1926 Austria, Scott numbers B71-B76. One of my favorite Austrian Semi-Postal sets of all time. I love the engraving, I love the stamps but more than anything I love the story they represent. The set commemorates Richard Wagner's' four opera cycle: "The Ring of the Nibelung" (Der Ring des Nibelungen). In my humble opinion, one of the greatest allegories of humanity ever conceived. Its genius is expressed through the music of course but the story and the way the music identifies the characters takes the work to an entirely different level. I've been studying the work for several decades, it's a monumental work and truly takes time to digest and understand in depth. I've found the study personally rewarding in ways I wouldn't have imagined. I can't say enough how much this opera has meant to me but it's a difficult work to recommend to anyone who's unfamiliar with the work or its controversial composer. Depending on the performances (which conductor, which orchestra, where played) the four operas can last more than 15 hours total. They're sung in German so you'll need a Libretto with the words to the opera translated into your native language. That's the prep work. Wikipedia lists over 30 complete recordings of this work so there are plenty of choices. My personal favorites are the 1958-1965 set with Sir Georg Solti conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (Very Fine stereo on 14 CDs) and the 1955 Joseph Keilberth cycle with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (Heroic singing, 14 CDs). I could write more but I'll let you decide about the music. The stamps speak for themselves... Rob

This stamp has been up Mount Everest, as attested by Austrian Mountaineer Robert Schauer. The card reads:
As a participant of the Austrian Himalaya Expedition 1978 I confirm that the documentary sheet with a 50 groschen stamp and the official special stamp (number see below) was carried by us for the benefit of the SOS Children's Village up to camp 5 at 8,450 meters of Mount Everest.

I have recently been working on mounting 19th-Century stamps from Austria in my album. Oddly, I have some copies which clean up nicely (see the two on the left in this photo) and others, which, no matter how hard I try to remove all residual gum from the backs, they still curl up as shown, even after weeks of drying under a stack of heavy books. Can anyone make a suggestion here?
The two stamps shown on the right still have a sheen of residual gum on the backs. I have soaked them multiple times, and have carefully scraped the backs while they are wet in an attempt to remove all gum. This technique works well for me about 80-90% of the time, but in 10-20% of the cases, I am unable to get the stamps to lie flat in my album. Any advice would be welcome!
This problem most frequently occurs in the early 1890 issue on hard transparent paper which will roll up into a tiny cylinder. Have only recently found a solution - Soak in a PANCREATIN solution overnight and the glue will have disappeared. Bought the caplets online and dissolve 1 cap in 250 ml of water (takes a while), after wash stamp in mild detergent solution

REL1948 I agree the stamps commemorating Wagner's "Ring" are wonderful as are many of Austria's issues. It's a country where one can build an interesting collection without huge expenditure. I too find the Ring fascinating because of the intricacy of Wagner's use of leitmotiv throughout the Cycle. However, notwithstanding the greatness of his music, Wagner was a deeply flawed human and his genius will always be tarnished by his virulent anti-Semitism. There is an interesting documentary narrated by the British actor Stephen Fry about Wagner well worth watching. Also a 1968 paperback "Aspects of Wagner" by Bryan Magee provides the most concise overview of Wagner's theories of opera I have encountered. Might be hard to find the book these days but well worth a look.

Scott 520-556 A definitive stamp series was issued from 1948 to 1952 featuring women from various parts of Austria in traditional costumes. These were printed on toned paper with glossy gum.All are photogravure printings except for the 10s value SC 556 which was engraved. A second series of 21 stamps was issued from 1958 to 1959,on white paper with flat gum.SC521A-555A. There are numerous varieties with different paper types and gum types, which can often only be seen on mint stamps.I read somewhere that there could be up to 10 different varities for each stamp, which makes this a very interesting and challenging series to collect.

Just received these Austrian revenue and postage stamps. Love the revenues. Know of any books in English that will educate me about them?

The Barefoot Austrian Revenue catalogue is great (and in English), as to a specialized catalogue, Google Translate will become your friend!
One thing that attracted me to them is the early issues, and the fact that they can be acquired rather inexpensively. I have gotten several good size lots where the mailing was more than the lot cost!

I love the artwork and the engraving, along with the trip into the past. My grandmother was born in 1891, her sister in 1878, gram's niece in 1903. This puts their childhood in context for me.
Thanks, Stan.

The Barefoot Austrian Revenue catalogue is great (and in English)... The American Philatelic Research Library has many of these Barefoot revenue catalogs available for borrowing by members or for specific requests by either members or non-members for scanned pages or photocopies of particular pages. If you are interested in access to these unique resources for revenue issues contact the APRL at either (814) 933-3803 ext. 240 or library@stamps.org.

The Austria-Hungary Empire was dissolved at the end of WW 1 and the independent state of Czechoslovakia was created on Oct 28 1918 when it declared its independence. The validity of Austrian stamps in Czechoslovakia ended on 28 February 1919.From March 1 1919 only Czech stamps could be used.Austrian stamps could be exchanged for Czech stamps up until March 15 1919. This strip on piece from a money order was cancelled on the last day of use,Feb 28 1919.The cancellation is from Rychnov nad Knetznou, formerly Reichenau. The reverse has an early Czech stamp, dated 4 March 1919.

A nice engraving - one of the reasons I collect Austria. 1976 issue commemorating the 350th anniversary of the Austrian Peasants war. Issue depicts the siege of Linz - from a 17th century etching. From a collection I just purchased. This is my favorite collection to just look at and admire the design and printing quality. And a 1974 Christmas issue - wow - gilt and detailed engraving. Lovely. Now that’s a stamp I’d love putting on my Christmas cards!
