This 1957 Algerian semi-postal issue was engraved by the French engraver Charles Mazelin. The surtax was used for the Red Cross. I'd never seen this type of fox before. Are those ears for real? So I had to look up Fennec fox. They are the smallest of foxes and inhabit North Africa. The large ears (up to 6") help them dissipate heat. Their thick fur helps insulate them against the cold, desert nights. According the EOL site, they start to get cold (shiver) below 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit). They don't start to pant until temperatures exceed 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit). Well adapted to their Northern Sahara climate.

Love the Vulpes zerda, love the Vulpes vulpes too, but the zerda is just the cutest. Time for Thematic thread Jen!

Time for Thematic thread Jen! That a good idea! But what should we have as the theme? French stamp engravers or Vulpes on stamps?

While at Napex last Sunday and surrounded by all that "serious" philately, I couldn't resist picking up this colorful Algerian set. 1966 Issue, Miniatures by Mohammed Racim. According to Wikipedia, Mohammed Racim was "an Algerian artist who was the founder of the Algerian school of miniature painting that still exists today." 1d - Horseman 1.5d - Woman at her toilette 2d - The pirate Barbarossa in front of the Admiralty. As for Napex, they had a nice set of exhibits. The one I enjoyed the most was "A Message to the Enemy, Espionage and propaganda philately of WWII Europe", by "N. O. Good". Interesting choice for a pseudonym.

Lovely stamps, from an discipline not often seen on boards. I have a patchy collection, always looking for cheapies on ebay. Thanks for posting! India is another country that have "miniatures"

Nice selection from Algeria! I wasn't sure what a "semi-official" airmail stamp was and found this nice refresher article on Linn's that gave a nice overview.

I have realised I have also the Great Western Railway GB Label in my collection as well, shown in Linn's. Saved in my "weblinks" file.

Taking Rod222's tactic of keeping an eye out for cheapies on ebay, I picked up another M. Racim miniatures set semi-cheap on ebay. This 1965 set depicts musicians (.30 and .60) and Algerian princess and antelope. Wouldn't have guessed that they have antelope in Algeria, but they actually have two types. The antelope in the stamp looks like a young scimitar-horned oryx (now extinct in the wild).

(wiki- domesticated by early Egyptians) Interesting, I have them under "Gazelles" Antelopes, cloven hoofed ungulates also known as "Arabian Oryx" thestampforum.boards.net/thread/2053/united-arab-emirates-stampsPS: the nice thing about being a WW collector, one can afford to pass on stamps. I bid on about 20 lots on the weekend, and won 4 amongst them a nice Cinderella lot for 99c + ship. Keep the cheapies going and exercise patience

Just noticed the 1926 30c "Taxe a Percevoir" has no "RF" in the corners
I shall move this to the appropriate spot in 1942 Steiner page.

Could any members translate this Oblong slogan for me please? Skikda Philippeville. Hi, Rodney! Is it correct that the cancel reads: "CHERCHELL DES RUINES SON THEATRE"? If so, then I think the cancel would be for a "sound and light" theatre at the Cherchell (Roman) Ruins , which are depicted on the stamp. [edit: Wrong! It's now apparent after my second cup of coffee. The stamp depicts the Roman villa at Phillipeville (former and present Arabic name: Skikda). Apparently also the place of a significant battle (1955) in the French Algerian war.] Here's a little bit about the "son et lumière" tradition, to which I was first introduced in France (so it makes sense that this would have carried over to a French colony): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_et_lumi%C3%A8re_(show)If you Google Cherchell ruins, several interesting pages show up, including: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeological_Museum_of_Cherchellwww.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1132029and this Flicker photostream: www.flickr.com/photos/ummouhamed/1641318722/in/photostream/Hope that helps! -- Dave

And while I'm thinking of it, what's the name of the online image analysis/manipulation tool that runs an image through a number of filters, etc., to analyze overprints, cancels, etc? I'm drawing a blank on it this morning.
TIA.
