Thanks for your post, René ( renden). I have been meaning to amend my earlier post. In looking at the stamp in question, the right-side one in the cropped image, the R is clearly broken, although I agree not at the top to give the appearance of a K. So, it is perhaps some minor variety of broken R, but probably not the K as mentioned in the Y&T catalogue.

I had the chance to see the actual booklet pane yesterday. It is in perfect condition, apart from the cover missing obviously. My Yvert & Tellier French Colonies catalog only list "booklet pairs" (i.e. a vertical pair with margins) and quotes them at 11 Euros apiece. Just wanted to mention to the membership that Xavier is now the proud owner of the exploded booklet pane shown in my post from 20th July. I traded it to him for a large assortment of French stamps which I have already shipped off to one of my non-TSF trading partners. So, thanks to Xavier for making the deal. I hope that you will be happy with this nice item for your Africa collection.

Started some custom pages for my Algeria stamps, as part of my project: French Colonies/protectorate in Africa. These pages do show stamps that appeared before since P1 of this thread. In its simplest form, these do not represent "all" stamps of early Algérie française (French Algeria) but what I have collected though the years or have received from stamp friends. Though I have completed "classic stamps" of a few french colonies, it is not my goal to complete this one. As for forerunners, this is outside my expertise - I leave that to Jon blaamand René As for the intro page of Algeria, since it is in "french"....I did not scan it More pages to come

An interesting piece I found at the Fête du Timbre, the Maréchal Leclerc memorial issue from 1957 (YT #345), with a nice first-day-of-issue topical cancel on the selvedge, so the stamps themselves are still MNH:

The following pages show the complete set of stamps issued starting in 1924 while Algeria was a French Colony. The stamps shown are mostly Mint Never Hinged.
A few comments about the album pages.
I purchased a set of pages for several of the French African Colonies from STAMPEXTRAS07 (Portugal) on eBay. They come pre-printed and un-punched on heavy glossy stock. You have a choice of either black framed color images of the stamps or a blank frame. Unfortunately, I chose the style with the images printed in color. A drawback I found was the pages looking complete even if there are missing stamps. In retrospect, I would order blank frames in the future.
The handwork involved in mounting the stamps on these pages is huge, at least when I do it my way, cutting Showgard strips and trying my level best to get them straight. After awhile, I started asking myself if the cost of the mounts was exceeding the cost of the stamps (LOL)...

Algerian Postal History The beginning date for postal history in Algeria is unclear, but letters sent by Europeans in Algiers go back to 1690. Oran was controlled by Spain during much of the 18th century, and a postal marking is known from 1749.
Regular postal service came in with the French rule in Algeria, initially as a military post established in 1830 in Algiers, which was then opened to civilians in 1835, but still using military hand-stamps until 1839, after which date-stamps with town names became standard. The service expanded into the interior along with French control, with 295 post offices in operation by 1880.
Beginning in 1924, French stamps were overprinted "ALGÉRIE", eventually to total some 32 types over the next few years. These were superseded in 1926 by the first stamps inscribed for Algeria, the series consisting of four typographed designs showing local scenes, and ultimately consisting of 35 types, ranging from 1 centime to 20 francs. Algeria's first commemorative stamp, a 10-franc value depicting the Bay of Algiers, marked the 100th anniversary of French control. A new definitive series in 1936 again depicted local scenery, using eight engraved designs for 31 values.
In 1942, a photo-lithographed set featured the arms of Algerian cities, and was issued both with and without the engraver's name in the lower left margin. Following the liberation of France, stamps were issued depicting Marianne and the Gallic cock, in designs similar to French stamps; in addition, the old "ALGÉRIE" overprint was revived and applied to French stamps until 1947.
In 1947, a new set of 16 definitives also featured city coats of arms, and remained in use throughout the 1950s, along with a handful of commemoratives. Algeria reverted to the use of French stamps between 1958 and 1962.

Rob ( REL1948), I can only echo René's ( renden) comments, and just say what a beautiful collection of Algeria you have there.... thank you very much for sharing it with us! I would also like to add that it is clear to me that you have not only done a very careful job of mounting them, but you have also put in some significant effort in selecting the stamps in your collection, as the overall condition looks excellent, and the centering seems much better than average, at least to my eye. I am still working on the pre-1930 issues from Algeria myself, and I find that sound examples with VF or better centering are not so easy to find. Very well done on your part, and thanks again for taking the time to post your collection.

A French Foreign Legion postcard for the semi-postal/charity stamp for the Foreign Legion Welfare Fund. Postmarked on the first day of issue, 30th April 1954 at Sidi-Bel-Abbes. The 30th April is celebrated each year by the Foreign Legion as Camerone Day being the anniversary of the Battle of Camarón (Bataille de Camerone). The battle took place in 1863 in Mexico when 63 Legionnaires held off a 3,000 strong Mexican army until their ammunition ran out.
