He literally removes them from the book For example, if you want Sarawak you end up with part of another country page too. These are actual pages not copies so 100% legitimate. I have seen this seller or someone similar for years and never understood how he does it? Ex: 100 people want the US, France or GB so you have to buy 100 expensive catalogs 1 person wants Afars, Mongolia or Upper Silesia. So you're left with a LOT of unsold sections, so it doers not make economic sense. Anyway, smart idea to sell sections. Since he lives in the USA, it must be OK by Amos to sell portions?? Amazing!

I wonder if the seller has an arrangement with Amos Media to buy catalogues in bulk, at wholesale prices, or to get the leftovers as they transition from one year to the next. That's the possibility that occurs to me...

I do not know his business model. If he only wanted a few sections himself, he would be ahead selling what he did not use. The list for a 2018 is $155 but most discount supply places sell it around $100. I would guess the wholesale is around $75 to $80.
Let's say he sells countries for $4 so he would need to sell 25 from each catalogue to break even. From when I saw his 2018, he only had a few for each country so maybe he buys a limited number then waits until he has sold enough to get more. I am sure he would not buy 50 catalogues just because one country is hot selling country to get stuck with the rest.
I am glad he does it and could see collectors doing the same thing - pooling to get what they need. The books are not cheap.

...it seems hard to believe that this could work as a business model... I tallied his asking prices for just the A-B segments comprising the 2018 Volume 1 and the total was $241. The Amos Advantage price for that Volume is $99.99. It seems to me that there is plenty of room for him to make a profit. He had three of each segment that I checked available for sale.

Waiting for a back-of-book National album that I recently won at auction (the first time I've bid on a collection like this). I was mainly interested in the revenue pages (mostly blank) but there are a number of U.S. cut squares in the album so I'm looking forward to tapping the knowledge of members like Mike (coastalcollector) and Edith ( Lila Schatten ).

tapping the knowledge of members like Mike (coastalcollector) and Edith ( Lila Schatten ). Mike is definitely the person to ask, but I will help if I can! I haven't been up to much stamp-wise over the break, but the summer semester started yesterday. I am taking "Speech and Communication," and I am considering making my end-of-semester speech about the use of stamps as propaganda in the DDR. Any thoughts or research suggestions from the experts?

There are also examples of stamps leading to a "propaganda war" between East & West Germany, in which stamps were not accepted across the border - sometimes the letter was returned to sender, sometimes the stamp was defaced to block out the design and the letter was then delivered. All because one side or the other didn't like the story the stamp was attempting to tell. Ryan

A day off but it's hot in southern Thailand and the ceiling/floor fans are going full-tilt (no a/c here), so....
All of my "stamping" activities today are digital: I sorted more stamp scans into monthly folders for "Postmark Calendar" entries (very FEW from June, still); I went through folders looking for a stamp to illustrate my "A Stamp A Day" article marking the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (settling on Fiji's entry in the omnibus); I worked a bit on a planned overview article on "The Admirals" issues of Canada, Rhodesia, and New Zealand; and I did (very little) work on creating album pages of the British Post Office in Siam (Bangkok) "B" overprints on Straits Settlements -- specifically, including spaces for some of the shipping agents' chops and "odd" cancellations available (such as Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and others).
Whew! I need a drink now.. (in my case, that means freshly-squeeze mango or pineapple juice).

I spent much of last night and this morning undoing do-it-yourself conservation measures that a well-meaning (but cheap) collector had used on his modern postal stationery collection.
The back-of-book National album that I mentioned previously was accompanied by a binder containing Minkus pages with stamped envelope entires, postal cards and air letter sheets from the 1964-1978 period.
Initially the collector was using what appear to be Crystal mounts to protect the material but those ran out early on and he switched to plastic wrap that was tightly wrapped around the item and secured with scotch tape.
Over time, some of the more tightly wrapped material began to warp as the plastic shrunk around it. In other cases, the wrap didn't completely cover the material and portions of the tape adhered to the covers/cards as well as the plastic.
Fortunately, I was able to salvage the majority of the approximately 90 pieces that were "protected" in this manner. The crystal mounts haven't yet begun to impact their cargo so I have some time before I need to remove and remount them.

Steve, I have been purchasing old collections for some time now, and have intimate knowledge of the issues you describe. My personal headache is harvesting hinged mint (and sometimes used) stamps where the collector either stored the albums flat, or exposed them to humidity (sometimes both) resulting in "tack downs." Rescuing the "rescueable" without causing thins or other damage is a time consuming process; and especially frustrating when after several minutes of gently prodding, poking and prying, you slip and rip the stamp in two!

