gbcc I am assuming that the Chiswick Savage Club is now Chiswick Football Club or some such name. hdm1950 I'm not too sure. Before I posted the image up I did a quick bit of research but could not find a direct match for a sporting club that started in 1909. The Hockey club started in 1903 , the image on the postmark doesn't really go with a football club. I have seen an illustrated cover for this postmark with what looks like an native American Indian with a large head dress. Geoff

Initially, I thought this was a wind up/joke/spoof story - but seems not - obviously my education is lacking, and I knew nothing of this skirmish. The C17 and C18 centuries were rife with naval conflicts in the waters around the U.K., conflicts with the Dutch and French etc., and as Nelson discovered, even further afield. Small extract and much thanks to Wiki for the following.......... ""The naval Battle of Solebay took place on 28 May Old Style, 7 June New Style 1672 and was the first naval battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The battle began as an attempted raid on Solebay port where an English fleet was anchored and largely unprepared for battle. They were then surprised by a Dutch fleet.""

29th May (1909) SG 99, I think, showing King Leopold - unfortunately, not a very clean example. The 10c. value in rose-red - this one from 1909, missing its tablet - the bottom tear off portion - and cancelled this day in Anvers (Antwerp) - a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. I think GARE means station--so, ANTWERP CENTRAL STATION.

paul1I had noticed that you had stopped posting for a while.I always assumed that you had been kidnapped by the ladies at your charity shop and they had been having their wicked ways with you. Good to see they have had enough of you and you are back posting. Anglobob.........no charity shops where I live....

hello anglobob - the real reason is far more mundane, though tbh I really would love to be kidnapped by ladies at one of the many charity shops I frequent - sadly it won't happen! In all honesty the reason is that possibly like others I'm my own worst enemy - I have too many interests - and occasionally veer off onto bookbinding, entomology, carpentry etc. But - I love your sense of fantasy - though sorry to hear your location is devoid of charity shops, over the years I have found some gems.

some good stamps of the ss 'NORMANDIE' franoise - thanks for posting. No idea if it was on her maiden voyage, but she won the Blue Riband - presumably on the transatlantic run, though the U.K. lifted it from France in 1936 with the Queen Mary, only to lose it back to the Normandie in 1937.

Canada special cover - Floralies 1980
The holding of the Floralies internationales de 1980 in Québec is the outcome of a long international negociating process and accreditation was secured on March 20, 1978, in Zurich, Switzerland. This cover is franked by 4 definitive stamps issued by Canada Post between 1979-1982. A total of 8 stamps were issued and tagged GT-2, printed by the British American Bank Note Company

May 31, 1960. At the height of the Cold War, a philatelic souvenir. To a FDC with the new SEATO stamp, someone has added a copy of the '10th Year Anniversary of NATO' stamp from the previous year. Cover: Washington DC -- FDC May 31, 1960 - SEATO: South-East Asia Treaty Organization Australia, New Zealand, France, UK, USA, Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan Art Craft Cachet Stamps: USA: SEATO (SEATO conference being held in Washington May 31-June 3. 1960) 4c Blue Sc. 1151 USA: NATO (10th Anniversary) April 1, 1959 4c Blue Sc. 1127 SEATO was established in 1954. However, unlike NATO, it was not to last. Pakistan withdrew in 1973, France withdrews its financial support in 1975. The organization disolved on June 30, 1977. [Fun fact: Another Cold War organization -- METO, the Middle East Treaty Organization (AKA CENTO -- the Central Treaty Organization) with the UK, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Turkey was formed in 1955 and was dissolved in 1979. In 1961, Turkey issued a CENTO stamp]

Wore my index finger, down to the second knuckle, searching for "The Chiswick Savages" Nothing, they are an enigma! rod222 I have subsequently purchased the illustrated cover as below one to add to the collection and secondly to see if it helps in identifying the Organisation. Sadly no contents to cover but as per the cover front ' Chiswick Savage Club' Can find no specific ref online to this named club however there was a gentleman's club called the Savage Club established in London in 1857 and remained one of the leading bohemian gentleman’s clubs in London. (This club was based in Whitehall Place SW1 but exists no more) Online research = Clubs elsewhere have borrowed both the name and the style, which continues to be the “pursuit of happiness” — a quest made infinitely more agreeable by the fellowship of Members who are known to each other by the sobriquet “Brother Savage” Therefore was this one of those off shoot gentleman clubs in Chiswick? Canada ... June 1, 1976 Cover: The One Hundred Year Anniversary of the Royal Military College of Canada FDC - Fancy Cancel, not posted Stamps: Royal Military College Centenary Colour Parade and Memorial Arch 8c Wing Parade and MacKenzie Building 8c Tagged GT2 Unitrade 692 and 693 I see RMC almost everyday. The ferry from Wolfe Island passes it as we enter Kingston's inner harbour. There have been 85 annual hockey games between the RMC Paladins and the West Point (Amry) Black Knights. Sadly (for Canada) West Point won this year's game with a score of 6-1 in January.
