I am back from the Houston show a week now and am finally recovering from the strain of it. Three days on my feet and no afternoon naps took its toll.
I was able to do a little shopping - picked out 130 covers from a dealer's 10c cover stock; three Orange Free / Orange River cards; two interesting Russian tourism cards from the early 1930s; and a selection of MNH South Moluccas sets which took me back to my youthful days collecting. Will post some pics as I find time.

What I collect: I collect to much, world wide!

My friend in the antiques and collectibles business has just dropped off another project for me. The deal is I can keep what I want and put the balance of the stuff in some semblance of order to list in one of his MaxSold auctions. My expectations are not great but I see many hours of hunting through countless envelopes sorted by country. Maybe the treasures are in the bottom. These photos are just as it arrived. This is what we all dream of. But it is a lot of hard but useful work.

On the philatelic butcher bench this week! I pick what I need for my Collection, sell most of the rest and toss away the common masses.

I just received a lot of a few thousand Austrian stamps, so I started combing through that. I’ve already come across some stamps I don’t have yet (including some coarse print Franz) and some nice cancels; a handful of Trieste, a Trient, and a Ukrainian town.

Yesterday and today were bad stamp days with some good touches.
First, I opened a box o' junk I'd bought cheap from an ad. The stamps were actually better than I'd expected, but...mold!! Mold City!! I tried to dream up some way to save them - I could borrow an ozone chamber from next door - but my wife has trouble with all kinds of pollutants, chemicals, perfumes, etc. And she never complains when I blow two weeks' worth of meal money on a collection from somewhere like Moldova (yes, I did that). So if I end up tossing this box it's a tiny price to pay. I haven't gotten a box o' junk in years, though, and I thought it would help me relax for a few hours.
The arthritis in my right thumb flared up. Arthritis in your thumb hurts, sometimes it's hard to control tongs, sometimes I drop things, and I can't even get any sympathy because nobody wants to hear about your stupid thumb!
I put Romania and its shifty watermarks aside for now and brushed off my Finland collection. I added a few things to it - mostly some semi-postals, I don't remember where I got them - and came to the conclusion that I don't really need to collect Finland after about 1955. Except for definitives. Finland has those four definitive series with excellent little lions. They're staying. So's everything from 1917 through 1955; many of those stamps don't look like anything from anywhere else. Actually, I'm keeping everything from before 1917, but I only have a few anyway. After 1955, I can collect them by topic if I'm interested in that topic. It's not that I'm down on Finland or anything. Of course not. From all I've ever read or heard, they've built an extraordinarily admirable society. But I can't collect everything, and there isn't much from those more recent philatelic times that grabs me by the proverbial lapels and demands my attention. Anyway, I did a terrible job putting together the album the first time around, so I've been correcting the pages with the most egregious blunders, and the part of the collection that I'm keeping should soon look OK, and maybe even better than that. Like, spiffy. That's a good goal to strive for.

Lately, I've done a lot of "philatelic travelling", with little real profit for my collections. With covid-19 stop, I wanted to visit some friends that live quite far away (for our standards). So, on tuesday afternoon/evening, a drove 100 km North to Ripoll, to meet a girl-friend of mine, who's the chairman of the local philatelic club. After a long chat, sharing experiences and memories, she gave me a box of phone-cards (do you remember them?) to be sold at our thrift shop (opened since last week) and also some Spanish civil war cinderellas. As they're not Catalan, they're outside my collecting interest; but I should find a home for them.
On Saturday early morning, I went to Almacelles (190 km West from Barcelona) to meet two friends, that I ussually see at Artesa de Segre Summer meeting. Having that being cancelled on the last two years, and as one of them is on the small team that we're assembling the Catalan Cinderella's Catalog, we'd some items to be properly scanned as well as to chat on stamps and cinderellas. We spent a nice day and came back with a couple of cinderellas for my collection.
On Sunday, I went to the stamp market with no chance and, finally, yesterday I meet at Barcelona's downtown another friend who's a great cinderella sppecialist, having written some books and article. It was just for the pleasure of chatting and meeting after the summer, that he spends on the island of Menorca (about 1/2 hour flight from Barcelona)
It seems that stamping season has actually started... Let's hope that I'll find some more items for my collections.

Went last night to a local stamp club that's recently moved to a location just 1 mile away. One of the displays was a near complete (to 1980) commercially used collection from Sierra Leone by Hugh Jefferies (of S.G.). Excellent.

When I see a stack of books, my immediate question if someone is soaking stamps.
I finished mounting my Zanzibar. I did an initial sort but as I mounted them I discovered there were a lot more differences between them as there are about 10 different definitive series with similar looking portraits, watermarks, inscriptions, and colors.

