Thanks for sharing, zipper. Many of those scenes bring back childhood memories, especially the exhibit in the Museum of Science and Industry.

Wasn't it wonderful? I loved Yesterday. Not much left of it. Much smaller now, no nickelodeon.

In the Postcard "Maxwell Street" Chicago, about 2 o'clock, are my eyes deceiving me? It looks like a shop called "Swift Stamps"

It looks like a shop called "Swift Stamps" I just had a half hour trip on Maxwell street, I think you have eyes like a eagle it does look like Swift stamps. Question for Steve, Zipper and others from the windy city. Was there ever a Swift Stamp Store? Great postcards, found myself wondering around old Chicago for a good hour. Postcards complement stamps, always nice to see the lay of the land in a bygone age.

I do remember seeing a submarine outside a museum as I drove by on what I assume was Riverside Drive?? Always wanted to go back to check it out.We have what is maybe the only WWII destroyer escort left in Albany. My wife's father a naval vet did tour and some upkeep duties until he was physically unable.Looking at the size of the ship must have been very uncomfortable on ocean duties, not at all a large vessel.

The captured German submarine U-505, on display at the Museum of Science and Industry (which is adjacent to Lake Shore Drive) was another of my childhood favorites. I've spent about as much time as Jack did and have been unable to find anything related to stamps on Maxwell Street in the 1940s/early 1950s. For anyone interested, this clip from the documentary film Cheat you Fair, shows the history of Maxwell Street.

Steve, thank you so much for the video! I used to shop there every Sunday morning when I had an antique store. It's great to be able to go back again! I haven't been to the new market since they moved it.
Jack, I don't know anything about Swift's stamps.

Frog, the sub was on 57th street beach until they moved it into the Museum. We kids played on it until someone would catch us and make us scatter.

Zipper let me add to your Chicago display. Here's one sent in 1908 with a nice Kinzie Stn. cancel. But the real fun is on the front...
Looks like Jim and Clara are enjoying their visit to the big city!

Good one, James. That looks as though it was taken at an amusement park, probably Riverview or the White City. Had one of myself and some friends taken back in the 1960's.

Today's mail. This is how downtown looked when I hung there. Probably 1961, "Mondo Cane" is showing, and Paul Newman possibly in "Hud"

I say late October 1962, kind of has a fall look to it. Some men are wearing jackets and I think I can see some foliage turning colour.
Ian Flemings James Bond is being shown which was released in early October.

Check out the cool car and the gorgeous colors. The building on the left, with the clock jutting out, was Marshall Fields. They had a great stamp department. Your postcard lives here, too......... www.pdxhistory.com/html/marshall_fields.html

Thanks for the link. Marshall Fields was THE store in Chicago. I have many happy memories of shopping and dining in the Walnut Room.

Zipper, I am not a postcard collector but seeing these cards has given me the urge. Real beauties. That last one had me staring lovingly at the computer screen for at least 10 minutes. My daughter was ready to call the doctor !!

Thanks for the link.
So many beautiful buildings here died to make way for developers' profits. The City Hall building in the postcard is gone, too.
