OK - This is a game I have played before and can be a bit of fun: Someone (In this case me) starts by picking a subject/item such as a goat, hypodermic needle, leaning tower, dam, person etc. Your job/task is to find a stamp with that item as the main subject and post a picture - You then get to name the next subject or object to find. If no one finds any stamp with the correct subject within 24 hrs of the post-time; then YOU must post a picture of one, so you must actually know of a stamp with that subject in the first place. You then score a point and then name the next. subject. So the first one shall be... A violin.

I've been out of town for a while. Before I left, I started work on sorting through a collection of French stamps. Lo and behold, buried on a page within is a violin stamp ... 1965, "The Red Violin" by Raoul Dufy, Scott #1117. Ryan

I'll keep the next stamp hunt on a musical topic. Serpent! Not a snake, but a musical instrument. Believe it or don't, Roy Wood (The Move / Electric Light Orchestra / Wizzard / etc) shows one in one of the pictures on this video ...
Off you go to find a musical serpent on a stamp.

I'll play -- DDR 25pf multicolored, perf. 14 French "serpent" 17th-18th centuries (Scott 2032; Aug. 21, 1979). Let's see one showing a block and tackle.

Slovenia, one of a few differing designs showing a man breaking free of his chain. This one is Scott 3L2 from 1919 (found in the catalogue under the precursor issues of Yugoslavia). Up next - a Canadian stamp on a non-Canadian stamp. Ryan

Sunflowers - driving through the middle of America, I remember seeing more sunflower fields in Nebraska, but here's a stamp celebrating Kansas. Scott 1183, 1961. And speaking of Scott, check out the funky colours on the stamp scan as it looked in the 2005 electronic catalogue (the second one) - in my 2009 hardcopy, it looks correct, no longer such odd colours. Up next, a drag racing car! Ryan

How 'bout Aruba 263 (in Scott) from 2005: [I'm getting a message saying that the forum is beyond its space allotment, so no uploading...] I won't expect you to take my word for it that Aruba 263 depicts drag racing, so I guess we'll wait... ETA: Doh! I can post a link, in this case to a bidstart auction for the whole set (of 3): stampwants-stamps.bidstart.com/Aruba-261-3-mint-set-drag-racing-issued-2005-/42626529/a.htmlStill, a picture is worth a thousand words...someone else will have to answer this one.

Hi cjd, to circumvent advertising, we now use remote image storage, photobucket etc. Cheers.
If you do employ remote image storage, one has to consider leaving the image in the created file FOREVER, otherwise the forum is left with a blank icon, if you delete or move an image withing the storage location.
PS: You have to nominate the next target stamp.

If it's to be, it's up to me... For the next stamp...find one with "a sea-eagle actually having caught a fish!"

For the next stamp...find one with "a sea-eagle actually having caught a fish!" Hmmm - I immediately thought of an osprey, which is also known as a fish eagle. But Wikipedia specifically says that the osprey is not a sea-eagle. Drat & blast. Ospreys are popular birds here - an older issue of the Canadian $10 bill had an osprey on the back, and here in Calgary we have a number of platforms built for osprey nests to try to keep them from causing problems with putting their nests in places that don't work so well for humans (or, ultimately, the birds themselves). Every summer we get an osprey cam to have a look at a nest at the Calgary Zoo. The chicks are handsome now, not like when they're hatchlings. Ryan

Ospreys? Perhaps. Find a gondola not likely to be seen on water or in the air.

I was hoping to find a stamp with an open railroad freight car but had to settle for this cabin suspended on a lift (Switzerland Scott 337). Let's go back to the bird theme -- anyone have a brown pelican?

Well, what do we think about this US parcel post stamp? The cars immediately ahead of the full-height enclosed car have short sides, and the stamp does have to do with steel manufacturing, so I would guess that these short-sided cars are gondola cars. But I'm no expert at all, that's for sure. Ryan

Yep, those look like down-to-earth gondolas. Here are two more. So, let's go on with the brown pelican suggested by tomiseksj.

A brown pelican it is. As a young collector, I was impressed by this series of US stamps - extra large sized, engraved and colourful. I usually spend the American spring break in South Carolina and I enjoy watching the pelicans diving for their supper, while the cormorants roar around underneath the water (and while I stay on the beach so the jellyfish don't wrap themselves around my ankles). The cormorants don't worry about sitting in the same water as the alligators, but the pelicans stay away! Speed is a virtue at times. Here's a photo from a cloudy spring day along the South Carolina barrier islands - one brown pelican, one cormorant, one dolphin. Up next - back to a transportation theme, how about a microcar? Ryan

With respect to the sea-eagle question, I guess osprey would have been a more accurate description, altough ospreys are sometime referred to as fish-eagles. Anyway, the stamp I was thinking of was a very nice engraving:

4-leaf clover - 3 of them, in fact. And they have nothing to do with luck on this stamp from Sweden, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the United Nations (1970). According to the Scott catalogue, the clovers symbolize efforts for equality and brotherhood. Here's the next hunt. This lovely young lady was eventually awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Find her on a stamp! Ryan