I was planning on sorting through all the duplicates of New Zealand that I have (all modern) but on opening up a stockbook to search for them, I saw some Canadian. So my plan was altered. I searched yesterday and found quite a few in various stockbooks. I left the definitives from Karsh to the Centennials until today. They had been in this stockbook for at least 50 years! It's about time I did something with them. Unfortunately a couple of the 6¢ black's, with dextrine gum pulled away with the black stockbook material stuck to their backside. Just two though! After 50 years, that's a small price to pay for leaving them there instead of mounting them in album pages!
There are various coils, jump strips, paste-up pairs, block of 4, start/end strips of 4 of which they are collected in full strips of 20 blank pieces of paper. Why such a large un-manageable strip? Two of each is good enough for me, and apparently some others too. There are also numerous singles from booklets, but since I have most booklets, I may just stick them on mailings. I also had some plates of the red "Centennial" postage dues J28-J37 and J29i, J30i & J34ii plus singles of the ribbed effect 1¢ to 4¢.
Lots of other stuff: souvenir sheets, high values, a couple booklets. Now all in ONE stockbook.
Now that that is done, it is time to mount 12 pages of New Zealand and see just what I have left over and sort all the duplicates.
Just that will keep me busy for some time.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

My challenge Robert ( WERT) is to stay out of it. Supper was late tonight. Sadly there is not any good Canadian early stuff I want or need. It would be a shame to pick the mounted stuff so I will send binders right back to my friend and hope he can recover what he paid for it all. I will hold on to the world wide stuff sorted in envelopes to pick through over the winter. There are a couple interesting war error covers I will keep. Also some of the Canadian mint I found in a box for my time for postage.

stainlessb They are nice but I am fortunate to have better copies of most all the classics in these collections. I hate to cherry pick these mounted stamps but if I found a few that were better than mine I may swap them out. My friend is fine with that. If the collections were stronger in classics I would direct him to a high end auction house. As it is I think he will be better trying to sell them at a market he sets up at. The vast majority of these collections are post World War II. It can be a hard sell with used stamps.

Never planned to buy some stamps today but I received a special e-mail from Saskatoon Stamp Centre with offerings of 50% off any of their stamps - they will be closing at the end of the year.
I needed a Unitrade Canada Spec cat # 205 and 206 (had a used 207) for my Canada 1 album - These are KGV "medallion" coil stamps - They did not have a 206 2ç. I bought 2 pairs, 1 of 205 1ç MNH and 1 of 207 Mint HL . CV $74 for both pairs - paid $28C$. I will show them when they arrive. More coming as I will check my inventory for missing spaces (206 coil still missing LOL)

I cannot seem to walk by the pile of stuff dropped off yesterday without picking things out and see what is there. Waiting for coffee to perk I rooted this out. This little box looked like another one full of bundle-ware but I did see some white stock cards on the bottom. I emptied it out and what should I find but 2 50.00 bills and an imperf Canadian beaver. I will soak it and see if I can tell which one it is or whether it is genuine. My friend will be happy about the cash found. I have better copies of the early beavers so may try and sell this one for him once I have a better idea which one it is.

That beaver Scott 15 has had the perforation trimmed off as you can see. I don't see any variety in the stamp, BUT i do not have it in front of me.
Maybe try to sell it for your friend....Just a thought my friend.

I suspected that but had not looked that close yet. I was going to soak hinge remnants off first. It did not seem reasonable that the previous owner would have buried it like that if it was an actual imperf. He has an imperf mounted in his used Canadian binder but I am suspect of that one too so flipped right by his page one. The collection is weak in Canada Victoria era. Thanks for your research Robert.

I’m still working through my big Austria lot. I was picking out the older stuff, but I figured it was a better idea to just start pulling out chunks and sorting as I go. I also decided to create an Austria-only drawer for storage, since I have far more Austria glassines than anything else. I was able to pull another Trieste cancel and a Pergine (Modern Italy) cancel.

While inspecting my Newfoundland stamps commented in another tread by WERT , michael and Beryllium Guy I thought I should try to photograph the stamps. I have a Canon R6, RF 85 f2 macro lens and a led panel with 5600K These stamps I photographed at f8 1/10 sec iso200 imported to Lightroom and increased the texture slider to ca +40. The stamps was random laying on my desktop waiting for a good soaking. Here are the images, what do you think?

No stamping as of right this moment, but today is my last day going to my office! I will become a very, very, part time "consultant" moving forward and working remotely, so i see great progress with my stamping pursuits on the horizon!
First to-do, is to do get some of the pages requiring color printing, so on those occasions when I do have to go to the "office" (which will be maybe once every two or three weeks for a few hours at most) I can print out my color pages, otherwise off the Kinkos or Office Depot (but they seem a bit put off when you bring your own paper)
I thought the day would never arrive!!!

Amongst quarter of a tonne of paper, albums , covers, mint stamps , specialised collections of Belgium and Algeria was a box of 1000 phone cards. Loads of Golf club related cards from Japan that my friend boasted he had spent a fortune on … $10 - $15 per card.. a speculative bubble that had burst by the millennium and I had difficulty even giving them away. His dreams of a fortune blown away by technical advances. so many bits of 20th century miracle technology obsolete and in useable 30years later! Video tapes beta tapes, floppy discs, cellphones that had no camera …..even digital cameras ,

I also bought a 16-page stockbook this week-end and been busying myself with filling it up and re-organizing the newly empty spaces. With the new Fezzan issues I just showed, it was Africa C-G that needed room urgently, so The Gambia ended up moving to the new stockbook by itself (it will need room to grow anyway), and that opened up several pages. Fezzan and Ghadamès moved in, followed by Eritrea and Ethiopia (which grew a lot in the last couple of years thanks to the generosity of some TSF members) and now I'm working on Egypt. With a little luck, there'll still be room for Djibouti and then Cabo Verde to expand, and even a little of bit of space for some B country to move in (Basutoland, Bechuanaland, Burkina Faso, or Botswana, the latter definitely needs some room too). Maybe even Angola will see some benefits.
