I'm slobbering over the war tax stamp.it's very striking.I found a custom duty stamp in the last revenue lot, that I shared with you guys that was also a changeling same thing green to blue.I know there are the strict collectors that will only collect what the P.O. produced but then I also save the cindys.Where do YOU draw the line?? If finding only the numbers listed in a catalog is what your into that's great.ME ? .....I have a unique collection all my own that includes whatever strikes my eye. I don't draw a line, I'll collect anything. I have a buying budget, which I save towards the scarcer material, if I get outbid, which is often, the money goes back into the pot, and I'll buy cheap little floorsweeping lots, for enjoyment, cut squares, worldwide etc which I limit to about $5. Like Ryan, literature always is a constant temptation, but prices can blow the budget easily.

I have a tally so far on what I have added to my stuff from this large lot.The CV$ of what has been mounted so far is $712 I have not done small queens or the admiral issues and I still have some more lots set aside for possible sale.I have also given away quite a bit as well.In sales so far I have netted $20 and I paid $55 for this bunch including shipping.Wish I could find one every week like this.

Colour changelings. (from around the internet) The NZ and US images are my own stamps. [image omitted to save space] I have also seen the #104 1¢ green Admiral in the same shade of blue as that War Tax issue. It is in a friends collection so I don't have access to scan it. Must have been a small batch of die that changed colour because as far as I can tell they aren't that common. Frog also sent me a #24 2¢ large queen, supposed to be green, that is blue. When I took the 2¢ queen to a dealer I have known for a while he immediately started comparing it to the 12.5¢ blues. I had to point out to him that it was the 2¢ value. He wasn't sure what to make of it and had never seen a 2¢ that colour before. However, another dealer I have shown it too was pretty confident it was a changeling. I will continue to show the stamp around and gather some more opinions on it. Whether it's valuable or not is moot to me, it has certainly become an interesting conversation piece in my small circle of collectors.

Glad your having fun with it.I am of same opinion MY collection is for me to enjoy. It may not be a great quality collection but it's for MY enjoyment.I take criticism lightly because some are of different mind set as is their right. It still doesn't make them right just different.

Has anyone had luck with ez-perf?/ I downloaded demo and couldn't get it to take any images.not going to spend money on software that doesn't work or is too hard to use.My old eyes are failing, reading a perf gauge only lasts for one or two stamps at a time, now.

I have not purchased my copy as yet, Froggie. I had a free copy when part of the testing, and found it reasonably easy to use, albeit I was scanning at 600dpi I believe it has been upgraded since then. Check youtube

After reading Linn's review it seems over my head.If I have to adjust images and co-ordinate scanner to scale I will never learn to use it.they make it sound so easy but that's just salsmanship.I can't even imagine trying to re-adjust scans in photo shop just to measure perfs.

Anyone know why Canadian coils and booklet singles are seemingly so over valued in comparison to straight definetives?

My suspicion is that the major influence is the number produced, relative to the 4-sided perf counterpart.
I did a quick Google search for numbers produced to see if this was the case but was unable to find any sources.

Although it's been couple decades since I played with modern U.S. seems I remember most were priced equally with regular issues.Yes??Was the difference large U.S. companies used the coil rolls while Canadian counter parts used mainly sheets??

A problem with Unitrade 111. Does anyone know what exactly a"redrawn spandrel" may look like???If I'm looking at it correctly the lines were strengthened and appear heavier in the upper right area?? Never mind SEE WANTED more dead than alive thread.

Can we see a picture of the stamp? If the margins aren't big enough no one will touch it. Also serious collectors will probably go for the pair to confirm the authenticity of an item but for $4 it sounds like a steal

Frog, here's what you are looking for in 111 with the redrawn spandrel. This example is from #112 the 5¢ purple, though it is exactly the same thing you are looking for on #11 the 5¢ blue. The vertical line has been added to the edge of the spandrel, kind of closes off the horizontal lines. Hope the scan does it justice.

