Nice, but not in the same family Jeff, Pictorial postmarks differ from "Slogan" cancels, and Cachets. Pictorial are generally circular and hand struck. Your PDF's were still useful Finland Napapiiri = "Arctic Circle"

Let me provide a brief summation of the information contained in Pub 186 (pages 10-15 provide the history, the front matter tells you how to apply for a pictorial postmark) with an example of an early U.S. pictorial postmark: A few more examples:

Thanks for expanding that Steve, I gotta tell you, the lines are still grey around the edges of "Pictorials" I am still having trouble getting a clear picture in my head what constitutes a particular forme. The US seem to bend the edges. Were the CORK cancels pictorial? I was thinking the advertising vignette had to be in the circle, but the US FDC postmarks are not. Australia Referenced as "PICTORMARKS" www.ozpictormarks.com/OzPictorMarks.htmlSeems these are faked on occaisions as well Note: Difference between Pictorial Postmark and Privately produced cachet

Australia Referenced as "PICTORMARKS" www.ozpictormarks.com/OzPictorMarks.htmlSeems these are faked on occaisions as well Note: Difference between Pictorial Postmark and Privately produced cachet Rod, As I read the definitions in the USPS Publication (shown in the below image), the corks are considered pictorial markings to cancel stamps and were not postmarks (i.e., used to indicate the Post Office of origin and date and time of mailing). Having the pictorial inside or outside the CDS doesn't seem to matter, at least to the USPS, as long as it is part of the postmark (ref: your 1981 Oslo example has no circle but meets the criteria of a postmark). As you've already mentioned, these definitions reflect the interpretation of the USPS and they may differ from those of other postal administrations or philatelic entities. I believe the privately produced cachets are exactly that, insofar as they don't meet the "characteristics" of a postmark ( US Stamp Society definition follows).

Who doesn't love Disney?
This first day pictorial postmark is on the multicolored 37c Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio stamp, designed by David Pacheco, issued on June 23, 2004 (Scott 3868).
The self-adhesive stamp is one of a set of four stamps serpentine die cut 10.5x10.75 from The Art of Disney: Friendship issue.

How do we tie Anaheim to Disney ? That is correct, the 3rd Pan Am Games were officially opened in a ceremony in Chicago's Soldier Field over which President Eisenhower officiated. Disneyland Park is located in Anaheim, California.

National Postal Museum. London Victoria Cross Exhibition 1981 wiki Mollweide map projection It sacrifices accuracy of angle and shape in favor of accurate proportions in area. It is used primarily where accurate representation of area takes precedence over shape, for instance small maps depicting global distributions. The projection was first published by mathematician and astronomer Karl (or Carl) Brandan Mollweide (1774 – 1825) of Leipzig in 1805. It was popularized by Jacques Babinet in 1857, giving it the name homalographic projection. The variation homolographic arose from frequent nineteenth century usage in star atlases.

Austria 1982 Can anyone assist with translation? All I have is Junior world ski championships. The stamps have a relationship with Murau, I assume, any other philatelic relevance? [Image link broken]

I got sidetracked by the "BSV" part - German speakers love acronyms, it's a handy way of dealing with all those compound words, and sport-related stuff often has something to do with a sport club or "Sportverein". So, I was expecting some sort of sport club that could be abbreviated BSV. It turns out that BSV stands for "stamp collector club". The Donau is the Danube River. Tauschen is trading or swapping, and it sounds like this club names its local branches as "trading spots". Murau's branch is specifically a youth club, which I suppose had a stamp exhibition in conjunction with the ski event. www.bsvdonau.bplaced.net/murau.htmlRyan
