Austria Offices in the Turkish Empire Levant Possible SEAPOST postmark. Sc #9 3 soldi (CV $30 for a nice one) Postmarked 14th January 1885 ? CONSTANTINOPLE and part LLOYD Wiki Österreichischer Lloyd (English: Austrian Lloyd, Italian: Lloyd Austriaco) was the largest Austro-Hungarian shipping company founded in 1833. It was based at Trieste in the Austrian Littoral, the main port of the Cisleithanian (Austrian) half of the Dual Monarchy. In 1833, 19 sea transport insurance companies, banking houses and numerous individual shareholders, among them the Austrian politician Karl Ludwig von Bruck, decided to form the Austrian Lloyd Trieste. Originally the company answered the purpose to exchange information on European maritime trade and oversea markets, modelled on Lloyd's Register in London. Relying on a network of business correspondents and newspapers circulating in the Port of Trieste, it issued shipping news and also undertook to provide postal services with sailing vessels supplied by the Austrian Navy. Within a short period of its formation, the administration applied to Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria for the privilege of steam navigation with the Levant. On April 20, 1836, the steam-navigation department was introduced and during its second meeting on August 2 of the same year, the department decided to build six steamships. For this reason, 1836 is considered the year the company was founded. The year 1844 saw another leap in the company's growth when it acquired First Danubian Steam Navigation Company's line via Constantinople to Smyrna along with all its equipment. A year later, Austrian Lloyd was declared the property of the postal service of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Hey Rod, I'm curious. The Viktor Weixler poster stamps, about halfway down the first page of this thread. I have the bottom two, and I've always thought they were produced in Germany, since it reads Munchen (Munich) at the bottom. Though I know Osterreich is Austria. Printed in Germany for Austrian client/market?

I wonder how George Beal came across that information? possibly hidden somewhere in Willi Dachauer's papers.

Native Germans / Austrians may be more able to discuss this, but I see Weixler as a freelance illustrator, and his advertising posters would be at home in either State, printed in Germany no doubt to access cheaper / better production opportunities, or perhaps where tourism companies were centred.

Erika Stiedry-Wagner was a German born opera singer. Active from the 1920s to 50s. It checks out, she would have been 31-32 years old when Willi Dauchauer was designing the stamps, and she had been in Vienna, Austria since 1919. She apparently appears in 4 films.

Omg - about Erika Wagner - I had to listen to some of the works described in the article - Schoenberg etc - for a class I took at U of M. Have you ever heard them? The atonal stuff - no melody, in an exotic scale - so weird. Some folks adore it, though. Just not for me!

Not for me also. I was into Budgie and Uriah Heep as a youngster, but that no longer resonates, I have mellowed into Cher.

Wasn't Budgie the drummer in Souxie and the Banshees? The two of them also created the spinoff group The Creatures. Or are we thinking of a different Budgie?

Budgie was an early 1970's blues oriented heavy metal rock band from Cardiff, Wales. James I was originally influenced by Cream, at the time, the best music I had ever heard and thereafter, I went spinning off in other directions trying to recapture that sound. Never did. Budgie and Uriah Heep were branches, but for me, unlike Cream, became dated.

Once upon a time, you would sit down for breakfast, an egg in a cup, toast in a rack, a pot of freshly brewed tea, and have a morning delivered Newspaper to keep abreast of the World. So civilised.

How times have changed. As a kid I had a newspaper route, money went to buy stamps . Everyone on the route would put aside stamps for me. Happy times from days of old.
