I am going to create this thread because I seem to always have them as I'm sure others will as well. Does anyone know the "code" for these city cancels?? Or possibly a online resource to look it up myself??

O.K. another question this info is for Montreal P.O. Did other post offices also use this letter code for their P.O. or was this Montreal specific??What other P.O. used these code and do they also have a "key"Is there any of these letters a bit less used than others?? See lots of questions I must be the curious kind.

Thought I'd post this may not be best scan.I am a bit of a block (used) nut and always look for listed varieties. When I saw this I was amazed spires either touch the oval or fall short, well this one goes THROUGH the oval.

Okay, here's another no evidence of other re-entry but look at top of the D.It extends to the left WAY beyond normal. How did that happen???

The spire on the 10-cent is pretty nice! I wonder if it was an engravers slip made during a plate touch-up. I just had a look at seven copies between my collection and my duplicates book and the spires are all pretty uniform across my small sample size.
The lettering in 'CANADA' on the 50-cent Parliament Buildings stamp is in a very thick/bold type. Are you sure the postmark isn't just obscuring the image? It's hard to tell due to the colour of the stamp and cancel. It looks to me like there is a character in the cancel that's partially covering the left side of the D and making it look weird.

under strong optics still looks like mistyped "D' just another whatever stamp.I always say that's what makes a unique collection, all the little weird stuff we find.

I had a look at Hans Reiche's book on Canadian constant plate varieties and this one is not mentioned. It doesn't look like the 10c Library stamp has been extensively studied, though - the only listing in his book is for the stamp with the short spire (four different plate locations in total), whereas many other stamps have more than 20 listings for plate varieties. The 20c Niagara Falls definitive from 1935 has 46 different varieties listed! (All with only an 8% premium over normal catalogue value, though, nothing of value.) Ryan

The odd D in your 50c stamp is also not listed in Reiche's book, although he does have 17 listings for various flyspecks and one re-entry.

Goes to show how crazy you can get with varieties.I was on a kick for couple years when I had reached that point where nothing I was missing was in budget.Myself plate varieties are of more interest than tagging stuff.

So here's an interesting postmark placement, that makes a common stamp interesting enough to be a keeper.

I'm pretty sure I saw the topic of a blue 1 cent Admiral come up on a discussion board somewhere, but I can't find it. It will be either a colour changeling (put some of those low value floral definitives from the late 1970s in a windowsill that gets lots of sun, and in a couple of weeks you'll have all kinds of oddball colours) or it has been soaked in a chemical that ate the yellow out of the ink!

With respect Froggie, unless you explain your query, non Canadian collectors cannot guess what you are thinking. Educate us.

Are you talking about the BLUE 1 cent admiral?

Rod, he is talking about the 1¢ blue admiral at the top right. The admiral wasn't printed in blue, but was in yellow and green. There was a blue green, but the blue in the image is definitely leaning toward cyan, which leads me to agree with Ryan, that it is a changeling. Leave most printed matter in the sun long enough end eventually just the cyan will be left.

I recall a Queen Vic of Great Britain that changes to Blue (and a very clear Blue) as a colour changeling. I have a Cyprus Queen Vic opt stamp, that has been in the light, and the colour has disappeared completely leaving a white stamp with CYPRUS in black opt lettering.

I'm slobbering over the war tax stamp.it's very striking.I found a custom duty stamp in the last revenue lot, that I shared with you guys that was also a changeling same thing green to blue.I know there are the strict collectors that will only collect what the P.O. produced but then I also save the cindys.Where do YOU draw the line?? If finding only the numbers listed in a catalog is what your into that's great.ME ? .....I have a unique collection all my own that includes whatever strikes my eye.

O.k. still pouring over this lot.I found three pages of NFLD mostly used but all in all nice surprises,Most of these Cv$ of $1-$10 doesn't take long to add up to nice addition.when I was adding to my newfies I bought mint copies and as you know I like a used copy of each as well.still working on my little list final tally will be quite large return for the dollars spent.

I know there are the strict collectors that will only collect what the P.O. produced but then I also save the cindys.Where do YOU draw the line?? I collect everything (almost) that's listed in one of my catalogues, so I'm always looking for more catalogues with more detailed listings. A while back I bought about a dozen flyspecking catalogues for Austrian definitives. Yay flyspecks! Ryan
