Making my own FDCs for new issues is one of my primary collecting interests, as you probably know if you've read my posts. That always slows down toward the end of the year (USPS' latest 2023 stamps came out in October), but it's back in full swing now that we're well into January. I sent off my first round of 2024 FDCs a couple of weeks ago, and I have cachets ready to go out this week for two more new issues. Glad to be back at it!

I have been away from my collections for a few days and used stamps as they were meant to be used. Maybe, one or two will end up in someone's collection one day. At the same time, I picked up a couple extra stamps to gift to a colleague who will give them to his brother-in-law. I bought the stamps on Friday (26 January 2024) at the main post office in Tomar, Portugal. Tomar was the seat of the Portuguese Knights Templar. On a hill above the town stands their castle and convent from the 12th century. The church and pantheon of the Grandmasters of the order stands across the river from the mediaeval town. After the dissolution of the order in 1312 (the arrest of the French Knights Templar on Friday, 13 October 1307, is claimed to be the origin of 'Friday the 13th') the castle and convent abandoned until the Order of the Knights of Christ (essentially the Order of the Knights Templar under a new name) were ordered to relocate to Tomar. The church of the convent is a spectacular example of Manueline (late-Gothic) architecture.

Your scans by the way are great! (nothing worse than small or out of focus images) The Penny Red if you care to submit a closer image, we may be able to identify the plate number (if that is of any interest to you) Looks like it has a "4" in it Otherwise cheers, keep up the good work.

thank you rod222 , I had taken a closeup of two groups the top two rows and the bottom 3 rows on the sheet. if not close enough, will try to upload an individual picture of the penny red. its always good to know more about a stamp. so would appreciate if you can tell me the plate number. double checked in the picture looks like C- N on the top corners and N-C on the bottom corners but I could be wrong. cheers anil

Not much has changed here since my last post.Still under a state of emergency with a curfew from midnight to 5am.I rarely venture out at night and limit my outdoor activities to visiting the local supermarket. The President has declared war on the drug gangs here and to fund this, sales tax will be increased from 12% to 15%.Armed police and military are much more evident on the streets. No stamp purchases as I am still trying to find a way of receiving purchases.A couple of members here have kindly offered to receive purchases in the USA but there is still the problem of getting them to me here in Ecuador. The mail forwarder I was using will not acceot letters any more, just parcels and small packets.A member of the stamp club here has a contact in North Carolina who is a pilot and flies regularly to Ecuador,so that might be one option. However,a lot of my purchases are made on Delcampe and cannot be sent to NC due to problems with collecting sales tax. Buying stamps can be so frustrating.......... I have slowly been organizing my boxes and stockbooks so hopefully will be posting some new pages in the next few days.
This is the most moving post in a long time, ranks second only to matters of health and such.
Who would have thought there was such thing as collecting under adversity? After the collapse of the posts, parcel services and now you've got to deal with this? (And think of my own whining, 'Delcampe blocked Virginia!' Trivial by comparison.) Guess you'll have the best organized collection in Guayaquil? I kinda wish it wasn't.

I finally collected a complete set of "se-tenant" plate position sheets. Originally, I wasn't going to collect anything past about 1980. I had stopped collecting around 1978 with my junior high/high school collection, but then I ended up with some se-tenant sheets once I started collecting again last year. The plate positions kind of intrigued my as far as collecting a full set of the se-tenant plate positions. This is my first set. Some sets have as little as four. Some has as many as eight. Any se-tenants that end up in my collections...I'm planning on getting all the plate positions....just for the challenge. Mike / brookbam

CN-NC The scans are not clear enough for plate ID, but that's OK, you can Identify yourself. The plate number resides in the left and right mandrels, shown in the below "mock-up" (Not my work) The number, I find, is easily noted, just in line with Her Majesty's nose, horizontally. Good Luck! I finally started mounting the German stamps. I also double watermarks. I typically use Clarity fluid but got some Supersafe recently in a lot. The Supersafe fluid has a nasty lingering odor. It seems to wet fast but also dries faster than Clarify. It is labeled benezene free. The bottle has a poor design. The bottom is spherical with a smaller flat section so seems easy to fall over.

Returning to Batum...
The seller of this card on Delcampe titled the listing as
"Batum Batumi Russian empire tangerine garden."
Can a member with knowledge of the language of the caption at lower left verify if that description is close?
Thank you once again for your help.

Might there be a different spelling? The Chakvinsky plantation was an imperial domain in the village of Chakvi, located north-east of Batum. Tea was mainly grown in this region, including on this plantation.

