Nice Paquebot cover with mixed franking: It is my understanding that paquebot mail posted aboard a ship with postage stamps of the ship’s registry, in this case Bermuda, did not require additional stamps of the country of destination, in this case the United States. Of course, I could be wrong as I sometimes am. Can you clarify please? JeffS

16 November 1947. Salvador, Bahia, Brazil (based on return address, not the postmark) to Tacoma, Washington, U.S.A. via Air Post. Salvador is a coastal city about 500 miles south of Brazil’s eastern-most coastal city of Recife. The letter reached the United States (New York City postmark) on 24 November and received a Tacoma postmark the following day. Stamps (Scott catalogue) are: Sc438 A76 500r light brown issued in 1936-37 Sc506 A179 800r bright violet issued in 1940-41 Sc576 A185 200r brown orange issued in 1943 ScC64 AP21 2.20cr issued in 1947 ScRAB1 PTSP1 40c+10c bright red issued 15 November 1947 as part of “Aviation Week” and compulsory on all domestic correspondence mailed during the week of 15-22 November 1947. No issue is particularly valuable today. What does the “38608” at the bottom of the cover represent? Might the semi-postal Postal Tax issue have been numbered or somehow counted to determine how many Brazilian airmail letters were mailed during Aviation Week?? The 8 days between posting and New York City argues against travel by air on some part of that journey.
