Nice, quite few fine postmarks in your display, thanks for sharing zipper. So cool to see others interested in these postmarks. I've been actively collecting different PC and GC numeral postmarks along with Paris Stars and the ambulant postmarks for a few years. There are about 10.000 different of these all together, so finding them all seems impossible. However my goal is only to have fun while trying to find as many as possible, and I'm currently around 600 readable and different. In my mind the combination of these beautiful, classical iconic stamp designs and the characteristic postmarks is simply unresistable, can't understand why this is not a more popular collecting area. But it's ok, makes them more available to us that do

sherro, if you take a look on the “What’s in your Library?” thread, you will see that zipper posted an image of the cover of a reference book for the French numeral postmarks, right after your recent post there.

Thanks khj, that site is wonderful and has been my main reference, but never actually tried it with Google translate. For others getting interested in French postmarks THIS SITE gives a very useful introduction

On the subject of French postmarks. There is one kind of reference I've been looking for - unsuccessfully so far. Would really like to find an overview of scarcity factors for the different PC/GC postmarks/offices. The best I've found so far is THIS SITE - which is useful - however it only allows to get an indication of one single post office at a time. With 10.000 different postmarks that gets awkward to use in the long run, and is depending on internet availability. I was hoping there exists some kind of catalog or complete database listing this kind of info for all post offices in one document. Hope that makes sense. Anybody aware of anything like that? zipper - May I ask if your reference is giving any indication of scarcity? Any help appreciated

No rarity factor. Sorry.
I recently bought a binder that has homemade pages of small and large numeral cancels by city. Not all cities are included, and many stamps have been removed. Thought it would be fun to complete it, so I bought the catalog of France Numeral Postmarks.

Ok, thanks zipper, no worries That album of yours sounds most interesting. I have never seen any other such French postmark collection, would be cool to have a look For now my postmarks are simply organised on Vario pages with hand-written tags for each town/city. Planning to make custom made pages to accommodate every different PC/GC/Paris Star etc. Can share the result once I get there. Not enough time...

The reference is still available on Amazon. I can buy it and send it on at cost but I don't know how much the book weighs so the postage cost can't be accurately calculated. A 13 ounce package sent first class international from Northern Virginia to Alberta would be $16. That same weight/service to Norway would cost $23.50. There may be cheaper shipping option beside USPS but that would require further research on my part.

zipper - thanks for showing that sample page, that's a nice piece of hand craft! Simply love these kind of old hand made pages. I noted the creator used one page for only two post offices - looks awesome! I guess the album could then potentially get very thick if attempting to cover all the different GC postmarks

tomiseksj - thank you very much for that helpful offer I really need to consider this. zipper - In order to consider the investment for this postmark guide, would you mind to make scan for a sample page(s) of the contents? Wondering if it is worthwhile or if most of the information is readily available at the marcophilie site or in Ceres/Maury already. A little peek of the contents would be highly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for sharing those scans zipper. It's a very nice book, congratulations on your acquisition. It seems to me the information in there is more or less available elsewhere, so with the shipping being both complicated and expensive I'll manage without.

I've been working on modifying my 'Postmark Database'. My brother barbu came up with the idea of making custom made pages for postmarks (in addition to ongoing project for custom made pages for WW stamps until 1940). Good idea, but takes some effort to create the software. I finally got the database adjusted, so the list of place/town names and related info in the database can be selected as desired to generate printable album pages. Did a test on album pages for France numeral postmarks today, here's the first page: I found it necessary to make the album pages as compact as possible. The database has 4393 PC postmarks for mainland France, and it generated no less than 90 pages to house them all - will need a separate Lighthouse Classic Grande album only for those postmarks And then there are another ca 6000 different GC postmarks from France - another album...and on top of that endless CDS postmarks of France... No end to the fun when collecting postmarks! Can't wait to start filling the pages with those marvelous classic French stamps and iconic lozenge postmarks.

The French 'PC' postmarks - 'Small numerals in lozenges' - is a fascinating area to collect. Follow THIS LINK to see a list. These postmarks were also used in Algeria on French stamps, before separate Algerian stamps were issued. With my modified database (ref previous post) it's done in a wink to create album pages for these 'Forerunners' as well. Quite handy for a postmark-lunatic like myself and barbu Here's how the different Algerian Forerunner postmarks will be housed (page 1 of 2) As most know, France issued stamps in the Levant, overprinted on those of mainland France. Prior to those overprints, the Ceres and Napoleon stamps of France were used abroad. Such forerunners for the different French Post Offices in the Levant are identified by PC postmarks with numerals as on the album page below: The French 'PC' postmarks were later found to have too small figures, so they were replaced with a new series of postmarks - 'GC' (Grande chiffres) - Large numerals in lozenges. Use THIS LINK to see a list. There are about 5500 different of them, so my next project is to create pages for these as well. Anyone else collecting French stamps used abroad / forerunners?

Excellent work! I'm impressed. Thanks for the kudos, zipper - much appreciated From your previous post I understand you have a liking for these postmarks as well Let me know if interested in dedicating a separate album, and I can forward you the complete PDF for the PC postmarks. Jon

Thank you, but for now I'm going to stick with the pages I just bought. I'm just beginning and am still learning. Perhaps when I know what I'm doing I'll take you up on your generous offer. Right now they'd be wasted on me.

....and hope for reincarnation to ever getting organized all the lovely cancellations of the world!! Ha ha ha - Indeed - even multiple incarnations - not ready for Nirvana quite yet Well, here's to all of those who have been contributing to this thread: zipper , blaamand , barbu , khj , sherro , renden , tomiseksj , @falshung , and anyone else whom I have forgotten.... I couldn't stand it any longer! I'm living here in France, and at least in theory, I should have better access to this material than just about anyone on TSF, so when Michael ( Londonbus1 ) was here, we found our way to the market, and I bought some stuff. Here's the first one: Cover in its entirety, perhaps a little worse for wear.... Here is a close-up of the stamp and its postmark. According to the dealer, this large numeral 2240 is from Marseille, which is relatively common, perhaps, but he said that the small "E" is what makes this cancellation something special. He told me that this is a relatively rare postmark from a small post office in Marseille. If Zipper or Nelson or Jon or anyone else out there with more knowledge of this kind of material can tell me more about this, I would appreciate it. I just want to thank all of you whom I have tagged in this post for inspiring me to acquire this piece. And I also want to thank Xavier ( hrdoktorx), who joined me for lunch "just" to talk stamps today. All of you gave me the motivation to get this posted, so thanks all!

Beryllium Guy - That's a marvelous cover, congratulations! Even better that zipper 's thread inspired you into the abyss of French postmarks - you'll get hooked soon enough The 2240E was postmarked in a Marseille sub-office in "Le Chapitre". According to WIKIPEDIA LINK the population is today at 'only' 7000, as compared to Marseille's huge population. I guess postmarks from places with 7000 inhabitants (today) does not necesarrily make them scarce, but maybe this particular postmark was used for a limited time? I do not know. According to THIS SITE the 2240E has no scarcity factor (=1), however I find that strange. As an example I must have had about 30 or more GC postmarks from Marseille (2240), but none of them were 2240E, so obviously the 2240E should have a different scarcity factor than Marseille, which is also noted down with factor 1. Wish I had access to a better - and complete - reference for scarcity factors, but I don' - or a reference with info on timespan of usage. Maybe someone else can help? Hope you find more nice stuff on that market, Chris! Jon
