Are you a fan? He played at the Earl of Old Town. Did you see him there? I've been a fan for a very long time. Back in 1973 (based on the songs in the set list that I remember), he toured with John Prine and KINK-FM in Portland broadcast the concert given there. My parents taped it and those tapes were played repeatedly on road trips. I did see him in Calgary twice before he died - the second time he was already pretty sick and no longer had any hair. Ryan Thanks! The only song of his that I've heard lately is Go Cubs Go. (I'm walking distance to Wrigley Field. Wish I could care about the Cubs.) The Earl of Old Town was at 1615 N. Wells St. I lived at 1641 N. North Park, one block west. Used to see him a lot. Nice guy.

The only song of his that I've heard lately is Go Cubs Go. (I'm walking distance to Wrigley Field. Wish I could care about the Cubs.) For some unknown reason, my cable TV package includes WGN so I get to see lots of Cubs & White Sox games. So, every time the Cubs win, I hear Go Cubs Go at the end of the game. They aren't winning as much this year, though! I used to get the Big Ten Network too so I could also see Northwestern playing baseball. But that channel went away a few months ago. Oh well, they raised my monthly cable bill to compensate. ha ha Ryan

Our beloved Marshall Fields. Now a Macy's. Was the finest store in the city and had a cool stamp department. I spent some happy time this morning, Zipper, going through your old Chicago postcard posts--beautiful stuff, thank you!! When I lived in the area in 1984-1985, I worked in the Loop at 209 W. Jackson St., and I remember walking over to Field's and Carson's, mostly to look at nice clothing that I couldn't really afford! I am guessing that the Stamp Dept. was gone by then. Anyway, it really brought back some great memories for me, looking through the vintage postcards. What a town!

Glad I could bring you joy.
Where did you live when you were here?
In '84, I was on Roscoe (3400 north) between Lake Shore Drive and Broadway. Now I'm back in Lincoln Park. (Diversey & Sheridan Road)

Glad I could bring you joy. Where did you live when you were here? In '84, I was on Roscoe (3400 north) between Lake Shore Drive and Broadway. Now I'm back in Lincoln Park. (Diversey & Sheridan Road) You have, indeed, brought me joy, Zipper! Back in '84-'85, I lived in Evanston on Central Ave., an easy walk from the EL, which was my link to everything, as I did not own a car for most of my time there. I ended up in Evanston because my roommate, who was an old college friend, chose it since he was doing his MBA at Northwestern at the time. We lived right across the street from Dyche Stadium--on Saturdays when the team had a game, it sounded like the band was marching right through our living room! I do remember that there was a great hot dog place called Mustard's Last Stand which was also nearby. But my favorite thing was shopping at the second-hand vintage clothing stores on the North side, and I used to go to watch classic movie double-features at the Music Box Theatre. I have been an old film buff for a long time.... I loved my time in Chicago, Zipper; thanks for bringing it back for me!

I love the Music Box! They show a lot of Bergman.
Fellini is my favorite director and La Strada my favorite film. LOVE the neorealists.

I recently received the latest ebay purchase for my hometown collection and was pleased to note that zipper hadn't yet posted an example of it in this thread. The card features the YMCA Building and it was postmarked in Cicero on September 4, 1911.

Do you have an address for the Y? There were many. The next time I'm downtown, I can check what's now there.

The address on the card is 156 LaSalle but that predates the street's division into North and South. I believe the current address is 19 South LaSalle and one of the major tenants is the State Bank of India. It appears that the upper portions of the building have been modified from the original.

An anniversary gift from Zipper. Real photo postcard taken from atop of the Medinah Athletic Club, facing Michigan Blvd, Chicago, IL. (42 floors) This photo has a cool industrial-gotham vibe, where the rest of the world doesn't really exist. I like it! Ain't love grand?! Chicagology- Medinah Athletic Club

I know I've not been logging in a lot lately, but was looking around and saw the Steve Goodman posts above. I'm a huge John Pine fan. I'm still reeling from his loss (AND Peter Green! Make it stop!!!!). Here's a wonderful video of Prine and Goodman performing Souvenirs live. Wonderful stuff. Extra Goodman video tacked on as well.

Our Archbishop's house on prime Gold Coast land. The conservatory is gone, but the rest is still there. I once counted 12 or 13 chimneys on it.

Creation statue from Riverview amusement park. Loved that place. Spent many days there every summer. Have many souvenirs, including tickets from many of the rides such as the BOBS roller coaster (at that time the largest).

Wow! You were close. You could have walked there! Had I been that close I would have been there nearly every day. I had to come all the way from 51st and California.

I don't recall walking, but I would bet we did. We used to walk everywhere and a mile or two would have been considered a short stroll by my mother.

Normally, I don't like B@W postcards, but for this one I'll make an exception. This is a photo of the actual bed on which Lincoln died. I've never gone to the Chicago Historical Society (now called the Chicago History Museum) without stopping to see it. There is an eerie feeling emanating from that room.
