Apparently I'm going to be busy today. The post office yielded fifteen packages for me.At the moment I totally hate scotch tape.Personally I've found freezer bags are just so much easier.Last week I destroyed two stamps trying to open a taped four sides glassine.Today I got out the cuticle scissors and am dissecting much more carefully, still a PIA.

Well, today I received one of the rarest of all Ohio Tax stamps in the mail. It is a CO-1c-7Ba pair. The stamp only went through the first printing and never got the second color printed apparently. Supposedly there are only 20 pairs in existence, so I am lucky to have bought it. I already had the single of this stamp, but not the pair. It is getting harder every day to find Ohio tax stamps that I actually need, since I am getting down to only needing the rare stamps now. Hope your day is as good as mine today. I have also shown the regular single stamp for comparison.

I agree, Mike, very nice addition to your collection !! Today, I am still on Hungary stamps inventory. 320 have been done and I am still in the early 1890s, measuring Perfs, looking at various wmks etc. I ddi not think Hungary (early) was such a challenge. From Scott's limited space (albums) I feel I will have to print pages for the first 200 or so. I have not chosen the "modus operandi" yet for this one René

I went to the post office to mail a large flat rate priority mail package with the intent of getting some priority mail stamps added. Well, I learned you need to apply stamps before handing them the package since they did not want to apply them. So, next time first ask for $18 in stamps, apply them, then provide the package. It is not surprising they do not really want to sell stamps.

They do sell stamps at the local post office, but if you hand them an un-stamped letter/package, they will printout a plain B&W label for the stamps instead.
I'd rather stick the stamps on myself, even if it is overpaid. I just have higher values, no lower values. Plus their app overvalued the cost of the 3 letters I just sent out.
Has any of them made it yet?

Yes, the post office sells stamps but apparently not in the same transaction as shipping the package. He kept stating he had to use a sticker (meaning a tracking label) but I said I wanted to use stamps. By this time, he had already printed the meter.

I always use the same post office and the help has gotten to know what I do.When shipping things they almost automatically put the package on the scale and reach into the stamp drawer for postage.Angore they can cancel the metter strip if you request postage ,I've done it.The last package that went out to Nikhil slipped by with a meter strip as it was pretty busy at the window and I didn't want to hold up the line anymore. It's not my normal practice.

I begin my conversation with the window clerk by saying: "I'm sending this to a stamp collector so I need to have stamps on it." They always oblige me but will put one of those $0.00 labels on it.

At my P.O. they know I am a stamp collector and send (all over the world to friends) so there is never a debate on methodology.....just real stamps......I put my own based on weight and International or Country........always note the weight in gms but there is always this "thickness" question so at times I have to buy more.... .real stamps and they have a diversity for me and I do the "cancelling" myself - do not like the Postmark of Edmundston PO but cannot complain more than that !! On a personal basis (stamp-wise) I am still doing inventory on Hungary......many stamps.......and all my earlier (1800s -) "dups" are reserved for my Canadian friend brightonpete (Pete) and Monday, some 150 "dups will ...up to Scott 460......make it to Ontario (I hope), Canada - to Pete. Hope he likes them as I do....not great valuation but the History of these and having them surpasses (in $ worth) the rest.....a WW collector deals with all kind of valuations........and I have more for Pete as inventory goes on.......and on..........my late father had bought so many Magyar Posta stamps that he should end up with close to 1,000 "dups !! This week has been pretty slow on stamps, although I did finish cataloguing my UN stockbooks and album, and I'm now in my British Commonwealth album (Newfoundland on deck). But yesterday I received two packages, so a lot more activity. I was away from my scanner, but this will be fixed today and I'll show some of the nice pieces I got. There were several duplicates in the lots as well, so be on the lookout for some trade offers! renden does get first dibs because I owe him one since he kindly completed my Austrian armed forced semi-postal series from 1915! again!

Nice post, Xavier! Glad to see you more active on the Forum again these days. I know that you have been very busy at work, and now I am sorry to say that I am getting the same way. This coming week, I have three major meetings and multiple presentations to give, so very little stamping on my side. One of the bright spots on the stamping side is that I am still going through the many duplicates you loaned me, and I am still finding stamps I want. I think we will work out our trade for the QV Jubilee stamp sometime before the Christmas break. I am hoping that you will have time to meet during the week of 10th December, as this coming week is not looking great for me. To everyone else, I wanted to say, for a preview of something interesting which will be coming soon, check out this old thread: thestampforum.boards.net/post/51988/threadI have not forgotten my promise from a year ago, so be on the watch for more news sometime in the next week or so....

