I have started to create custom pages for Finland, using Facit Special Classical. I am impressed with the level of details in the catalog, but frustrated by how it is structured. Rather than splitting series in different section for each type of perforation, paper type etc (Like Michel or Scott does) - all possible varieties for each denomination is presented together. For certain denominations with lots of varieties, shades, papers, printings etc this method ends up being complicated and little user friendly. Well well, that's my little rant of the day. Except for that, Facit is brilliant, even listings in dual language (Swedish/English) which is convenient as I am making my pages in English, and some of the Swedish expressions are not understandable even for a Norwegian. (Swedish and Norwegian languages are very close, but obviously not when it comes to philatelic terms)
Wishing you all a great day!

Today I’m unpacking a big box of booklets. I intended to submit them for consignment to an Ebay dealer in the U.K., but the first batch of booklets did VERY poorly, so I decided to nix the idea and list them on Colnect for trade. It took FOUR MONTHS for this box to travel across the pond and back. Mailed on December 9 using priority international rate (which cost $70!) it arrived in the U.K. after a week or so, but it kept getting bounced around. We think it was in customs waiting for someone to figure out the tariff on a box of stamp booklets. Finally, my friend contacted the post and told them to mark the box return to sender. It was placed on some glacially slow boat sometime in early February and arrived back in the USA in early March. Then it sat in port for a while before someone decided to ship it to Jacksonville. There it was like a ball in a pinball machine. The tracking showed it arriving in Jacksonville, then leaving Jacksonville, then arriving in Jacksonville then leaving Jacksonville AGAIN. We had submitted claims and emails to no avail, so this time I got on the phone and hammered through until I reached a real live person. Amazingly - the next day it arrived in Palm Beach, then Fort Pierce then FINALLY Port St Lucie. The contents appear to be intact. Here is the box:

René Also decided on a giveaway with Mexico-Honduras-Brazil "dups" but in the 2 weeks to come......more will be added. Today I also bought a Canada 4a cover -better scan when it arrives, Jon blaamand and Chris Beryllium Guy !! My late dad owned a Canada #1 + other classics and he also bought the Seaway Inverted in 1985 for $10,000.00 - he was very proud of that stamp

Not much stamping today- busy working from home !!! but I may try to get everything I soaked Saturday out of the 'flats" and ready for sorting.... or maybe at least pre-sort. I need to stay on top of this as I just won an Austria lot of ~ 1800 stamps (yes, lot's of dupes, but as with most things that attract, I see something i do not have/or want!) And I have another large lot of Sower and Sage coming (one can never have to many untill your pages are finalized!!) A small lot of Belgium that I thought had been lost arrived at my office today (from Argentina) and one of my co-workers is mailing to me Scot 92 - 105a, which I have all as mint, but this lot has the highest denomination (also the largest stamp in the series) postally used, so I am anticipating it arriving maybe as soon as tomorrow! Stay stampy, stay well everyone! Lots of new members - welcome all!!

Today I sorted and put into Varios, having to redo several pages as i didn't leave quite enough room, so I order another 100 pack of Varios and then ended up purchasing a France "lot" up to ~ 1950 from a gentlemen in Wisconsin I have purchased from twice before now, for not much more than what a tank of gas costs me several months ago (and since I'm not driving anywhere.... ) He estimated 6000+ stamps, 2 albums and a large binder full of stock pages. i told he could just send pages and keep the albums and binder.
Lots of dupes, but quite a few early including a Napoleon 5 Fr, and what looks like Type I sages in the smaller green denomination.... a bunch of Pasteur, shields, Sowers.... you get the idea
And i negotiated for another early lot of Austria (isn't that what the stimulus check is for?)
I see a give away on the horizon- I need to go through those countries I do not collect and offer them up to a good home. Almost at 1500 posts... that might be a good time!
Stay healthy everyone! TSF needs you!

Been awhile since I've posted, so can't recall all I've been doing... But most recently going through my early Armenia and Azerbaijan and enjoying learning about the range of different printings and forgeries on them, and trying to sort out my collection that way. Very interesting and learning quite a bit - now trying to decide how best to layout custom pages to best show the genuine/forgery for the Armenia issues.
Also broke down my US collection, and posted the best bits for sale, as decided it was time to focus a bit more on countries I actually do want to collect...