A few days ago a friend called to see if I wanted to look at some stamps that one of his friends was trying to clear out after the loss of his partner. As always I had no great hope. Surprise, surprise they show up today with 3 large boxes of the usual old collections and envelopes of duplicates. Sitting in the condo parking lot I did some rapid looking and gave them the sad news that there was of little value jumping out at me. I suggested a few options for them including some auctions and dealers. I was not very interested but I did throw a low number at them because I do enjoy the therapy of going through old collections. I left them and 5 minutes later the phone rang and they accepted my offer. As they say the rest is history. What have I done!

hdm1950 nice collection of albums. Surely they have a lot of potential. Happy stamping. Spent 2 hours last night sorting a bunch of packages with mixed worldwide. Most of the stamps have been moved to individual country envelopes. Now have too many envelopes. Some countries need to be put into sheets. Also went to the local stamp stores resellers building to find stamps connected with history of flight. Found some interesting stamps there.

The five shilling is particularly lovely - color is so fresh! FYI I don’t see any obvious varieties. Congrats on a very nice set. I’m guessing Dollard? The op looks like the wider type and I can’t differentiate black from blue-black ink from a pic.
Also - looks like you’re going to be busy with that mountain of albums! Have fun. 🤩

For sure the albums will keep me busy. The other box is full of envelopes and boxes with on and off paper stamps. I will tackle them last as I would guess they are duplicates of what are in the albums.

Quiet, Rainy Weekend with Some StampingGreetings, stampers everywhere! I hope you are all as well as you can be. The good news for me is that I have finally got rid of the cough that plagued me for two months. Some new meds have made the difference. Stamp-wise, recent activities have included color study tasks with both Stan ( stainlessb ) and capejack . Stan has been especially helpful by talking me through the download of the PERFOMaster4000 software program, which I am hoping to learn how to use. Handling of actual stamps has been mainly organizational in nature. I have been going through some trade offerings, which has forced me look through my accumulations, and I have managed to consolidate a bit. I also did some soaking, as I come across stamps that need it. I am away from home this afternoon, but I hope to get back to the stamp sorting later tonight. Stay stampy, all!

Just complete page 60 of my Exhibit " Samoa 1840-2000" The Postal transition from Chiefly Kingdom, through colony to Independence. Only 20 more to go . I usually manage about 3 or 4 pages a day but I hope that many of the final 20 will not require a complete re-write and re arrangement so my target to finish the task by next weekend should be achievable

Well with minor edit to one page I have managed to get pages 61-64 sorted to complete Frame 4. Frame 5 will see me finish the WWI censorship period and move quickly through the 1920-50 period of New Zealand Civil administration under League of Nations Mandate and Un Trusteeship I believe most of these pages will work more or less as they are in my Samoa Collection already written up.....but I could be very wrong

This evening I went through the second of the recently acquired Canada albums plus a bit of organizing of one of the boxes. Some more Canadian mint for postage was found. I am finding studying post marks more interesting all the time. These 4 I decided to save for me. The Great Britain Scott 3/ SG 8 was mounted on a sheet by itself written up as the 3rd rarest stamp in the world. If only it were true. I gave the guy I bought the stuff from the bad news. I believe the postmark is 192 for Malmesbury. The Canada 20 cents Widow Weeds has a decent Halifax, NS March 17, 1898 cancel. The 1 cent Jubilee was brown before a peroxide bath. It is faulty but there is a partial RPO post mark for the Port Arthur & W'peg (Winnipeg) Railway. The 1927 Fathers of Confederation has a neat POST OFFICE C.O.D. SPEEDS BUSINESS cancel.

The most exciting part, is hidden by you If the Postmark is 192 (which I doubt) then would it not be KEITH in BANFFSHIRE ? On reflection, I guess it MUST be 192 The barred numerals only reached circa 341 (Wigton) so the preceding numeral must be a 1, 2, or 3 The location KEITH 192 lies between hammers 187 (Jedburgh) and 203 (Kilmarnock)

(Malmesbury is an English Duplex hammer) Your postmark / obliteration were used in Scotland, Single lined numerals with bars (all horizontal) ranging from 14 to 4 192 is Keith Banffshire

rod222 I am no expert on British and Scottish cancels and obliterations. As I do not plan to go deep into them I will just add it to my other Scott 3’s because it is the only one I have with a numerical cancel. I looked at several 192 marks for Keith as well as the ones listed as Mulmesbury and I am still not convinced which are right. Based on the number listed on eBay neither seems that rare.
