Hugh ( hdm1950), I really liked your earlier post showing your recent acquisitions.... lots of really nice stamps there! Would love to know the watermarks on the Hong Kong KGV $2 and $3 stamps, if you are willing to share. Thanks!

rod222 I am no expert on British and Scottish cancels and obliterations. As I do not plan to go deep into them I will just add it to my other Scott 3’s because it is the only one I have with a numerical cancel. I looked at several 192 marks for Keith as well as the ones listed as Mulmesbury and I am still not convinced which are right. Based on the number listed on eBay neither seems that rare. Yes, sadly Allan Oliver's tour de force, Postmark database, has died (like so many fabulous links) Yep, go with what you believe it to be.

Hugh hdm1950, I would concur with Rod, given the 4 bars to the right of the number, it could only be the rectangular Scottish mark and so, Keith, Banffshire. Daniel

Regarding the “third rarest stamp” perhaps the previous owner was trying to state “third oldest stamp”

Thanks to rod222 for questioning my first assumption or I would never have known the existence of at least 2 192 cancels.

Very nice, Hugh ( hdm1950)! I have the 2nd KGV set (Wmk 4 with Script CA) complete, but I am missing that $3 one from the 1st set. I would love to find a copy for myself like yours. Your $10 KGV also looks super. It's the nicest used copy I have seen. I ended up shelling out for an unused one, because all the used ones I saw were very heavily cancelled. I looked at your post in the HK thread, and I should be able to help you fill in a couple of the gaps. You should also post your KEVII sets, as I may be able to help you there, too. Feel free to PM me if interested.

Received 3 scans of classic Austria, from a member from Austria........I sent some scans of my early Austrians and he is filling the spaces. It is good that I have an inventory but Steiner pages have many errors and Scott is not the catalog for Austria. René

Dove into another small box of odds and ends this evening and found some more higher face Canada mint for postage but the piece de resistance was this 1980’s era stamp collecting starters kit. It made me chuckle. I wonder if Stampko still exists in some form?

Stamps, what are those? No time for stamps these days. therapy 4 days a week for 4 weeks. And yesterday they added another 4-5 weeks 1 day a week. Just doing the basics with my stamps keeping up with the new issues and checking auctions. Haven’t won any auctions in a while but I have my bid in for a few. Hopefully will win on a mint Scott #1. I have 2 used shown in the USA classic thread but would love a mint copy beings my collection is a mint collection. Happy stamping all.

In my last monthly order, I bought a large 64-page stockbook, meant to house my Central African Republic holdings, which are bursting out of their current home, which has only 32 pages. You've seen from previous posts that there have been many new acquisitions lately.
I decided in the new stock book to break it up by era. First republic: 1960-1977, Empire: 1977-79, Second Republic: 1979-ca. 2000, "Junky" modern stuff post 2000. With two interregnum sections for Republic stamps overprinted to say "Empire Centrafricain" and vice versa. And within each part, arrange in my usual geometric pattern. I've done the first two main sections already, and need to complete the rest.
Then the freed-up stockbook may be used for Guiné-Bissau, that will thus grow from 16 to 32 pages. It needs it pretty badly too. And again, split into colonial era, early independence, and recent mass production.
What will I do with the 16-page stockbook, you say? Haven't decided yet...
Oh, and somehow re-arrange my shelf space to find some room...

I finally finished mounting and scanning the Germany stamps I had received from the REL1948 giveaway. I ended up printing 82 Steiner pages (many complete sets( and used two packs of mounts in the process. Germany issued a lot of semi-postals.

It looks like the individual links on the pages are not working.

I suspect Stampko was one of those companies that ran adds in comics offering all kinds of things for sale by mail. I remember the 1000 stamp bags one could order in the 1960's.

I moved a bundle of covers lurking somewhere in the house onto my desk, so that I can file them away safely later.
That's it from me for today.
Perhaps I'll do something more worthwhile later this week, like update that Chatham Islands thread and type up another item or continue sorting through some GB stamps...
Ooh, do show. Which island? There are some interesting ones. Old stuff or modern? The most recent stuff can be hard to get, used in period on cover. Less common, I think.

Well, it's been slow going with my collections since Christmas. Lots of other family activities going on as well as other stuff. Went to a Rolling Stones (tribute gig) last night they were really good. The lead singer actually looked like Jagger & one of the guitarists looked even more like Ronnie Wood than he does!! I was 4 rows back from the stage & my hearing still needs to return to normal at the moment, (pardon). Any way back to the stamps. I purchased a single Q.V. 14 dots 1d lilac from Stanley Gibbons a couple of weeks ago which I was watching for some time. It was partially paid for by one of my Christmas presents. Been trying to fill some of the gaps in my collection (mainly Victorian items which seem to be getting more difficult to find these days). I also bought a few Machins for my specialist collection, from eBay. The gaps in the collection are gradually filling up, although the searches are taking a bit longer & the wallet contents sparser. Have a nice day.