Despite sometime in the garden, seeding, fertilising and tending to the plot of bumble-bee orchids now in bloom, I did manage to bid on a few lots and follow a couple of auctions this week.
For the Spink's sale mentioned in an earlier thread here, I noted competitive bidding on the day I took part with strong demand for the Middle East and Asian material. At the same time, several rare varieties and multiples were highly sought after, surpassing expectations and easily achieving their estimates. Alas, my pockets were not deep enough to get the items I was interested in, but it is good to see a strong market for better quality and rarer material.
One of the lots sold that I was able to catch as part of my watching the sale on-line was this sleeper, Lot 1132 France 1945-46 and 1947-51 specialised selection of French material,
'1945-46 and 1947-51 Marianne, specialised selection in album, stockbook and loose contained in a carton, including Proofs in black, booklets, coil strips, blocks and sheets, pre-obliteres, paper join pairs and strips, overprints for Algeria, Reunion, Epreuves de Luxe, Artist Proofs, large format 20f., 225f. and 50f. so called Italian forgeries, Postal Stationery, training stamps, 1949 Stamp Centenary Epreuves de luxe, etc., chiefly fine. A wonderful group' Estimate: £500 - £700, Sold £3,500.
The results from the UPA Sale n.º 77 should be known today and hopefully, I will have better luck here :-) For others that may have participated in this sale as well, hopefully you will get some, most or all of the lots you were interested in! With the new material, I need to organise some room and after reading paul1 posting of " how not to curate a collection" and the comments associated with, I realised it is time to put some order into some of my own accumulations. Good incentive and thanks for the encouraging post ;-)
Just as with the gardening, there is never a shortage of opportunity with stamping...
Happy collecting!

No sorry blaamand, something got lost in the translation :-) As mentioned, my pockets were not deep enough to get the items I was interested in but instead, the French lot was just an example of the strong market for better quality and rarer material that was available. Alas, I was merely an observer for the sale of lot n.º 1132 and only witnessed the hammer fall when it was sold.
Perhaps I will have better luck with my lots and the UPA sale when they are made public later today...
Happy collecting!

Vince, thanks for your post, which reminded me to check my email for the UPA results, and I am happy to say that I actually won the two items that I bid on.... woo hoo!! They were two classic HK high-denomination definitive stamps: one KEVII issue and one KGV issue. I can't remember off-hand which ones specifically, but I will post more about them in the appropriate thread once they have arrived. These sorts of purchases are both exciting and a bit daunting. I hadn't done one of these in a long while, so at the moment, I am a bit stunned!

ha@renden The 5 Fr Napoleon is one I have (a very pale shade) and hard to tell from photo but i thing it may have a tear/missing some perfs, but as there are several shades for this, maybe it's one of the others and will make a good filler for now. I got it mainly for the Sower, Sage and Pasteur (I am missing two shades to complete). The gentlemen I am purchasing from is a US collector, but has thus far sent me material with predominantly sound material and I have been happy with the lots, although no sleeping gems yet, but it keeps me plenty busy!!
I think it was win-win for us both. He gets rid of stuff he doesn't collect nor study, and I get hours of sifting enjoyment!

indeed, I think that some sellers overlook how much additional time is put into lots with "many rare, High CV..." that are on pages and generally in no order what-so-ever, and often cantain a fair amount of culls. I equate it to lot like being a musician- venue owners want a rehearsed polished band to bring thousands of dollars of equipment into their venue, et- up play 3 hours, break it down and pack it home for free beers... and the exposure... Fortunately playing music was never my only livelihood... or i would have perished long ago... and that's why it is a hobby

Disaster has struck, after wading through my Japanese stamps, printing pages for them I thought I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and be able to move on to other projects, but no, disaster has struck, not one single stamp hinge left in the flat, my order of 5 packets (1000 in each) has not arrived. Do I pack Japan away and try to sort out some other stamps that don't need hinges (e.g. covers, miniature sheets or using stamp mounts) and forget Japan for a year or so or do I leave Japan out and hope that the hinges arrive today or Monday? Aagghh

The last couple of days I have been spending more time on Colnect updating my collection in order to start swapping stamps at some hazy point in the future. I have a long way to go. To this point I have only 652 stamps on Colnect but I have 100000s I am sure. I am thinking of this as a long term project. One I seem to have time for right now.

