First of two groups of Mailboat issues from Guernsey. Courvosier of Switzerland designed and printed (by photogravure) this set of four stamps that shows Mail Packet Boats of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. These boats brought not only mail but passengers between the bailiwick and the mainland. The stamps were issued February 10, 1972.

Second of two groups of mail boat stamps from Guernsey. These stamps feature mail boats which have served the England-Channel Islands route in the 20th century. The largest ship is the "Sarnia", with 3,989 gross tonnage. Released on March 9, 1973, the stamps were printed by photogravure by Helio Courvoisier of Switzerland.

Thanks Chris - my late father hit the jackpot on these "beauties" - I am very happy to show them and there are more but "scanning time" is of essence......lol René

The French Post Office has decided to print some money and gouge collectors with a yearly set of "Philatelic treasures" sheets (10 per set + 1 special one for subscribers only) where they reprint, as very high face value blocks, some great classics of French Philately. One of which is the Paquebot Normandie, from the 2016 series. (I received the 2018 set today). The original: And the reprint sheet:

A side benefit to re-cataloguing your stamps is that you rediscover stuff you had forgotten you had, such as these two plate blocks from Canada (SC# 776-79 [the 14c issues] and SC#744-47 [the 12c issues], form 1978 and 1977 respectively).

As an archipelago, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon has of course many stamps with naval themes. Here is an unusual one, a series on shipwrecks still present on their shores. Displayed are YT#822 (The Fulwood, from 2004), #857 (The Transpacific, from 2005), #784 (The Troutpool, from 2002), #876 (The Penny Fair, from 2006), and #806 (L' Afrique, from 2003). The Penny Fair one I received today!

The TAAF (French Southern and Antarctic Territories) depend a lot on the "Marion Dufresne", the research vessel that does a yearly cruise from France to these remote outposts, and is therefore featured on many of their stamps. In 2008, it was featured of a definitive issue (YT #520) also used on postal stationary. The single stamp: Front side of the postcard: Back side of the postcard:

A side benefit to re-cataloguing your stamps is that you rediscover stuff you had forgotten you had... and starting the second stockbook I find a third accompanying set (Sc #670-73, from 1975):

And then this one (Sc #1104-07, from 1986). Note the plate error on the bottom left stamp (Hudson Bay discovered), compared to the fifth stamp on top, the pink patch in the middle left.

From the "Oeuvres Coloniales" series issued by Petainist France in 1944, three sets with boats in the picture. These stamps are never found used because the French colonies had joined the France Libre of General de Gaulle and would of course never use stamps with Petain's effigy on them! I'm not even sure they were sent to the colonies at all. The colonies instead either used older stamps overprinted "France Libre" (some of those issues are very sought after and difficult to find, not to mention prohibitively expensive, even more so on actual mail having circulated), or stamps printed in London. One of the stamps in this Petain series (actually from the first incarnation of the series without the overprints) stars in an "Exploring stamps" Youtube episode, where the host notices that an older design had been re-used and simply inverted for the purpose of preparing the stamps for this issue. This is actually true for most of the colonies, but not quite all. Here, for instance, the designs for Dahomey and Togo are reprints, but the one for New Caledonia is new.

Putting away the Dahomey stamps from the post above, I find the ones below, which I hope you'll agree are too beautiful to pass up: Dahomey YT PA #55-58, from 1967.

Extracted from the colonial series emitted for all 21 French Colony postal administrations on the occasion of the Paris 1937 World Expo, the green 30c issue featuring two sailships by a tropical coastline. I added a bonus 22nd issue, from French India with a "France Libre" overprint, as discussed in a previous post.
The stamps are all the same size, sorry for the spurious rescaling.

Of course, the " Marion Dufresne" is not the only ship to visit the TAAF, so here are a few other recent examples:

Another French archipelago with lots of opportunities for naval themes: Wallis & Futuna. Featured are, from left to right: The "Reine Amelia", YT #171, 1965. Also exists with an S.O. (Service Officiel) surcharge. Would love to find one! A local pirogue, YT # 174, 1969. Part of a series about traditional life in W&F. Another traditonal pirogue, YT #840, issued in 2015. The "Jacques Cartier", YT #747, issued in 2011, for a relief mission after cyclone Toma.

This one has a family connection for me. It was issued by France, in 2009 (YT# 4423-24), to commemorate the farewell around-the-world cruise of the "Jeanne d'Arc" helicopter carrier. My cousin, a photographer in the French Navy at the time, was assigned to the "Jeanne d'Arc" for that tour, as the official Navy photographer on board. So I suspect the stamps are at least partly inspired from pictures he took (and he does have one of those berets!).

The Tercenary issue of Reunion island becoming part of France, issued in 1942 by Vichy France (and therefore never actually used in the Reunion itself). Note the use of "Postes Francaises" which is a marker of Vichy France issues, since they could not use "Republique Francaise (RF)". YT#180-185.

Thanks for showing your "beauties" , Xavier - I have never been to SPM, right close to Newfoundland - from New Brunswick it would be simple by flight but there does not exist any - you have to boat into NFLD and take the route and then another short Ferry !!