Another quick question or more accurately rant why do they skip catalog numbers?I site Unitrade #121 for example.you would think 121 would follow 120 but NO..it's 122.I can understand maybe reserving a number in newer issues especially definitive issues but you would think the earlier numbers would have been straightened out long ago.I seriously believe a new wave, computer savvy editor could make a killing re-vamping the reference materials most used by the collecting community. If a vastly superior catalog appeared on market wouldn't you want/have to have it?

Addressing the question, not the rant Catalogue editors have an extremely difficult task, to offer you, the collector, a suitable hiearchy of identification from a source, that quite often, didn't know what they were doing themselves especially in the distant past. Once a number is allocated, it become lingua franca amongst collectors, if the publishers changed the numbering, there would be hell to play. My pet irritation, is when catalogue "describers" choose to become the authority when describing a stamp changing the name of (in general) flora and fauna, from that which adorns the stamp which aids identification, and should be the prime focus of a catalogue. Overall, I reckon catalogue producers do a bang up job, and are to be congratulated.

Catalogs have always used different numbers for same item a Stanley Gibbons number,Scott,Unitrade,Darnell, and Holmes numbers are good examples.I'm sure there are others but these I am familiar with.Would not a NEW catalog with GOOD information and Better descriptions/pictures become an also respected source even if numbers were a bit different?I was a firm believer Scott was THE authority but have learned that that is not really the case. Many varieties are simply ignored leaving the collector uninformed.Yet Scott numbers have prevailed.WHY

Things are being discovered constantly. Different numbering systems begin with different companies promoting and selling their work Each company decides what their numbering hiearchy shall cover. Scott numbers have prevailed because number of users employing the catalog worldwide, ease of use (great font), pointers to other stamps in the series eg "See numbers ...etc etc" Great catalogue handling format (try and use a doorstep Gibbons on a middle sized desk) A lot of thought and experience has gone into Scott, Gibbons on the other hand is a rag tag jumble of patched together countries. Gibbons saving grace is their authority with Commonwealth countries, and the specialists that have spent time in this area. Any catalogue really, is there to assist collectors to generally place issues in some semblance of order, and offer some gradient pricing. It is up to the collector to diverge and specialise as they see fit.

Okay looking for support here.I have been seriously considering rearranging ALL my Canada in the order of their release.I have already bucked the norm by including cindys and back of the book in this format, but my thinking now is to go one step further and include all the Van Damn issues as well.I have thought on this awhile now and believe it makes sense to put everything in order. My thoughts today is to include for the sake of completeness postal stationery as well.I know you'll probably say do it my way but a honest opinion if this makes sense to you would be good. just what I need another project....

Anyone have idea of a #18 with perfs 12 X 12.25 ?? That perf is not listed but even my old eyes are positive that's what it measures.I believe someone else mentioned finding odd perfs in cents issues before. I know myself I have #17 in compound perfs both directions which I've never found the answer for.

Can anyone post a link for early pre-cancel types? Not an area I've studied before but the learning process continues.I have quite a few small queen pre cancels and they are different types, now I'd like to classify them by type.Another universe in the stamp galaxy.

Yes, the 12 1/2c stamp as well as the other stamps of the First Cents Issue occurs with the 12 x 12.25 perforation. I find it to be scarcer than the other perforations found on this issue. Perforations vary from 11.7 to 12.25 for these early perforating machines.

I am going to create this thread because I seem to always have them as I'm sure others will as well. Does anyone know the "code" for these city cancels?? Or possibly a online resource to look it up myself?? These are all from Montreal Post Offices. I just have them listed in the Lacelle book on Fancy Cancels. But you can look these up in BNAPS Topics Dec 61 pg 306, Sept 88 pg 15, etc 1. B - University St PO 2. C - St Catherines St East PO 3. D - Center St PO 4. E - St Lawrence Main PO 5. F = Notre Dame West (or Pine Ave West) PO 6. G - Pine Ave West PO 7. H - St Catherines St West PO 8. A, I and J - Main PO
