The U.S. documentary series of 1898 included 14 stamps featuring a battleship. The "Battleships" as they are commonly referred to were issued in 13 denominations from 1/2 cent (2 stamps) through 80 cents (R161 thru R172). Two types of rouletting are found on this issue: an ordinary rouletted 5-1/2 and a hyphen hole perforation 7. The stamps of this series are watermarked with a double-line USIR (Wmk191R). This 1 cent, pale blue stamp from that series is roulletted 5-1/2 (Scott 163).

Maybe one of the ships that is on the largest number of different stamps is the SMS "Hohenzollern", which is featured on most issues from the German colonies for the period 1900 to 1919. The ship made the link between the colonies and Germany. Two examples below. The smaller format was for the issues from 2 pfennig (although most series start with the 3pf value) to 80 pf, and the larger format for the high-value 1 Mark to 5 Mark.
