So, do I gather then that you are planning to use Michel for identifying your German stamps, or are you still looking at other possibilities? Yes, I like the Luxembourg catalog they put out. Why not go to the source? After all, a German company would best know their own stamps!

And if you add Colnect then you have good sources. They list 776,503 Stamps world wide and have the most common catalog numbers on the stamps. As a bonus you can find trade partners here. But no prices on the stamps. I hadn't seen that site before. They have very detailed info on everything. It would be great, but that site involves a heckuva lot of clicking to see it

No WW can have all the images, aside from the issue of acquiring and imaging all the stamps plus the cost of publishing, the space needed would require a catalog set with some 25 - 50, 000 pages. For collectors who specialize in 1 or a few countries, catalogs that have most or all the images are readily available but generally in the local language. Some of these are not published yearly as many collectors want the information and not so much the CV's which rarely match between WW sets and specialized country versions.
Edifil Cuba
Norma Finland
Bolaffi Papal States/Vatican
The issue is of course translation which for many collectors can be a major hurdle.
If you have the means and contacts, the somewhat maligned pdf versions solve all these issues. Yes the physical catalog is nice to have. For travel, searching, magnifying, printing, copying and translating the text, it is difficult to beat the pdf. method. I have a "FEW" catalogs and they easily fit on a portable device. More companies would probably go this route but as Scotts found out in their 2009 pdf version, piracy is an issue
I have trialed online editions from Yvert, Scott, Michel and others and all of them are seriously lacking in most or all the points mentioned above as well as being generally unreliable and of poor image quality and often pricey. A few online WW catalogs like Colnect or Stampworld are viable solutions but not for realistic CVs in Stamp world's case and you still have to do a lot of searching. Their images are basically provided by contributors so quality varies. You can buy or find traders but most of the dealers that frequent Stampworld are asking for unreasonable amounts with no reference to condition and quality.
So no simple solution for the WW collector. However if a query arises, this and other forums can easily & accurately respond.
BTW Michel does publish a few catalogs in English and to save the freight and help make Mr Bezos a litter richer try Amazon.

Today I rambled on.....a mixture of everything and nothing !! Decided to do inventory of my Siam/Thailand stamps from the old Scott 40's Albums my late dad bought and refreshed an old thread. I wish I had a specific Siam/Thailand stamp cat.

I dug into that German stcokbook. I have to get going with it, as 400 or so more German stamps are on the way to their new home. I sorted through the post WWII definitives and sorted the ones before. Now to tackle all the commemoratives. There are also stamps from Leipzig, DDR, Bavaria, Saar, Upper Silesia, Baden Wurttemburg & Berlin to muddle through as well. Scott doesn't show the stamps in the lower 3 rows - not sure what they are. At least I can't find them. Dated cancels show 1949 & 1950...

These are Soviet Zone and early DDR issues. The "famous Germans" issue set was issued twice, first by the Soviet Zone in 1948 and then again by the DDR in 1953. There is a slight difference in colour and design between the two sets, but the starkest difference is in the watermarks, which are a four-point star pattern for the former and a postal horn with the letters DDR for the latter. If you have duplicates in there of the Soviet 25pf olive green, or the DDR 15pf. brown, 20 pf. wine-red, 25 pf. olive green or 84 pf. red-brown, can I call first dibs?

So that explains the Karl Marx stamp. I was wondering why (West) Germany would celebrate him on a stamp! They don't have DDR on them, so that threw me off. Thanks Xavier!

I do see a couple colour variations, but most I'd say are the Soviet versions. The 12pf & 60pf looks like one from the DDR. But there are no easily discernible watermarks on any of them. Not like the early Germans with them being so obvious!

In preparation for the German influx, I pulled out the definitive pages from the Steiner pages from 1951-2002. There are 19 pages that need a lot of work done to them before I judge them to be satisfactory for my collection. Additions will probably expand that too. I have my work cut out for me now!
EDIT: What I was planning would just take too much time! I'm just going to move everything to the middle of the page & print them out as is otherwise. This is using the top loading page protectors, with the ring holes outside of the page. I have LOTS of orange cardstock, so that will be the colour of the pages!
Another edit: there were a lot more than that. I am right proud of myself though, as I managed to mount the Empire stamps up to Hitler. Now I can clearly see what I need!

Looking for my (beautiful) clear stamp mounts, I came across a stack of large black Lighthouse mounts. They are around 40 mm's deep x 210 mm long. If firstfrog2013 wants them, as I know he does like the black mounts, he can have them! Just let me know, and I'll fire them off. Otherwise if he for some unknown reason does not want them, they are up for grabs. Let me know soon, froggie!

I spent some of yesterday creating some simple labels for my US mini-sheet album. I store these in clear protective sleeves with a black or other insert to make two sided. The labels are Avery removable address labels so prepare them using a template file then print.

Oh dear I think I am going to have to say curt words to the man behind the auction. The description said 4lb+ charity kiloware, damn liar, missed a one off didn't he, 14lb+ of machins. There are all sorts in the top inch and I did do a dig to the bottom and found the same. What am I going to do? What am I going to do with the leftovers? Perhaps a few volunteers would consider an equal share and pay for their own postage.

Back at the German definitives, on to the 1950's onwards. They are going up fast.
Also, I cancelled my eBay account if they are going to sell crap like that. Took the loss, I don't want to be downloading 100 gigs of unauthorized stuff.

Spent some time scanning covers received over the past few weeks and removed a few self-adhesives cut from various mailings. Just received my pre-rate change order of forever stamps from the USPS Stamp Fulfillment Services -- the rate changes go into effect on the 29th.

West Germany did, in fact, issue a stamp in 1968, for the 150th birthday of Karl Marx:

Like brightonpete, I’m also working on early Germany. In my case, it’s merging stamps from a largish packet and two different stock books. Tonight I spent an hour working on definitive sets from the 1950’s and 60’s. It’s fun to finally pull a set together and realize I’ve got a complete set. Or most often, 80% complete.

So if you are serious let me know the max weight you want and I can throw them in an envelope. Pictures will be taken when the camera battery is charged.
