My Newfoundland collection is still fledgling, but this remains one of my favorite stamps in my Canada and Provinces collection. It is also the first Newfoundland stamp I acquired. I saw it on display at the first stamp show I ever went to and had to have it, at the time I didn't even know Newfoundland issues their own postage. Of course after having one Newfie stamp I had to have the rest... so I am still working on that! Here's Newfoundland #170 from the re-engraved pictorial issue of 1929. Celebrating the first non-stop transatlantic flight.

One of my favourite Newfoundland sets. The quality of production for these issues is excellent.

Those airmails are great looking stamps. I have always liked the 50-cent especially. Thanks for posting them!

The Newfie dog, Unitrade No. 58 is my favorite (for today anyway ). Does anyone know if this is the first stamp ever issued with a dog on it? It was issued in 1894.

It has to be the running for the first stamp with a dog on it. It's still the era where I think the vast majority of stamps featured monarchs and heads of state. The Newfoundland Dog stamps are high on my list of favorites, but just not quite enough to top the Vimy.

One of my favorites: And then I might get some static on this one, but I can't help myself: One of the great classic-era airmails, even if it went unissued. The 'Wayzata' airmail. And since I get three, then this one is pretty good, too:

Nice scan on the 2c stamp, cjd. I`ve noticed that on some scans the shading lines blend together but you have it right. Perfect for a virtual collection.

Below reflects the sum total of my Newfoundland holdings. Between the two, the map issue is my favorite, irrespective of its faults -- I believe it is the 1928 issue and not a re-engraved 1929 and would welcome expert views. Unfortunately, the darkening near the top of the stamp was the result of someone having used ashesive tape as a hinge. The centering on the KGVI is quite nice and I'm wondering if this was the norm for the issue.

Yes, your 1c is the 1928. When re-engraved, the notations for Capes Bauld and Norman were reversed.

The 2-cent King George is available in two printings as well. #245 is from the Royal Family Issue and is perf 13.5 and watermarked. 245 was issued May 12 1938. #254 comes from re-issue 'Waterlow' printings from 1941-1944. 254 is perf 12.5 and also watermarked.
Both issues, I think, are pretty well centred on the majority of copies. Both are pretty common stamps so I have seen a number of copies of each, and I can't think of one that was poorly centred.

One of the great classic-era airmails, even if it went unissued. The 'Wayzata' airmail. And the Wayzata; Where does it belong? Unitrade has a mere footnote, Scott has a footnote with an image, but neither catalogue gives it a number. Boggs does have a page about the stamp in The Postage Stamps and Postal History of Newfoundland telling a brief account of the Aerial World Tours, Inc. story and the intended use as a semi-official airmail label. It's definitely an attractive stamp. My copy is in the back-of-book section of my Newfoundland collection right after the airmails. Even though it was never issued and never given a number it is just too pretty not to have in my collection.

I wonder if you guys with Newfoundland collections or knowledge in the area could help me out with some identifications of early Imperforates? Although I collect WW, and have a general knowledge- with Newfoundland , it is only an inch deep. I realize one needs to look at the paper, the color, and perhaps even plating to positively identify the stamps. And, one needs to rule out forgeries. Although I have made some preliminary assumptions about the stamps, I will keep my opinions to myself for the moment. So these will be presented as unknowns. Unknown #1 (1 Pence)

My favourite Newfie stamp I don't have yet, unfortunately. It's the #27 Prince Albert. I think it's a terrific portrait, very dignified. My fave that I do have is this 1910 1ยข King James I from the Guy Issue. It's my favourite because of the defect that makes the upper case K in King look like a lower case h. The images above show it on the right next to a 'normal' issue.

Sorry jkjblue, I don't have any of the early imperforates in my collection yet, so I have no basis for colour comparison. I would have to see a few of the various 1d issues side by side to try and sort them into colour groups. I would probably start by measuring the printed area on the stamps. The wet printed (Unitrade 15A,16) would be a little smaller in one dimension that the dry printed Unitrade 1.
Hey jamesw is that variety in the Unitrade catalogue? I can't seem to spot it. Definitely an interesting variety!

Well thanks therealwesty. I was trying to determine the difference between brown violet with mesh paper (Scott 1), and violet brown with wove paper, no mesh ( Scott 15A).

Hi Realwesty. No, His Majesty isn't listed as an error in Unitrade. At the time I found the stamp I wrote to the British North America Philatelic Society and received this answer from Jean-Claude Vasseur.
"The "Guy Issue" was lithographed in 1910 under supervision of Whitehead & Morris in London. The process was well known to give quality (color & details) results... but suffering of inconsistancy in the transferring process from the stone to the plate such that numerous "errors" do exist on this issue. Even if only three "errors" are listed, there is a large number of defective stamps (50%?) more or less dramatic!
As far as I know, the full plating of this stamp has been made but I am unable to remind who did it (sorry).
Your example can be classified as appealing and deserves certainly attention as the three listed "errors". Meanwhile, for the reasons stated above, do not expect a "premium" for this beautiful stamp."
Perhaps I should send the image to Unitrade and see what they say.
BTW, lovely Queen Vic, jkjblue.

Here's a scan of 1870 Scott 33 3c vermilion "Queen Victoria" It looks mint, but I think it is actually used. It's a very nice stamp...what makes you think that is used?

Hi Perf 14
I looked at it again,as and the gray stain along the top border had me thinking it was used. But it does have gum, and now I think it unused- although a bit flawed. ;-)

Hi jkjblue I tend to agree with you, but the flaw is minor IMO and it's still a very nice stamp for that era.

Newfoundland has always been one of my favorites. I don't think many would disagree that they consistanly produced some of the most beautiful stamps ever printed. Unfortunately many people agree and they generally bring a high percentage of catalog which is why I have not added anything in a long while. Picking a favorite would be very difficult but I have always been quite fond of the Black 60 cent Columbus shown on the page below. I rescanned this page to show but need to rescan the rest to show better images. When I started my site project, web storage space was limited and so were the size of the images. Now that space is not a problem I need to rescan everything that is still in the smaller scale.

Just goes to show you how easily influenced I am. I said above that my favourite was the Prince Albert #27. Reading that again I suddenly thought to myself, I should have one! So I went online and found this one. Sellers image. Couple of stubby perfs, but nicely centred. Now I'm happy.

Original fish design die proof : The final design required the vignette to fit in a smaller space, so the tail was redrawn "flipped" (stamp not mine)

His Highness is in the house. Prince Albert arrived today. His wife Queen Victoria described him as 'beautiful'. I think she may have been right!
