The first U.S. stamp to include a flag as one of the main design features was the 30c ultramarine & carmine "shield, eagle and flags" stamp from the 1869 pictorial issue (Scott 121), the first series of stamps to feature something other than the head or bust of a famous American leader. The stamps were produced by the National Bank Note Company and issued with a grill measuring 9.5x9mm (12 by 11 to 11.5 points).

FinlandThe Finnish flag, a blue Nordic cross on a field of white, is prominently featured on this 4.50 markka + 1 markka, perf. 14, deep ultramarine semi-postal issued May 2, 1945 (Scott B68). The surtax aided the Finnish Red Cross.

Scott 4785d is a double-sided booklet pane of 20 tagged, serpentine die cut 11.5x10.75 on 2 or 3 sides stamps printed by the Banknote Corporation of America for Sennett Security Products. There are 12 stamps on one side (3 each of 4782-4785) and eight stamps (2 each of 4782-4785) plus a label that serves as a booklet cover on the other. The stamps have a microprinted "USPS" near the top of the flagpole. When issued on May 17, 2013 the stamps were sold for 46 cents each. Scott 4782 shows the flag in Spring, 4783 in Summer, 4784 in Autumn and 4785 in Winter.

FRANCE, Vichy Government Issue, October 12th, 1942. One of the more classy Flag issues. Printed in sheets of 20 so as to look like the French Tricolore. The central gutter has 'Albino' impressions of the stamp making it a 'kind of' triptych !! The Blue and red versions were also issued in a de-luxe Miniature sheet by the Government Printers in Paris. Semi-Postal issue to raise funds for the Waffen SS. One of my favourite Flag issues.

Here is our flag, in 1967, the 100th Anniversary of Confederation, in untagged & Winnipeg tag versions. I'll have to re-mount these, as I was not intending to buy any other early stamps. I have the 50th & 60th Anniversaries (1917 & 1927) plus the Historical issue, and then this 1967 issue. I have since added the Quebec Tercentenary, the Admirals & subsequent series etc...

CEYLON, 4th February 1949. The Flag of Ceylon, one of a set of 4 stamps issued to commemorate the 1st Year of Independence in February 1949. The Flag, the design of which derives from the Sinhalese Kingdom of Kandy, was in use up to 1951 when changes were made to represent the minority Muslim and Tamil peoples. In 1972 when Ceylon became known as Sri Lanka the flag was changed again with the addition of leaves to represent the Buddhist community.

Love those vivid colors that accompany flag stamps. The Columbus stamp has an emotional appeal as well.

Is there a way to tell a grill just by looking at it or do you have to use the lighter fluid method the guy in n the upper picture used? I don't think I have any with grills but then again I don't think I'd know if I did see one

Not all stamps were issued with grills (an experiment intended to prevent reuse) and those that were can often be seen and measured with the naked eye. The use of watermark fluid or lighter fluid was an effort to emphasize a very feint grill. Siegel Auctions provides some good information on the 1867-68 grilled issues.

Flags on Canadian Stamps The Quebec Tercentenary issue of 1908 has a few flags in the distance then at the top of this war issue from 1942 and if you look closely enough, the Canadian flag is flying high on the Peace Tower of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

Very nice stamps brightonpete ! But here lies a dilemma. How does a Topical (Thematic) collector decide what to include and what not to ? as nice as your stamps are from the very nice post, I have not included 3 of the items in my collection because of the size. How do others decide what to include in their topical collections ? Anyway, whilst we are here on Flags (my favourite topic), here's another ! Great Britain MS2206a (Gibbons) with extra selvedge which includes wartime words from Winston Chiurchill. Issued in the 'Unseen and Unheard' Prestige Booklet from 2001. You will notice the pane (and sheet) include in the left selvedge the stitch holes from the booklet. Yes, there is a difference in price with and without !!! The joys of Stamp Collecting. Londonbus1

ISRAEL 1949. 1st Independence Anniversary. Designed by Franz Krausz. In Offset Lithography, Perf 11½. Nearly all Israel Stamps have been issued with Tabs below the bottom row of stamps of the sheet. A few have been issued with side Tabs, mostly early types, and therefore it is possible (some may say necessary!) to collect with both Left and Right Tabs . (Yes, that's me, the 'necessary' one) So this issue celebrates the first year of Israel as an Independent State. Below the left and Right tabbed examples is one without Tab....and without something else too ! Can you spot it ? Just for reference, you will notice that below the decorative 'Tab' there is selvedge. Although always plain, the selvedge forms part of the Tab (as a whole) and without this plain uninteresting bit of paper, the stamp should be called with 'part tab' or 'short tab'. It is mostly the earlier, often more costly stamps where this occurs and it can often be seen by sellers and top auction houses that an Israel Stamp is 'with Tab' when it isn't. The price should always reflect this. An Israel Stamp with Tab but without the selvedge should be offered at the same price as an Israel stamp without Tab. Londonbus1

I could show Flag items until this time next year but I won't bore you again with too many. So, just one more for tonight. Miniature sheet and stamps from the Dominican Republic. Issued in 1962 , the first anniversary of the death (assassination) of former President (and dictator) Trujillo. Both the sheet and the stamps show the State Flag although the central National Arms is barely recognizable. The Red symbolizes the Freedom Fighters' suffering; the Blue for Liberty and the White Cross for the People's Sacrifices. The National Flag, without the central arms, was adopted in 1844 upon Independence.

I figured I might as well, but it can be easily deleted...