I hope I'm not bursting your bubble or anything, but your 12o blue from Sweden is actually Scott #8, not #1. CV for Scott #1 (3sk blue green) is $5,000 USD. It's still a nice stamp to have, for sure, as it represents the same design as those very first issues. Anyway, although it may not be the best news, I thought you would want to know now rather than be disappointed later.

Philatelic Puttering....Greetings, stampers! I hope this post finds you all as well as you can be. We have a sunny day in So Cal today, which is a welcome change after all the rain and heavy cloud cover we have had over the last 7-10 days. This past week, I have been very busy with a work-related project. As time consuming as that has been, I needed a few mental health breaks from the project during the week, and I used those times to do some general organizing of my philatelic materials. By this, I mean files of articles and other records of stamp purchases, old album pages, and more. It's been great to get a handle on all of this stuff, which I had largely ignored since I unpacked it about a year ago. A consequence of organizing of my stamp files is that some items that weren't where they belonged have ended up on my desk. So, today I need to clear my desk and put everything away so that I can get back to the stamps. I also found some old album pages with hinged stamps on them that will need soaking. I think I will take a break from the office organizing to do some soaking while the kitchen table is available for the next couple of hours. Have a good weekend, everyone.... stay stampy!

Spring cleaning , or a weak attempt at shifting stuff.
Yesterday I completed my 80th and final page for the Exhibition in April. Done and set aside, My commemorative Lifeboats cover for the event is in the public domain and I am getting online orders. My 3 small one frame exhibits ( non competitive) to represent the club are also ready .
Big sigh of relief.
Now I have made 2 give aways of GB common stuff here for 48 hour inspection, and created a large rummage box of nearly 400 covers , cheap and nasty , to go on the host society desk at the Congress. After everyone has spent the big budget just a chance to rake through hopefully at 10p each for club funds.

Hey Kids, how's it going?
I've been really struggling over the last 2 years on how to put together (combine) several past family members stamp collections, especially the Pre 1930 World Wide collections that were in albums exposed to high humidity. The old albums were no longer usable so I've been removing and soaking stamps by country and placing them in glassine envelopes. Then I picked a few of my favorite countries and put those in Stockbooks, but that was a problem as I discovered more stamps and needed to rearrange them. Then I moved to Vario pages in 3 ring binders. I didn't like the feel of the Vario pages. My intention was to stay away from hinges and albums.
Most of the stamps are used, common, but collectable. I finally decided to buy used versions of Scotts International Stamp Albums Volumes I, II & III off eBay. I've started with US and will work my way through Volume I. Then onto the following volumes. The albums are practically new and in great condition, and to my surprise all 3 volumes had 1,000's of stamps in them which was a bonus I wasn't expecting. Not bad for $40 per album! Transferring the stamps into these albums will be a joy. I also purchased glassine pages to put in the albums as well. It will be a nice collection I can pass along to the next generation.

drmellow I too use Scott International albums for my world wide. I am up to 6 volumes which takes me to 1965. The major shortcoming is the classic era up to 1940 does not have room for all values and major varieties. In some cases I have added blank pages to reduce crowding but in most cases I just jam in the noted perforation and watermark varieties. Over the years I have added or created specialty albums for countries that a general world wide album could no longer house appropriately the volume of material I have accumulated. Have fun with your project.

It's been quite a stamp filled week, but not much time spent on my collection. Two meetups with the local club, including my first trip to the 'first meeting of the month' venue last night. I bought a fun cover at the auction which I'll scan and show here in a bit. They've asked me to be on the 'Events' committee so I'll see what that entails soon. First order of business is getting some exhibit pages written up for the show in April. Nothing as big as Vikingeck's displays, we're encouraging 1-2 page displays to get the members bringing something to the show. And the Regina club asked me to bump my annual presentation to February, so I better get moving on that one quickly! When I did sit down at my desk, I got back to sorting Chinese definitives. I'm complete up to 1950, when the Republic retreats to Taiwan and the People's Republic begins in earnest. Either the issues are getting simpler, I'm getting better at identification, or I don't have as many of the surcharges and overprints, but it's going faster each time. Getting my head around the Scott listings and all their flavours of 'Taiwan' took some real effort but it helped me understand the sequence of events, which is the real reason I'm digging into this period. So it's time well spent.

It was fun madbaker that we were both working and scratching our head a bit on China yesterday. The old Senior Statesman album I am going through had just the one full page of the early definitive stamps. The early Junk and Rice Reapers take time due to the 3 printings and perforation varieties. Then of course we have the overprints. Most countries I can scan a page like this in a few minutes, pick what I need and move on. I mulled over and was lost in this page for a few hours yesterday. The gaps show that I found a few I needed and pleasantly 2 were a bit better CV than what I normally find. It is not an area I would want to specialize in but I do enjoy going through old collections of the definitive stamps. One always finds something.
