I hate when I'm stupid! I scanned it the way I received it. Should have opened it before scanning; must have been having an "out of brain experience."

I hate when I'm stupid! I scanned it the way I received it. Should have opened it before scanning; must have been having an "out of brain experience." Thanks. Interesting. Perhaps "Claim to the Ghuzni Prize Money" the letter refers to, were war gains from the fighting in Afghanistan. Nearly 200 years later we are still fighting there. Goodness me. Melt the guns and make ploughshares, please. wiki The First Anglo-Afghan War (also known as Auckland's Folly) was fought between the British East India Company and Afghanistan from 1839 to 1842, and ended in an overall Afghan victory. It is famous for the killing of 4,500 British and Indian soldiers, plus 12,000 of their camp followers, by Afghan tribal fighters, but the British defeated the Afghans in the concluding engagement. It was one of the first major conflicts during the Great Game, the 19th century competition for power and influence in Asia between the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire.

Victoria Docks SO E (SO = sorting office) E= East You have done it again Zipper You have smashed the EKU by 7 years (EKU = Earliest Known Use) Caveat That's if Allan includes squared circles in his database? (we shall need to check that) PS: Frances was not a keen user of the Question Mark ?

Sorry that I have been away for a while, as noted by another member, a lot of issues to work through and much still ongoing ...
That said, I have still been adding postmarks as I can, and everything on this thread with the exception of the pages with multiple places are now all listed in the database.
I will work through the pages, splitting the marks and adding the details as required over the next week or so
Still a great number of items on file that need to be checked, sorted, added etc ... so this will be expanding for a while yet
Allan

tallanentYay! Nice to see you back Allan, wishing you the very best of health. You have a cracking Philatelic site, one of the best on the internet, Love it. Long may you work on it. Question: EKU Earliest Known Use : Is that pertinent to the stamp? or only the EKU of items you have on your database?

The EKU and LKU are the earliest and latest known use for the postmark
The stamp has no bearing on the postmarks period of use except for the fact of what was available in the given time span and for the intended use
With regards to the EKU / LKU it must be remembered that the dates listed are only those I have confirmed and may change as new items come to light. This has happened a lot with the recent batch of updates, with not only pictures being added for those that were only listed as text entries, (which also in most cases provides a date - even if only a starting point), but also a great number of items have resulted in extensions to the dates along with code variations etc ...
Those items that are that are in collections as Earliest known can suddenly become just general usage period and this has happened recently when a collector sent a scan of a page only for the item to be bettered a few days later
With regards to the pictures used, I try for a good scan rather than the earliest known as making the best visual guide available is the most important issue with the dates, codes etc all noted in the text
As a final point regarding the scans - these can all be linked to if anyone wants to post an item for discussion or use them for other reasons. Even if the picture is updated, the old version stays on file, so will remain active regardless of any updates made to the database
100's more to work through .... but at nearly 3am ... will have to wait for another day ...
Hope this covers everything ... Allan

zipper Alas, Zipper, the document does not disclose Mr. Cameron's age. But if you would like to romance what may have happened........................... The Camerons (Daniel was a clothier) were a family of tailors / clothes Merchants in Edinburgh. In 1860 a family of Camerons (Daniel Cameron, wife and 3 sons) emmigrated to New Zealand (what a trip that would have been) The Ships list reads on "assisted passengers" 3 x Tailors Circumstantial evidence, but romantic none the less, the Camerons may well be Kiwi's now www.theshipslist.com/accounts/ladyegidia.shtmlTo illustrate the hardships of the time, the voyage (over 3 months) there were 32 deaths ( 16 children under the age of 3 ) and 7 births.

The most recent addition to the database ... Rothbury Morpeth Nthbd dated 27 November 1972, double cirle with time at top. There is also an earlier single ring type from 1946 with the same wording already listed. What these additions show, even with just a single date recorded to start with, is a snapshot of the types in use at various locations at a given time. As more details are added with regards to dates, codes etc or variations of types, so we have greater details on what to expect from a location at a point in history. This can be useful for confirmation of late use when a hand stamp was re-used for a short period for whatever reason whilst at the same time providing a record for a given location, useful for collectors of certain areas / regions. With the British postmarks now at over 15,100, it is very clear that the number of postmarks required is staggering, but I will continue to add in more material as I get free time I trust that all this detail is useful to some, but regarless, it has been fun to compile and update over the years it has been operational Allan
