August 3This post card was sent from Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1907. The 1c green perf. 12 stamp featuring Captain John Smith (Scott 328) was released on April 26, 1907 as part of the Jamestown Exposition issue. The 3c deep violet, perf. 11 stamp on this first day cover postmarked Longmire, Washington in 1934 (Scott 742) features that state's Mount Rainier and Mirror Lake.

Cover from Tetyukhe Pier, Vladivostok okrug to Muenchen, Germany. Franked correctly at 14k with "Large Heads" and 8k/7k soldier overprint. The settlement of Tetyukhe was founded in 1899 in Primorskiy Krai in the Far East, with the founding of a lead and zinc mine by Swiss immigrant Julius Brynner, the granfather of actor Jul Brynner. The name (an old Chinese name literally meaning "river of wild boars") was changed to Dalnegorsk in the 1970's. Tetyukhe Pristan (=pier) is the seaport 35km east of the town, having the status of a populated area since 1927 and today renamed Rudnaya Pristan.

August 4This 34mm black "RAYMOND/Mi." (Mississippi) CDS and "10" rate stamp were applied to this stampless folded letter in 1848. 10c was the zone rate per 1/2 ounce letters sent over 300 miles (effective Jul. 1, 1845 to Jun. 29, 1851). This post card was sent from Copenhagen, Denmark in 1936 with an upside down pair of 10o orange, perf. 13 "The Little Mermaid" stamps (Scott 248; Oct. 4, 1935).

Cover from Vladivostok telegraph office to Moscow, 21/8/1928. The cover is franked at 25k with definitives - the registered domestic rate was 20k, so we probably have to do with an overweight letter. The non-standard registration label (i.e no indication of the registered character of the sending) is perfed on three sides, with a pre-printed registration number.

August 5This 3c black brown, perf. 11x10.5 stamp (Scott 1081), issued on this date in 1956, depicts Wheatland, President James Buchanan's home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861.

Cover from Sheglovsk (renamed Kemerovo in 1932 - interesting violet cds with Kuznetsk Okrug and Siberia notations) to Moscow, 9/8/1930. Express sending with characteristic rose Express bilingual label + violet rectangular Sheglovsk handstamp with handwritten number. Franked at 75k with 70k "large head" and 5k "Red cavalry" commemorative. The Express rate was 70k, so the 5k overpayment is unusual (could it signify an Avis de reception charge?).

Hi Vasia, In my experience, in English language countries, the cover would bear a large "AR" in handwritten text, or AR in a circle, hammer. The AR option was important, and it was made abundantly clear on the cover, if the service had been requested. Any Idea how much 5k was at that time? substantial overpayment? Another thing to consider, generally, the AR fee was paid in stamps, which were adhered to the AR card, not the cover. Of course, there is always the possibility of exceptions. AR Cards were generally Pink worldwide, or shades thereof. AR cards were introduced 1875

I think that indeed the 5k overpayment on my cover does NOT represent an Avis de Reception charge, given that there is no trace of such a service on the cover. The normal Express charge of 70k breaks down as follows: 10k for the domestic letter rate + 10k for registration + 50k for the Express fee. The 5k "overpayment" to this charge might correspond to an overweight charge - see my cover from August 4th, with a similar 5k overpayment to the 20k domestic registered letter rate. Maybe the first overweight increment (above 15gr of weight) was 5k and not a full 10k.

August 7The 26mm red, octagonal postmark of Portland, Maine and manuscript "10" rate marking (the 30 to 80 mile zone rate) were applied to this stampless letter in 1834.

August 11Postmarked in Indianapolis, Indiana on this date circa 1881-1883 (the domestic letter rate was reduced from 3c to 2c on Oct. 1, 1883; the 1c gray blue, perf. 12 stamp (Scott 206) was issued in August 1881). The Indiana Department of Public Instruction is now called the Indiana Department of Education but its Head remains the Superintendent of Public Instruction. This 4c red violet, precancelled postal card, issued November 19, 1962 (Scott UX48) was postmarked in Abilene, Texas on this date in 1966.

August 12th, 1922
Large-sized cover from Tashkent to New York. Franked 2x10k IMPERF, i.e at 200.000R (the previous rate which had ended on 17/6/1922). Assessed postage-due with large “T” and circular “Due 12 cents” in New York. The amount due was collected with the affixing and cancelling of a block of 6x2 cents postage-due stamps (Ithaca, 14/9/1922).
From the Turkestan Entomological Station of Plant Protection to the Department of Entomology at the College of Agriculture of Cornell (to famous entomologist Professor Cyrus Richard Crosby). One of the few known covers with use of the 10k imperf, especially as late as 1922.
A Duplex Postage Due Hammer, the first time I have ever seen that. Must have moveable value type also.
