... Anything not already labeled must be gone through more closely.Any members traveling by would be a welcome help. I wish I were travelling by, Frog, as I would love to help you sort through the Large Queens. Maybe one of these days! Congratulations on your latest discovery!

The thing about the 1/2 cent is the size of the stamp leaves the watermark less well centered than the rest of the issue. This example shows about 3/4 of the "M" at the top of stamp.I'm quite sure seller did not see it there. It is a MNG example which is part of the reason watermark stood out so well even with page remnants stuck there.

frog, that stamp is a Rare stamp. I have seen very few copies for sale at auction. The Unitrade catalog value for Very Good Unused (No Gum) condition is $22,000 Canadian. A very nice find. Any copy I have seen is not in good condition and sells in the $5000+ range at auction.

jimjung I wish I remembered where it came from. When time is short as it is now, many times I neglect checking or mounting and just tuck stamps in glassines and stick them in the page protector where they belong. The problem as you see is no record where what came from.Shame really ,I would love to pick from sellers stock again.

Here's one to ponder.Below straight out of Unitrade is the Watermarks found on Large Queens. Now examine this stamp.Where does this one fit?

I agree. It is MIL. The watermark was not consistent in its' position on the sheet and was sometimes inverted.

I invite anyone with time on their hands to drop by and help with these large queens. There are SOOOO many that really need further research that I may never get to them.I took a look at the Weeda auction that closed yesterday and the true market value of these is quite shocking to a simple collector like myself. What is the easiest way to measure paper thickness ? As Jimjung mentioned earlier watermarks should be checked three ways (1) hold stamp up to light tilting it a couple different ways. (2) submerge in watermark fluid in black dish. (3) submerge stamp in water in a black dish. Not all watermarks are visible in watermark fluid the importance of this cannot be stressed enough. I did a head count yesterday, I currently have 258 large queens with more on the way.OCD is a terrible thing.

That 6c Watermarked LQ is a tough one to get. It sells for $200-300 at auction even if slightly damaged. My LQ album was too full and I had to separate the collection into two albums. It's the covers that take up all the space. This 2c LQ has a small plate scratch on the neck and I've plated it at Position 96 using a 2nd copy that shows the Imprint in the bottom margin. Here is the 2nd copy with the plate scratch and imprint Here is most of the imprint I've pieced together - positions 94 - 96. The copy at position 96 below does not have the plate scratch in the neck. It's very light so it would have worn off from plate wear if it wasn't corrected.

If you look close at posted scans you'll notice I have the complete set in mint (hinged of course). If you add the CV of the various watermarked and varieties the resulting figure is really quite staggering. Then of course this is just a fledgling collection.I'm hoping to move on from these in the near future.Much more actual work is needed to properly catalog them.

What Large Queen collection could be complete without this one? Frog, I normally try to avoid making too many what I would call "ooh-and-aah" posts, but wow, you called this one! That is one beautiful piece of material, and I agree absolutely that no LQ collection would be complete without it. That is one seriously cool item, and I never even had any idea it existed until now. Great acquisition!

A couple of nice multiples of the 15c Large Queens. Strip of three showing the Imprint in the lower margin and the Balloon Flaw (Unitrade 30vi) in the right stamp. The Balloon Flaw is just a dot of color under the first E in FIFTEEN. Block of Four showing the Full Printers Imprint. Also has a strong Kiss Print that looks like the design is doubled to the left of the stamp design.

These nice Large Queen items have been put up for sale in the next Eastern Public Auction on June 8-9, 2018 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you have the desire to get some Extremely nice items for your collection, please take a look when the Sales Catalog is published. Pence, First Cents and Large Queen items will be included in the sale. 15c with Pirie Script Watermark. Printed only in 1876-77, this copy has a dated postmark of AP 17 76 from HALIFAX. The watermark can be seen on the back of the stamp at the top. It normally is upside down and in reverse when looking at the stamp. The complete watermark is shown below with the portion from my stamp marked with a rectangle at the right.

Wow, I just read through this entire thread. Wow! So much to learn from you guys - and so many nice varieties I will never see in my albums. Mouth-watering!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, jimjung , firstfrog2013 , watermark , tomiseksj , Ryan . Now, I am about to create my custom DIY pages for the LQ's. Have any of you made detailed pages for these? I am unsure how to go about them. Considering to start my custom page with a space for each of the basic set, and then have a section for each value with the varieties, papers, shades etc as listed in Unitrade. Alternatively one can make a section for each paper type, or for early printings, late printings and so on. Then at the end a free quadrille page for any other variety, curiosity, re-entry etc. But there might be better ideas. How do you guys do it? The shades are also buggling me, as it seems to me there are so many shades, much more than listed in Unitrade. Any ideas, images of your pages or other inspiration for how to make pages for the LQ's will be most welcome. Thanks, Jon

blaamand: I do have similar to what you've stated. Pages at the beginning that have spaces for the Large Queen sets, one page for Mint, one for VF Used and one for watermarked. Eventually, I should add a page that has the set for each Paper Type such as Thin, Bothwell, Thick White, etc. After that I have pages for each denomination, marking each variety with extra blank spaces for future purchases.

blaamandJon, good questions and I hope the "experts" get into the discussion. If H.E. & H.W Duckworth took their knowledge and experience to write a 468 page "book" (or reference) on the Large Queens of Canada it means it is not an easy subject. Unitrade Canada Specialized does touch various aspects in their catalog but not with all of the content of this book. Just read the sub-Chapter (Chapter III, A-) on "paper" to wonder how to recognize them all Hope you manage an "easy" way to do your pages - Enjoy the journey René

Thanks for your kind response jimjung, nice to know how the seasoned do this Personally I do not have that many LQ's at all yet, and as a WW collector I try to restrict the number of pages required in order to avoid needing a new house! Hence I will compress my set-up compared to yours (not having one page for each of the groups) - but I like how you organize it and might do something similar. Except, I do not need seperate spaces for mint copies - way out of my scope and budget Would love to see your tough! Thanks renden! That's what I am trying to do - don't have time or patience to dive into Ducksworth. So aiming for somewhat detailed pages, more advanced than 'basics' but not diving into the abyss either

Understand Jon blaamand and agree with you !! When I started doing my custom Canada Pages, this is an example of my 1st LQ page.....not many stamps a you notice and at the time I inserted pics. I do have a very nice #21, MNH-VF (perf 12) I piked up somewhere. I left some spots for #21C which I would like to get and the #21a...easy to re-arrange the number of spots as all pages are in my page maker ! Also put down a possible 22ii with the rest (Bothwell paper) - Does meet some criteria found in Duckworth as vertical ribbing, vertical diamond pattern and a taller design than the #22 and somewhat narrower. No watermark detected which is a bummer.....the watermarked is 22a (Unitrade) so 22ii would not have the watermark. Thanks to jimjung for his participation.....he is a busy guy - I hope he critics my 1st page René
