Very nice stamps brightonpete ! But here lies a dilemma. How does a Topical (Thematic) collector decide what to include and what not to ? as nice as your stamps are from the very nice post, I have not included 3 of the items in my collection because of the size. How do others decide what to include in their topical collections ? I know! I thought it over, and decided that they are flags, just not the main focus of the stamp. I figured I might as well, but it can be easily deleted... No, absolutely not !! They are still Flags !

CANADA flag cancel on Scott # 85 note: related to flag cancels, there are two other types of cancel. These are the wavy line cancel (originally classified as a flag by McCready) and the machine cancel. Flag cancellations have been the subject of a considerable body of literature.(ref: The evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and the Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp, by WINMILL.) The one shown on CANADA Sc 85 is the Map Stamp Flag cancel that would be properly collected on cover. One can read CANADA in the cancel which is not in its entirety.

Would you be willing to re-post the image on the Jubilee thread, too? Please find it here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/4388/jubilee-issueYou will also see one of my earliest posts on that thread which shows my unused Jubilee set. I like it so much that I have decided to try for a used set, too.

I do have some Flag Cancels but cannot put my finger on them. But they will be posted. In the meantime, more Flag stamps, this time in the form of South Korea Souvenir Sheets from the friendship type series. A very nice series it is too.

Two cousins to my first stamp I introduced in thestampforum.boards.net/post/61627/thread , issued by Egypt in 1977 (YT#1020-21). I still remember my elation when I discovered them in a selection of Egyptian stamps. Wasn't going to let them pass by, for sure!

Antigua, 1967. Issue commemorating Associated Statehood. Set of 4, SG#199-202 Designed by local Artist and Senior Antigua Auditor WD Cribbs and printed by Harrison & Sons. The 4c value shows the State Flag and Maps of both Antigua and neighbouring Barbuda which used the stamps of their neighbour between 1925 and 1968. Barbuda was tragically made uninhabitable in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma destroyed almost every building. THE FLAG.The State Flag of Antigua & Barbuda was born out of a competition held in 1967 and remained as the Islands Flag after Independence from Great Britain in 1981. The winning design was by well-known local Artist and Sculptor Sir Reginald Samuel. The two outer red triangles represent the vigour and dynamism of the people. The Golden Sun represents the dawning of a new era rising over the three stripes......... Black represents the soil and the populations African heritage; Blue for Hope and White for Peace. The 'V' shape formed by the placement of the stripes and triangles is for 'Victory'. The design as a whole is also said to represent the attractions of the Islands and the West Indies as a whole, Sun, Sea and Sand. Who could argue with that. Let us hope for better times for the people of Barbuda.

From my latest cataloguing effort, the block issued by Canada to honor Nelson Mandela, with the new South African flag (which he had a hand in re-designing) in the background.

An issue from Gambia at independence in 1965, YT#199, back when they weren't using stamp collectors as cash cows! Actually I think the policy of several of these small countries to issue litterally 100s of blocks and sheet issues on topical themes of little to no actual relevance to the country's own cultural and historical context is disgraceful.