Today I prepared some stamps going to a collector in Slovenia. Tok a lot of time. Then I was on a long bikeride, first day with sun and no wind. And I discovered that I had won a Norway No 2 on auction. Inspired by thegubman I placed a bid on a nice stamp. No one else did so I got it to the lowest bid. 3 ring cancel 48 DRAMMEN. The next cancel is touching, but it is much better than the stam I already have in my collection. I have decided to use some money on better Norwegian classic stamps. Paid the same price as I did for a whole stock book with rubbish from east Europa....
Borrow pic from the auction site.

Still sorting and pitting into Varios... and now several times re-doing the Vario to accommodate the stamps. Found this this morning Prussia, I think it is 1850 Sc# 8a no watermark, solid background... there were reprints a few years later, but I'm not sure how to differentiate- If anyone knows, please chime in!

For me, this weekend has been soakin' and sortin' time. Thanks to Gavin ( feebletodix), who has kindly introduced me to the monthly Oxford Stamp Auctions, I have been buying up lots of old material, in the form of boxes, stock books, albums, etc. Real treasure hunt stuff, just as Mark ( madbaker) was talking about in a previous post. In truth, it may not be the best use of my stamping time, as I do find plenty of irretrievably damaged material, but there is something very satisfying (to me, at least) in taking an old decrepit album which is falling apart and was seemingly not treated well for a long time, if ever, and finding nice stamps in there. I am really enjoying it, but I do admit it is taking up a great deal of my time, sometimes for not all that much reward in terms of really nice stamps found. Still, I carry on.... This particular album is for WW stamps, and it was published between 1901-1910. I have been able to deduce that since the header for Great Britain shows as KEVII as the sovereign. But it was still in use long after that, as there are stamps from as recently as the early 1960s that have been mounted on its pages. In order to "digest" all of this material, I am taking it a couple of pages at a time, and will try to do these soak/sort sessions 2-3 times each week, until I can get through the whole thing. As another added idea, perhaps slightly novel, I have decided that I really like the old page headers, so I am trying to salvage the ones that I can, and I am planning to use those when I set up my Hagner stock sheets for the given countries. So don't be surprised if you start to see more of those from me. As my good friend Jon ( blaamand) would say: Stay stampy, all!

Great post Chris. I know exactly what you mean, it might at times seem to be very much time spend on going through old collections, with little new finds or discoveries. In particular when our own collections get stronger, the feeder collections have less and less new material to offer. Still - the enjoyment is in the chase, the hope of finding a variety you're missing, or a hidden gem. I always get thrilled by seeing such album pages like the ones in your previous post, the 'hunter' in me instantly kicks in and look for hidden gems among the ordinary stuff.
An even the most ordinary stamps might have extraordinary postmarks - or postmarks of interest to Postal history, like forerunners, maritime etc. So, now that you've also got interested in postmarks, you will be able to get even more fun out of it!
Good idea to hang on to the headers, some of the headers in old albums are just awesome, even if any data etc is out of date.
Enjoy my friend, take the time and I hope you'll find some keepers.
(and if not, I can always use any postmark you don't care about, haha)

I'm with B.G. in the sense of excitement when 'soaking and sortin' old stuff from Ed. VII, or come to that anything pre WWII - it's the unpredictable and the chance to find something good that makes all that messin with water worth while - just ploughing through and never knowing what you might find, and doesn't time fly when you're having fun.
Just briefly, and avoiding talk of expensive professional kits, what do folk here find best once the stamp is free of a piece and ready for pressing and drying - I've been trying Plastazote Foam as the lower support and a wax release sheet on the top, then a heavy weight on top of a stiff board - they can take a while to dry though. The Dutch East Indies sound v. interesting.
