A stampless folded letter with 28mm red "BOSTON,Ms" ("s" high) CDS (in use from 1800-05) and manuscript "8" indicating the not over 40 mile zone rate for single letters. Letter content notes the year as 1804. The Haverhill, Massachusetts postmark, applied in 1896, cancelled the 2c carmine, type III, perf. 12 Washington (Scott 267; May 1895). Postmarked Lyme Regis, England in 1936. The Blue Boar post card carries two 1/2p dark green, perf. 14.5x14 re-engraved versions of the 1912-13 KGV issue (Scott 210).

July 29Windowed envelope with Thomas Goggan & Brother corner card and 2c rose carmine, perf. 11x10.5 National Defense issue stamp (Scott 900; Oct. 16, 1940) postmarked Houston, Texas in 1941. This cover certainly calls into question the above assertion that the firm went out of business prior to the Great Depression era. Additional information, available at the Texas State Historical Association website, indicates that Goggan's music publishing stopped in Galveston in 1930 but some business operations in retail branches continued into the mid-twentieth century.

Inflation-period cover from Moscow to Milano, Italy (backstamped 11/8/1922). Registered with just a handwritten notation! Franked with 6x10R Arms + 3x20k Arms. At this point in time the registered letter rate is 90R and the kopeck Imperial values had been revalued 100x to rubles, BUT the 20k stamps had not been revalued to rubles. Accordingly, only the 10R stamps are cancelled on cover. Although the amount paid is only 60R, there does not appear to exist any postage-due notation!

It is curious that the postal clerk, spent considerable energy cancelling the 10R Arms very nicely, each one afforded a strike of the hammer, yet missed the 3 x 20k arms completely.

Rod, I agree with your observation. It looked so peculiar that I initially thought the 20k stamps might have been added to the cover at a later point to substitute for some missing stamps (remember the correct rate is 90 rubles and there are only six 10R stamps). However, I can see no traces of cancellations either in the area where the 20k stamps are located or on the backside of the cover. So it is possible that the postal clerk enforced the regulation that did not allow the use of 20k stamps as ruble values by NOT cancelling them, but no postage-due was raised subsequently. For a complete picture, here is the backside of the cover:

July 31Double circle Boston, Massachusetts postmark on a 2c Blackjack (Scott 73) and corner card from Edwin H. Sampson's Paper & Twine Warehouse. This "last day of old air mail rate" cover was postmarked in Springfield, Illinois in 1928. The 10c domestic air mail rate for 1/2 ounce, all routes, paid here with an orange, perf. 11 Monroe (Scott 562; Jan. 15, 1923), was being replaced on August 1st by a 5c, all routes, 1st ounce rate that would remain in effect until July 5, 1932.

I was reading a debate the other day, where for reasons not given, a stamp was removed from an important cover (perhaps for cover husbandry) and then re applied to the cover via a hinge, I think I recall the collector suggested this was the accepted regime.

tomiseksjSteve, is that biplane cachet faded? or intended? I have a few cachets similar, and I came to the conclusion they were designed/printed like that.

Hi Vasia, Printed on the back, hence privately produced Stationery? Hi, Rod, during the late 1920's - early 1930's the Soviet postal authorities produced many stationery envelopes (denominated or not) bearing a large variety of printed slogans. These slogans had to do with the ongoing industrialization drive, the collectivization in the countryside, various aspects of education, international solidarity, etc. These are a fascinating field of study, usually referred to as "Advertizing and Agitation". The denominated ones have been catalogued - a total of 289 different envelopes recorded in the period 1929-1935. The slogans on my un-denominated envelope above have something to do with directions for postal sendings, but this will have to wait for a better translation.