Whew! I need a drink now.. (in my case, that means freshly-squeeze mango or pineapple juice). With no a/c, how do you handle the "humidity vs. stamps with gum" issue? The only time it's been a real problem has been during the monsoons because I have to stop ordering mint stamps during the rainy season. The likelihood of incoming envelopes getting wet is pretty high (but in 12 years, have only had three stamps damaged in this way -- one from Azerbaijan and two from La Agüera that I still haven't managed to replace). My stamps in stockbooks (made by a Thai company) and Vario pages have been unaffected. I do check periodically but so far none have ever adhered to the pages (knock on wood). A few years ago, I bought a worldwide collection mounted in a Scott Modern album -- mostly used, but scattered unused. I began removing them from the album pages country by country, scanning and cataloging as I went. But by the time I got to the various French colonies (mostly unused), many had affixed themselves to the pages. I managed to remove some with my tongs, sliced one or two, and ended up having to remove the pages they were stuck on and soak them. <<Sigh>> but at least there was nothing of great value. Foxing has never been a problem... It's working with the stamps -- hinging or mounting that is the problem. I cannot do this with the fans on or, well -- the stamps would be everywhere. It doesn't take long before the the sweat on my brow begins beading up and I worry about it dripping down my nose onto the stamps. So, I cannot so this for long periods of time.... Unfortunately, air-conditioned homes, apartments, guesthouses, and the like are VERY rare in the area where I live. My home is fairly nice; the nearest rental with air-con is in a much worse location, smaller and monthly rent is nearly 4 times what I'm paying now. I'm a teacher so I don't have the option to move. I've been lucky thus far (and have lived in the tropics for more than 12 years). I worry that, eventually, I'll succumb to a more expensive living arrangement to preserve my stamps (of course, that will mean being able to purchase much less).

Mark, sounds like you have things well in hand! As a former teacher (middle school) I can attest to the struggle to live on teacher wages. The powers that be will never understand that the education of our youth is the key to our future, and by not paying a living wage to teachers, you short change the kids as only the most dedicated souls (such as yourself) will remain in the system. As much as I loved teaching, I realized I had to move on when I was forced by circumstances to maintain two part-time jobs to make ends meet.
Keep on fighting the good fight! I respect and appreciate your dedication.

I have been working on my USA collection. I could swear it has only been a few weeks since I last brought everything up to date, but according to purchase invoices, it has been well over a year! Guess I have been too busy with giveaways. No fear, however, since I am retired, I have ample time for both endeavors!

I am still in Germany, starting the final week of my trip. Four weeks is a long time to be away from home, and I am looking forward to going back next Tuesday.
Since this is such a long trip, I decided to bring some stamps with me to work on when I needed a break from my consulting projects. I brought a pile of stamps from an old collection that was given to me.
I have been soaking those, as many were either stuck together or stuck down to an album page. I have now soaked a few batches and dried the stamps flat. These have been organized into a stock book for transporting back home.
I have also been working on my latest TSF Newsletter article, but it is not finished. I need to get going on that.

What I collect: GB Victoria to Queen Elizabeth pre-decimal and Falkland Islands
|
Post by tregeor on Jul 10, 2017 14:30:06 GMT
I started collecting (mainly) GB from Victoria up to Queen Elizabeth (pre-decimal) quite recently. Unfortunately, a second stroke made it a frustrating time trying to write up my own album pages and cutting the hagners to size etc so I've finally bought two Windsor Albums with the stamp mounts already in place with catalogue numbers too. All I've got to do is slip the stamps in the spaces. I have stuff that doesn't have an 'allocated' place eg I've got stamps on envelopes and blocks of 4 but only one space for a stamp in the new album but on the whole I'm very happy with my two new albums (only got them a few weeks ago) as they were in a sale on the Gibbons website.
So that's what I've been stamping and am looking forward to (hopefully if my bid's been successful) getting some Queen Victoria from the recent UPA auction that ends in a couple of days.

One of my favorite things to receive in the mail is an envelope filled with new stamps won on auction, purchased on approval or traded with another collector. So, I had about 5 of those envelopes and processed them all within about an hour. I now have my topical binder set up with Vario pages of different formats and also have tabs separating out my favorite topical categories. So now it's easier and faster to sort stamps into the various topical categories and then divert the rest to what I have come to regard as my "holding" stock book, where stamps will stay until they get mounted in either my Mystic USA album, my Steiner worldwide pages or displayed in Vario pages if they're MNH or rare items. I also spent a little time reading the user's manual for my new stamp inventory software, StampMate. A very fulfilling philatelic session!

In addition to replacing images of deceased and former members that have been blocked by Photobucket in the Postmark Calendar thread and others, I'm trying to get our own image host established so we will no longer be at the mercy of corporate greed.
With luck, I'll be able to make it available as soon as testing has been completed.
It won't be as simple as the Simple Image Upload that was recently added to the forum (unless one of you knows how to create plugins for ProBoards), but it will be functional and, most importantly, it will be ours.
It seems that every day more member images are being blocked so please be patient with what will likely be a lengthy restoration process to get all of those replaced and on the new image host.
Lastly, do not/not alter or delete your Photobucket account as the images are still recoverable!!!

Hi there Anping ,
I've been using UPA for 2 or 3 years and bid on items in each of their auctions. My experience has been very good as I find them honest and reliable. If an item you are interested in is not illustrated in their catalogue you e-mail them and they'll send a scan.
If an item hasn't sold in their auction it remains in the coming lists but with a price reduction and this continues until it is sold. It is the only auction site I use on a regular basis. Hope this helps you

Hi there Anping , My experience has been very good as I find them honest and reliable. Well between you and me, I have used them just the once. But I was interested in another opinion. I did benefit from a 'first time buyer' (£55) discount plus a 20% reduction on a relisted item; plus the standard no buyer fee; plus zero postage & handling fee. So I did rather well. Dealing with them by email is impressive as they are very responsive. But for my own collecting interest, I do find their estimates somewhat high and some of the quality of the material a little below my expectations for the price listed. Occasionally, their descriptions are confusing and images rather small. But I guess this is the price you pay for postal auctions, where lots can't be examined personally. The online catalogue feature is rather good. Looking at comments on other forums, the overall feedback is very good. Thanks for responding.