Yesterday, I got more active in updating my master list of countries in my collections and then reorganized them to get them into the same order as Scott catalog with a few exceptions. The second aspect is to identify pages where in various countries that I need to do something such as identify stamps and decide if I need to update/create new Steiner album pages. The Aden post was one of the first..since I started at the A's.
The future goal is to get all the Steiner PDF's merged into country files (Steiner breaks them up likely due to size) so one country may be in many PDFs but I limit my collection to around 1980 with a few exceptions. I was trying to get a page numbering scheme devised.
With have print your own pages, you have a lot of options and you cannot anticipate every enhancement you could make. If I had say a Scott album I would just have to take it more or less as they provide it and live with it.

On collecting... Being a new member to this forum I saw a huge variety of stamps & ways of collecting, and lots trading this that & the other. My way is decidedly different from most. I tend to specialize in a country or a particular theme. When I search an auction site or dealer website, I’m looking for stuff that I need in my particular collection. I have passed up buying a number of lots, as they have stamps I already have. Why am I buying more that I don’t need? I did that at first when starting my collection of Luxembourg stamps. But stopped soon after, as I didn’t want all of this extra stuff clogging up my stock books. I was so surprised when I received a package from firstfrog2013 . He sent so many Admirals and other classics, that he said was just I was cleaning. He sent more in that package than I had - period! I suppose that’s why I was so bored with the local stamp club that I had joined. Everyone just opened up stock books from dealers or other members to buy stamps here there and everywhere. I just found that too boring. That’s all the meeting was. So I left. I suppose trading with me, there just isn’t much to be had. I have a lot of run-of-the-mill Luxembourg definitives, and a few other spares, but most of my stamps are one-of-a-kind. I guess I’ll just go back to the auctions. All my German stamps are finally on their way now. So I should wait in any case, as I probably have what hrdoktorx (Xavier) is wanting to swap. Who needs more spares? Not me,

Nice thoughts, Pete and you are quite realistic ! As for spares, I have lots, since my late dad bought a few collections.....albums.....etc.... when he decided on "stamping" with me when I was 12 years old. He did beat me fast as he had the financial means to do it. So as I inventory various Countries (up to 740 to this minute....my software tells me so) I find many "dups" for certain Countries which explain why tomorrow, weather permitting, a bunch of older Hungarians are going to make it to you in Ontario and this is not a trade...I..do not expect anything.....this is only out of friendship, which still exists in the Stamp World !! Have a good evening brightonpete ! René

Actually Pete we are not that different. As most collectors I reach the point in any area where what I need determines if I'm really serious about collecting that oountry.Be it the $100 or $1000 mark it is a definite decision that must be made. What I find for distractions are the search for re-entries,watermarks,straight edge stamps, etc. If it happens to involve buying stuff I already have so be it.My best purchases have been spur of the moment aw what the heck bidding. That $5000 war tax block was in a 99 cent lot. Many of the best stamps I own came from old stock books that I just wanted to look over. You never know where those stich watermarks will show up,they exsist. Not saying that's the way to do it but as most I'm on a limited budget and still like to look at stamps.I haven't traded a stamp since I was seven years old,the extras go to people that I meet.

The other thing with me was I was always alone in my endeavors. No one else I knew collected stamps. Or at least admitted to it. No family... no one.
I had joined national clubs, but there’s no real interaction with those, just a monthly magazine. That's why I’m dropping APS & BNAPS. I’ll stick with the RPSC for the next year, and will see later.

Mike, very nice! What is the source of the "only 20 pairs" number? That number comes from the old Hubbel catalog I believe. But it doesn't add up to me. It said that their were 20 pairs and 20 singles known. But a sheet is 100 I believe. That would only account for 60 of the 100 on the sheet. There should be more than that out there.

20 packages of 20 stripes each of stamp mounts arrived today. Yay, Now I can go crazy mounting stamps. I think they meant "strips". Languages eh? I recall at a rest stop on an autobahn restaurant they had peppercorn steak with mushed apples. Mushed apples? Oh, applesauce!
Their rest stops were so much nicer than ours here in Canada!

brightonpete does not know he does not have enough strips when he starts "mounting" those dups of Hungary I sent him Still doing Hungary inventory and my software indicates 598 stamps up to the 40s. Now that I do not have to measure perfs, do wmks etc on every stamp.....it goes faster. Pete also knows (by PM) that 120 more dups are ready, but I am not ready for another mailing (2nd one).....not enough !! René
