I am curious about this- membership (or CD) both seem reasonable. For those taking this route- what paper do you use to print on? cardstock? Bright white?
Although will some time before I am able to focus on my US interests, when I finally get there, i think I'd like to (maybe) put together an album based on my sense of order (which may be rather interesting) and allow me to display examples not included in some of album producers, ( and not blank squares...)
Do you use a D-ring 3 hole- or stay with a 2 whole al;bum approach?

I like coloured cardstock - green and orange. I just ordered more of each just now.
And I use slide-in-from-top sheet protectors. No holes required as the sheets supply those.

brightonpete- can you upload a photo of one of your green and orange pages- I never thought about using colored cardstock!
or sheet protectors (and do they provide enough clarity?)
and what weight ? (65#?)

Off white 50lb cardstock, 3 hole punched for D-ring binders is what I use for Steiner pages.

I use white 65 cardstock having moved down from 110.I print quadrille pages for my BNA stuff and Steiner pages for everything else. The quads allow me to mount anything I please in any quantity (see the funky frog collection in the Canada thread) I also use the top loading page protectors with three ring binders.I usually find enough binders in the thrift stores or Walmarts, heck I've even found some at yard sales.I try to keep my budget for the stamps and not the supplies. Many binders I got for 25 cents.I have a copy of the Steiner disk you can borrow when you get ready to start printing pages.

I purchased a CD of the Steiner pages a few years ago. I did not renew after the year expired to keep online access. The CD contains all the early years of the countries that interest me. I can print what I need at anytime. I use a variety of paper types depending on my mood when printing for a particular country. Have not yet ventured to coloured pages yet. I use three hole binders so my paper is eith pre punched for three hole or I do it myself with other paper stock. I am in the process of trying to create my own pages for certain series of multiple year issues. I prefer to have all these issues in one place as opposed to having them in the year of issue pages. This is my way of organizing things.

We also go through binders in our office that, for me, though used, are still serviceable, so when our assistants get ready to throw them away they know to give them to me instead. I have a stash of binders so large now that I no longer have to purchase, at least for a while.

I have the Steiner CD to 2010 and also let my membership lapse after that. I use 65lb. Astrobright Cover Stardust White 8-1/2x11. It is off-white with small flecks of color that are barely visible. It has pretty much become my paper of choice for printing album pages. I also like the blank quadrille pages that Steiner offers to add pages for varieties, minor numbers, covers, fdcs, etc...to my collections.

At work, we routinely "purge" large: D ring vendors binders- remove the front and binding page and it's a white binder! In the past we've periodically tossed them as we have too many....but this seems like the perfect "re-purposing" opportunity! recycling is good!

I'm game and I'll just ignore everything "newer"

Here is a sample of the green & orange pages. I like how the stamps "pop" out at you. White or cream, they just blend in, unless you use black mounts. Black mounts only look good on black pages! Both are taken with the protectors. You can tell I have switched since I started...

I think the colored paper background is really attractive and I might look at using this for a country or two at some point. Here is a sample of my pages...I agree that white or off-white backgrounds aren't as attractive but I have always used black mounts, even for used stamps. I know a lot of people think I'm crazy but I really prefer the look.

I used to use only black mounts, but then I had black quadrilled pages to mount them on. But now with a computer & designing my own pages, I can't print white on black. So the next best thing for me was printing on coloured paper. Green was my first choice, then orange. I also bought maroon for some reason, but that wasn't good for printing! I'll have to arrange my Iceland like what you have done. That looks great, darkormex!

Hi. I used to use 65# cardstock for my Steiner pages, but I moved down to a 32lb white paper and I like that a lot. It's premium paper but not super stiff like cardstock.

I use 24 lb bright white paper (from Walmart) when I print from Steiner. Seems heavy enough for my needs. I also go to Sam's Club and buy the white 2" 3 ring binders. I also like the clear mounts. They don't show the mistakes as much if I put the stamp in a little cockeyed.

My paper is Domtar 28/70 cream at around 5.3 mils thick.
If it was not for the Steiner pages, I would not be collecting worldwide. Traditional albums are just too expensive and the general worldwide are unwieldy. You print what you want and when you need it and you can create custom pages that blend in.
Some paper thicknesses:
White Ace 8 mil Minkus 7.5 32# laser 4 mil 28# laser 5 mil Mystic 4.6 mil Domtar 5.3 mil Well Centered Publish 7.1mil Cougar60 4mil USPS Souv. Pages 5.5 mil 20# 3.8 24# 4.8 28# 5.8 Index Card 8.5 m

With you on a Mac, try "Graphic". That is what I use. Veery easy to move things around, although Steiner tries to make it difficult.
My only beef with the app is the text. It is not to normal Mac app standards.
But it is easy and versatile.
I bought a new iMac recently, but only 21.5". I should have gone for the 27". With Graphic on my old 27", what I saw on the screen, was actual size. Now I have to more careful measuring!

I use Libre Office to open PDFs and make changes. It is usually easiest to add similar objects and move them around. Given that stamp boxes are usually in standard sizes you can do this.

Can Steiner pages be easily modified/edited -stampp size, layout arrangement, where the text is added, arrows/pointers inserted, import images? Never used Steiner but are they not password protected to prevent alterations? Easy to get around it but it's not done with basic pdf apps.

No password protection that I have found. They just make it difficult to alter. Everything in one layer & grouped. Worse post-2000 (or so) in that there are individual letters for everything. No words, every letter/number is its own entity making up the words etc.

No words, every letter/number is its own entity making up the words etc. I can ungroup elements but do not believe the post-2000 differences are intentional. I see differences but did not attribute much to any specific period. It is just a functional of the PDF creation software. For example, older PDFs had Arial MT font embedded as a sub to Helvetica but eventually Steiner switched to subsetting Helvetica. You can use the Comment function to deal with text as one entity.

Yes it is easy to ungroup all the elements. But instead of putting a string of letter and numbers in one element ("10", "PF", "1945", "Fire Safety"), every single letter and digit is a single element ("1", "0", "P", "F", "1", "9", "4", "5", "F", "i", "r", "e" etc etc etc). So instead of say 15 elements describing a stamp, there are now 60. Easy enough to select, delete & replace with what I want though.
I don't know what you mean by this. Comment function?

My first attempt to print a Steiner page on black paper was a complete failure. I modified a Steiner page and changed everything to yellow and printed on my HP color laser printer. I see a faint outline on the page if you look closely. Hmm. I was not expecting a lot due to thin lines (border, stamp box) but even the text was barely visible. I will need to try something bolder now.
