopedia" for the United States: www.PlacesNamed.comIf you want to see how comprehensive it is, type in the place name "Horton" and watch what it does. Maybe there is something similar for the UK, or other countries!

Here is another wonderful online resource that includes, among its many features, lists of British Commonwealth places and postmarks; it will take you several HOURS to explore all the information on this website: www.pbbooks.comFrom the home page, for our "postmark" purposes, scroll down to British Commonwealth Postmarks by Robert S. Cragg, or simply go directly to www.pbbooks.com/cr1.htm to bypass the home page. Here is a list of places currently covered: Reference Files (100% free to use) Aden Antigua & Barbados Bahamas Bechuanaland & Protectorate Bermuda British Columbia British Guiana British Honduras Brunei British Cameroon Basutoland - Lesotho Burma Cape of Good Hope Cayman Islands Ceylon Cook Islands Crete Cyprus Dominica Egypt & Used Abroad Falkland Islands Fiji Gilbert & Ellice Islands Gold Coast, Togoland Grenada Hong Kong Jamaica Jordan, Trans Kenya Lagos Malaya & States Malta & Gozo Mauritius Mesopotamia Montserrat Morocco Agencies Natal Nepal Newfoundland New Hebrides New Zealand Niger Coast, Oil Rivers Nigeria, Northern & Southern, TPO's North Borneo Orange River Colony, Orange Free State Palestine Papua & New Guinea Persian Gulf Rhodesia, Northers & Southern St. Christopher, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Lucia & St. Vincent Samoa Sarawak Sierra Leone Solomon Islands Somaliland Sudan Swaziland Tanganyika Tasmania Tonga Transvaal Trinidad Uganda Virgin Islands Western Australia Zanzibar & Zululand

This are also being saved and slowly added to the database with some already in place
Anyone interested in this area of collecting should take a look as the collection of scanned images is developing into a nice reference for collectors
Work is still taking place on the database with over 18,670 British marks now listed

Almost everything to this point now in place in the database ...
A few have been saved to my PC as I need to check the details a little deeper - this will happen in time ...
In addition - some of these filled gaps - so now just 3,382 without pictures that need to be found ....

Been one of those session with the database where almost everything I have been checking is already listed - so just a lot of updates to dates / periods of use as well as codes used etc etc ... That said - I have added a scan to a listing - so at least one gap less ... [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This is the latest listed space to be added ... Work will continue (as always) ....
