Rod: By the way, did you also see the response on the third item, which was on the Bulgaria thread?
I'm happy to help in some small way. No need at all to send anything. I hope we can all help and share information on here.
And if you have others, please just let me know. The more I work with Michel, the better I get at it!

Well, totally not necessary but nonetheless welcome. Just took a quick glance through Scott for Bulgaria postage dues -- they do look at bit thorny. I'll try to supply supplementary material as needed! -- Dave

Was this ever identified? I believe it is Crete Scott #102 from 1909 which is a J4 postage due surcharged, D1 on 20 l red. If I missed someone else's ID, sorry (especially if I am wrong).

1840 to 1940 (Bob)- You got it! It remained unidentified all week. The late bird gets the worm. By the way, I will be away from my scanner for several weeks, so I will not be submitting "unknowns" for awhile.

Uruguay 119, but I have no idea about the ship's name. I suspect, though, that you have a story to tell about it.

I spent a hour or more one day trying find the name of that ship, I searched just about every combination and still stumped. I sure Rod will give use a answer after we exhausted all our resources.

The ship on this stamp lay Unidentified for something like 70 years . Can you name the ship, and from what country of origin? The express steamer "ELBE" (1881–1895)
The "ELBE" was built in 1881 by John Elder & Co. in Glasgow. It made its maiden voyage on April 4, 1881. The "ELBE" was the first express steamer to be operated by Norddeutscher Lloyd and was a popular ship with emigrants on the Bremerhaven–New York route. Voyages were virtually always sold out. Apart from sailing to the USA the "ELBE" also made three voyages to Australia. The "ELBE" could carry a total of 1 117 passengers.
The longitudinal section shows life on board the vessel during the crossing. The metal bunk beds of steerage class and the luggage room on the bottom deck can be clearly seen. Steerage class passengers on the "ELBE" ate their meals in the dormitories.
Shipyard: John Elder & Co., Glasgow Year of construction: 1881 Use: Passenger and freight transport Shipping company: Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen Length: 127.46 meters Breadth: 13.72 meters Gross tonnage: 4 510 Gross register tonnes Passengers: 1st Class: 179, 2nd Class: 142, steerage class: 796 Present whereabouts: Crashed with the British steamer "CRATHIE" on January 30, 1895 and sank. 332 dead

Here's one that's just a bit tricky - I've left the scan small because that's about what it looks like when you come across this turkey in a random mix. I have no idea why the attempts at more-or-less-yellow stamps persisted as long as it did, they're so tough to see correctly (and this one's colour isn't exactly right after scanning, the actual colour isn't quite this dark). And speaking of turkeys, dubstep turkeys. ha ha ha Ryan

You are correct, she was German owned. The shipping company Bremen is German. She was built in Scotland, which I was not aware of until I looked it up.

I am guessing Colombia, only by the "porte" bit, your scan is poor and hides what we may employ to ID I cannot find it in any of my archives, Used by Colombia for use in non authorised airways? Close, but not quite. This stamp is from Colombia, that part is correct - but it is in fact Scott listed, C166 in the airmail section. I deliberately left the scan small because when I first saw the stamp, I couldn't make heads or tails out of the thing until I got out the 10x linen tester. Like Mike said, my first Google hits came up with a Peruvian airline, not a Colombian one. Even after using the magnifier, the name "Colombia" (on the left side in tiny letters) was stlll printed poorly enough and small enough that I could only make out some of the letters. Once upon a time I found a light blue stamp with a heavy socked-on-the-nose cancellation that obscured so much of the design that I couldn't figure out where the heck it was from, even with my magnifier. I eventually had to scan it and then change colours to something with more contrast so I could figure it out. Uruguay! Ryan

Is it the case, because we have already identified all the difficult stamps, that this thread hasn't gotten many new posts lately? Or is there some less obvious reason?

I don't think Rod's stamp in his last post is easy...at least I'm still trying to figure it out. Looks like maybe some type of souvenir from a Swedish stamp show in 1954. I was waiting for jkjblue to post another, but he hasn't in awhile. Maybe he has run out of stamps!

jkjblue mentioned a while back that he was going to be taking a break from this thread for a while. I don't recall him mentioning why.
I've not been around much since then, but it's nice to see this thread keep going.

I was away to Japan for several weeks (Great trip!), and when I got back, life was busy. But I'm up again to present some unknowns. This isn't too difficult, but I remember these stamps as a kid marveling at the differences.

My ? for the week. Hint: What appears simple, is sometimes not so much. If I recall correctly, the value tablet (1/2c) appears on this stamp 72 times, a bit of a record.

Wow, you get a prize for a remarkable observation, even if that isn't what I'm looking for. The 1/2c in the center is a clue....
