August 17th, 1928
Large-sized cover from НИЖНИЙ- НОВГОРОД П.Т.О. No 3 (Nizhny Novgorod) to Riga (no backstamp). Franked at 68k with 3x18k “Large Heads” and a 14k Esperanto commemorative. The registered letter rate is 28k, so the +40k surcharge has to be due to the weight of the letter, although the weight increments are unknown to me (they might be in steps of 5k - see earlier covers from August). The non-standard registration label is perfed with a pre-printed registration number.

August 18 1846 folded letter/stampless (which is odd since stamps was certainly around in 1866?) 5 cents was due upon it's arrival by the recipient.

Jeff, if the date on the stampless letter is 1846 then it isn't at all odd that there is no stamp (the first U.S. stamp was issued July 1, 1847 and I'm not sure why/how the 1866 date came about in your post).
Rod, according to this reference, the first Jersey Shore (or Waynesburg) Post Office opened on April 1, 1805.

I wrote the wrong info and hurriedly corrected it. Sorry for the confusion. Re-edit; scored through wrong info but left it so responses make sense.

Jeff, have you ascertained when the Post Office opened at Jersey Shore? The short answer is no. There was actually history that goes back to the minutemen and the canals. A very long time ago. I imagine Fort Antes was probably a postal stop way back but an official USPO dat...no.

August 20th, 1921
Small cover from Petrograd to Luzern, Switzerland (6/9/1921). Registered with standard inland “З” label, it received Moscow cds of 25/8/1921 and 3- triangle expedition oval of 28/8/1921. Franked with 3x40R + 1x20R of first Soviet definitive issue, all tied by the 20/8 Petrograd cancel. Scarce use of the low-denomination stamps of the first issue - the international registered letter rate jumped from 20R to 2.000R (!) on August 25th, making these stamps obsolete. The franking – 140R – does not correspond to any officially published rate (unless the rate to foreign destinations changes daily from 15/8 – the date of the new domestic rate - in anticipation of the 25/8 international rate change).
August 20th, 1923
Cover from Moscow to Berlin (Tempelhof), 23/8/1923. Registered Airpost letter with standard orange-border label of Moscow and “Mit Luftpost” red rectangular handstamp. Franked with all values of the first commemorative series of the USSR (Agricultural Exhibition): a pair of the 1R, a pair of the 2R, a pair and a single of the 5R and a pair of the 7R, for a total of 35R, i.e the correct rate for the period up to 20/8. These stamps were issued the date prior to the letter’s dispatch and they are scarce used on cover. The letter is philatelic-exchange correspondence to Pohl, bearing a copy of Michel Ia (250r/35k overprint on the 1918 issue)- the sender paid a tax based on the catalogue value of the stamps enclosed (as per the Yvert & Tellier catalogue).

Ryan, thank you for pointing out this lot. It is always useful to learn what items in one's field are selling for. Apparently, this lot did not sell at the NZD 7.500 estimate, but at NZD 6.750 or 32/item (around 27 USD per item). It is difficult to say if it was worth it, given that the only example from the lot that is shown (plate 15) is a cover in the 15-20 USD range.
To give you a rough idea the cover I showed yesterday (August 21st) is in the 40 USD range. On the other hand, if you go to the cover with the Agricultural Exhibition stamps that I showed on August 20th, we move to an entirely different category. A registered airmail letter posted on the same day from Moscow to Berlin with the 35R rate made up with a 20R soldier defin + only 3 stamps of the set, i.e 2x5R, 2x2R and 1R sold on Ebay for 837 USD!! in 2010 to a knowledgeable collector.
So it all depends on what was in this lot and how many interested and experienced collectors were there!

August 22nd, 1921
Inflation-period cover from Kiev to New York, 12/10/1921, through Moscow with 3-triangle oval expedition mark of 30/8. Registered with inland “З” label of Kiev. Franked at 20R with a 20k revalued Arms. An additional 1230R is levied in cash with a violet “oplachen” (=paid) handstamp on the backflap.
The domestic registered letter rate had jumped to 1.250 rubles on August 15th, while the international registered rate had remained at 20 rubles (!) before being set to 2.000 rubles on the 25th. During the interim period of 10 days, theoretically at least, international letters were dirt cheap! However, in Kiev the Head of the provincial postal/telegraphic section issued a circular on August 15th stating that:
"…A common order is established for foreign registered mail the payment for which must be collected by postage stamps in the amount of the previous rate equal to twenty rubles; as to the part of amount which is missing to the new [domestic!] rates, i.e. 1230 rubles up to 15 grams…, it should be collected in cash with marking this on the letter covers and senders' journals. The payment for ordinary letters abroad remains temporarily as before, i.e. 10 rubles for each"».
The cover is addressed to the Jewish-American socialist newspaper, "Forward".
