To Philatelia
It took me many years to build up a collection. Lucky to be in a good job with decent salary and no kids! I used to buy from the main auction houses in the Nordic countries and a few UK based. One local collector also helped me out and showed me some great stamps. But the main inspiration was my dad, he had a decent Norway collection which I inherited. But to this day I don't know why he collected Norwegian stamps and never will. I just guess he loved the design and how beautiful the stamps are. I still have the Norway number one with 48 Drammen postmark which he wasn't sure was original, but I am. So I added to his collection and then found the fascination of the early issues. Norway is a great country to collect especially the early ones and for me the Oscar issues are simply the best. Not only a lovely stamp to look at, but many lovely postmarks to collect, town, numeral, manuscript, ship and so on. The covers are also fascinating and for me pairs, strips and blocks the main interest. Thanks for your interest.
Regards Graham

Norway 4sk Oscar 1863 with Sande I Jarslb postmark rated a D postmark in the Norgeskatalogen, with A being the most common (A to E), then R (rare) to 5R and the rarest RR. Graham

thegubman - I repeat what was said before - Holy macaroni!!! I am blown away by your most extensive collection of Norway Classics. Very attractive examples of the double foot and broken cliche varieties, even duplicated. And the blocks of four and stripes are simply amazing. Most inspiring, would love to try to copy your achievements, but realize I will never be in a position to get anywhere near that level. Thanks for sharing!!!

In a thread about the Ceres Stamps of Portugal the claim by stanley64 that they were the longest running definitive series was challenged by myself and blaamand suggesting that NORWAY's Post horns held the record. as a further little side note, I offer some examples of plagiarism of the Posthorn design ! Which came first the same basic out line from DENMARK , ICELAND and NORWAY by the same engraver P Batz . All related Scandinavia countries so common design elements are inevitable , But what about CRETE ? What excuse is there for stealing Norway's design completely in 1901? Actually in a larger format ( not shown by my scans) Well maybe since the King of Greece , King George, was a Danish Prince and his brothers were Crown Prince of Denmark and King of Norway , is that the explanation ?

Interesting comparison, and obvious similarities between the Danish, Icelandic and Norwegian. The good Mr Batz had something going 😊
I've also been perplexed by the 'copycat' on Crete. Your explanation is as good as any, I have no idea myself. Quite remarkable anyway.

Not as with Crete, but this 1876/77 stamp looks very much like the Norwegian one:

Very nice Tobben! Really sweet '48' numeral postmark from Drammen.
The colour seems very reddish on my screen. Isn't this supposed to be yellow-orange? On my screen your looks more like red-orange, so you might have got yourself an unusual shade 😊

Now I have redone the scan (same setting) but adjusted the colour (in Lightroom) so it is more like the orginal. I also included the other No 2 I had. As I du not currate my Norway collection often, I did bay a No2 with cancel 48, the same as I had in my collection already!!!!! The new on the left.

Lovely stamps Tobben63. You do get colour variations from a pale yellow (faded) to an orange yellow. Nice to have a matching pair. Cheers Graham

The lats year's I have been putting all the "Posthorn" stamps that came my way into a 16pages stock book. I had now come to the point that two stock book's where filled up. So on Thursday I decided to clean them up and start sorting. I guess there must be more than 1000, but I'm not going to count them. I had to split this i two soaking operations (because of the number of stamps). I put some neutral dish washing liquid in a tray and then dump the stamps in. All where more or less of paper, but there was lot of remains of old hinges, and paper and dirt. After an hour in the water, the water did not look like this. (I did't take any photo of that). Then I rinse trough 8-10 times to the soap and dirt was out. Dried them in two drying books sorted them roughly. I guess I will use the rest of the weekend to fine sort them ant type them using Norgeskatalogen (special catalog from Norway).

Best find so far is a re engraved Nk 29bv1 from 1878. Scott 29 (the main number), Michel 29I, Facit 31bv1. Michel value €120,- The re engraving is the white line between posthorn and crown and between the bell and bell part on right side.

Ok, job is done. And as the statistic nerd I'm I could not resit making a spread sheet to register what I was doing. It has catalog numbers from 7 catalogs at most, and the catalog value from Michel 2017. First of all, her are the stats: I sorted them on small black cards, will put them in albums and duplicate stock book later. If you are a nerd you might like to see how much of what and so on, here you have two images of the spread sheet.

That's a lot of data! I keep it simple... I do have a summary page to keep track of everything, but that is basically it for me. I did used to keep track from where I bought it, not sure what happened there. Notes just has the volume it is in. I need to update that as well, now 3 volumes...

June, 8th, 1944: Cover from Oslo, during German occupation, to Dusseldorf. It carries 2 charity stamps to help Norwegian sailors killed due to war actions.
As I can recall, I paid 1€ for it, a few years ago.

[Posted by former member dennisinnorway]That's a beautiful cover! To fill in some details regarding these stamps... there is a set of 3 "charity" stamps pushed out by the German occupation showing ships sunk by allied forces! They were in fact used as propaganda against King Håkan VII because in addition to the German soldiers killed in the sinking there were also a good amount of Norwegian civilians... 10 + 10 øre:D/S Barøy Was set to assist in the transportation of released German prisoners of war from the Norwegian prisoner of war camp on the island of Skorpa in Kvænangen, Troms. Sunk by torpedo. 15 + 10 øre: D/S Sanct Svithun A complement of passengers consisted of both Norwegian civilians and German military personnel. Although a civilian ship on a regular cargo and passenger route she had German anti-aircraft artillery on board and these guns were always manned by German soldiers. attacked by Canadian fighters based in England. Sunk after fire and damage from air force attack. 20 + 10 D/S Irma Attacked, torpedoed and sunk by Allied submarines Feb. 1944. A fantastic bit of stamp history!

ok, everyone, I need some help from my fellow collectors of Norway. I am looking at an opportunity to purchase Norway 246 in Mint NH condition. 1) It seems that the dealers on EBay and Hipstamp who are selling this have not changed their prices in relation to the lowering of catalogue value in Scott from $80 to $65. One well-known dealer in particular has a Best Offer option, and actually has two copies available. Should I make a Best Offer, and if so, should I take the 19% CV decrease into account when making the offer? It is a beautiful stamp, one that I have been eyeing for a while. Thanks in advance -- BOB

well, here's the latest in the saga. The dealer responded on Friday with scans of the two stamps being offered, and indicated which one they thought was "choice". I made a best offer that evening, but the dealer let it expire. Not sure if they even check their messages over the weekend.

Les hope it is in good condition, $45 is more than enough. That said I hav to check my ovn stamp, I only collect used. My stamp has a corner postmark without a date, not good enough. It is possible to be a fake postmark or a first day of issue OSLO postmark. Value in the Norwegian catalogue (Norgeskatalogen 2016) Is Nok 175 for ** and 250 for used. That catalog is very conservative with it's prising. The Norwegian Skanfil auction has one now and the asking price right now is nok 125,- ($14,5) but it is still 8 days until auction ends. I even find one used with good postmark ending tomorrow witch I made a bid on. But as you got this as a present (as I understand) the price does not mater. Here is my stamp, will sell it if I get the other one.

The stamp finally arrived, it was mailed from Arizona on September 22. We thought it might have gotten lost. It looks even better than the scan. the green is striking and the perfs and centering are almost perfect
