Austria : Offices in Crete (Varnish Bars come up nicely under the scanner, as does the "granite paper") I am having issues with the 5c 1905 and 1907, my stamps may not be in correct position, I do not have a "Blue-green" to compare. In the "paper coloured through" (1914) the back of the stamp is blue, the 1908 is white.

Austria 1877 Newspaper Tax Stamp Sc# PR5a ? If this is "Pale Ultramarine" this little rascal has a CV of $2,500 Colour? Forgery? Notes: No visible Wmk Hinge remnant Comments and opinions welcomed If this looks promising, a suitable Austrian Expertiser? Would one send a stamp example soaked of attached hinge remnants or leave as is? Thanks

Maybe contact austriaphilatelicsociety.com/index.html When you do inform them that you are a member of APS Chapter 1591. I would leave the hinge as it is with instructions to the expert if needed he or she has permission to soak it off.

The Philatelic Foundation has had two submissions, both of which were determined to be the normal shade of blue.

Newspaper Tax Stamps Reference: Gaube A. Th.: Die Zeitungsstempelmarken von =D6sterreich und Lombardei-Venetiens (The Newspaper Tax Stamps of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia). Vienna Vol. 1 (1958), Vol. 2 (1960) and Vol. 3 (1962). pp.394. (Reviewed in AUSTRIA, No. 14 p.48). (APS Library No. 23). The stamps were bought from the PO and affixed to the newspaper (journal) by the publisher. In some countries, the stamps were affixed to the blank newsprint and newspaper was printed over the stamps. Blair Example of Newspaper printed on a pre attached Tax Stamp (Belgium)

Added a new 50kr Franz Josef: This looks to be the fine print perf 12 issued in 1880, at the end of the run for these, #40b in Scott.

In my opinion, same print as CanadianPhilatelist's donation auction. (The Red-Orange) Until proven otherwise, I am calling this the 1866 Type llc Reprint. Faint forward serif to the "G" Block of 4 with wide margins. CV : $2

I am having a day of Hiccups. Austria / Slovenia ? Karnten / Kaernten Probably Carinthian Plebiscite 1920 Cinderella? Text reads? Solved: I wrote to the Austrian Philatelic Society, and had an instant reply from Mr. Andy Taylor. Our Librarian has looked in "Briefmarkenaustellung 1000 Jahre selbständiges Herzogtum Kärnten" published in 1976 and says: Yes, it is one of a set of three depicting Heiligenblut - each comes in two varieties that relate to the value tablet - thinner number with point or thicker number without point. There are also differences in the shades of blue. Produced by the Austrians for the Carinthia plebiscite in 1920. Andy Taylor [Editor, Austrian Philatelic Society]. Subsidiary Info (Bamra1) Volksabstimmung = Plebiscite. Karnten = Carinthia. Propaganda/fundraising label by the Austrian area ahead of the 1920 plebiscite on whether to join Austria or the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). The Parish Church at Heiligenblut.

Here's a modern "gimmick" stamp I received once upon a time on a package from Austria. The 1997 World Cup qualification game against Sweden is one of the legendary games for Austrian soccer fans, and this lenticular stamp shows the goal scored by Austria's Andi Herzog. The scan isn't too brilliant so I've also posted a clip from an Austrian TV broadcast which shows the goal. Ryan

Varnish bars? Ah yes I see them, but it is the interesting cancel that first caught my attention. It is Bielitz, which is now in Poland and called Bielsko. I am not sure what that character is after the "z", but perhaps it is a "1". Maybe there were more than one offices/cancels. Bielitz was also in the boundaries of the zone of the aborted 1920 Eastern Silesia plebiscite, and Polish Eastern Silesia stamps were used there. Nice pair

Maybe check if Lutsk, Ukraine fits in the timeline for your usage? Bingo. You're a wizard, Collin. Thanks so much, early European history, and my eyes just glaze over, it's so involved. Good timeline, and taking into account the grey areas, time wise, for the supply and replacement of cancelling hammers, in the event of border / political movements.

2008 (Guess) Thermally printed Postage Meter Labels. This is the limit of my knowledge of these. I thought better to scan / post an image before the printing disappears.

Are the 130 and 65s values? Maybe not. Austria switched from schilling/groschen- to Euro-based postage denominations in 2002. Clearly, you don't have euros, unless the 130 is 1.30 Eu? Around this time, it seems that the inland letter rate was .55 Eu and the registered rate was 2.10 Eu. Can anyone explain the numbers?

1888 General Revenue. (Detail) Forbin Catalogue #300 I Gulden / 1 Florin "Pour acquit de tous droits" My interpretation: Vignette overprinted by the standard Burelage of the Austrian Leaf of a tree,(with veins) in Blue. We see a rather circumspect, youthful Mercury, with his winged Petasos, and Caduceus (allegory as patron saint of financial gain, and commerce) on the left, seemingly at odds with a coy Femida on the right (allegory of Jurisprudence) The duck at the rump of Mercury ? Allegorical icons, surrounding Femida, we see at the foot the Beehive (financial prudence) A spanner and Cogwheel (commerce) Femida holds in her left hand, (above the hilt of the sword of Justice) Boulton and Watts 1788 Fly Ball Governor, (Control and Regulate) (This Fly Ball Governor still being used on a Australian Destroyer I served on in 1970) All in all, a most beautifully designed stamp. An intriguing jot of the original document, still attached to the revenue.

Nice take Collin, I was assuming the price to be hidden in the barcode. Note: (Values) These may not always indicate postal rates, oft times, these labels are used as a "make up" value.

A strip of five newspaper stamps: I'm thinking P9B in Scott. They're new to me and I haven't checked Michel or Yvert yet. I see Type III, which would make them the 1kr violet fine print from 1876. I'll take alternate opinions, too. I'm going to need to be snowed in for a few days before I try to puzzle out the cancels. I'm not sure there is enough distinguishing information to make headway. A pretty little strip, though.

A pretty little strip, though. I concur Collin, Definitely type lll (the outer ring is broken into the top frame) However, Gibbons suggests only type 1 or 2 come in fine / coarse print. I have seen pages of study of these newspaper stamps, in auction rooms, the shades are numerous. Gibbons Catalogue 1960 (The wings on the Petasos are vastly different from each type)
