It is an extraordinary collection. Beauties like this happened once in Swiss blue moon. By regulations they weren't supposed to happen at all. This may have been from a block of multiples paying for a service, misstruck when the clerk was banging away, wack wack wack wack.

I've only been involved with Swiss philately for about 6 months; however, I jumped in with both feet early on and It's been pulling hard on me ever since. I was incredibly fortunate to win a used accumulation of early to mid Swiss in several stockbooks. Whoever put those books together was a cancel freak, 90% of the accumulation were SONs / CDS. I was surprised that I bid in the first place and even more surprised when I won. Some kind of past life kharma kicked in here to explore before I go... I'm sure enjoying the ride. Today was a lucky day, I won a Zumstein 1999/2000 2 volume catalogue set as my Christmas present to myself this year. I'm really looking forward to it even though it's in German / French. It should arrive before Christmas. Aside from that, I've taken quite an interest in some of the Bundesfeier Postcards. I love some of the art from that series and started assembling a lovely group already. Pre-Federation postal history is also looking very attractive... Rob

November 22, 1944 ... and a CDSl was applied to a 1d UK stamp on a re-used envelope going from Lauder, Berwickshire to Halifax, Nova Scotia. You can see the original envelope, stamp and address through the wartime 'paper saving campaign' label. Lauder is in the Scottish Border region about 43KM south-east of Edinburgh.

22 November 1947. Tananarive (Antananarivo), Madagascar to Tacoma, Washington USA. "Tananariv" is the French name for Antananarivo, the capital and largest city of Madagascar (source: Wikipedia). I was surprised to learn the city sits at an elevation of almost 1300 meters. The stamps on the front are Scott Malagasy Republic C1 50c, 150 5c, 158 65c, 275 1f, & C38 1.5f. The back is mostly Scott "Malagasy Republic" 1930-44 issues (the #147-168 series): #147 1c, 149 4c, 181 45c, 274 80c, 154 25c, 152 15c, 199 55c, 148 2c, 180 3c, and 150 5c.

November 23, 1905 .... and a London E. C. machine cancel was applied to a picture postcard of Niagara Falls. Looks like a Columbia single-impression machine cancel introduced in 1901 (10-86 - three line town die without lines with six straight bars). The image on the card is a Winter view take from the American side of the Falls. The tower on the right on the image is the Moose Tower Observatory. A steel tower, 250 feet high, it was constructed overlooking the falls in 1888. It had elevators (who would want to walk up the stairs in the ice and snow?). It no longer exists, in 1906 the tower was dismantled and shipped to St. Louis where it was re-erected for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The bridge visible on the left of the card was built in 1897-98 and, at the time, was the largest arch bridge in the world. It had a double track for trolley cars and a pedestrian walkway with room for horse carriages. It was known as the Honeymoon Bridge. Sadly, it no longer exists either. It collapsed in 1938. The message is written in code ... one that I have not been able to break (at least not yet). I assume, since it was addressed to a Miss Shirley at 66 King William St., it is either a bit of fun between two young friends or perhaps a romantic message not to be read by others. Stamp:UK - Edward VII - Definitive Series Issued on November 26, 1904 1/2d, Pale yellowish-green SG 217 Postcard:American Falls from Goat Island, Niagara (Nr. 564) Publised by: The Photochrome Company, Litd. London King William St. in 1890. Photograph by Francis Frith (1822-1898), Public Domain

Always up for a puzzle Hugh and this one has certainly caught my attention :-) If I am not mistaken the addressee's name, 'Shirley' is in the first line,
If it is a simple substitution or transposition cipher, it may be easy enough to crack with this little information...
Have fun and happy deciphering!
