Please accept my belated thank you for posting that link. The downloadable publication Simplifying the Machins is a nice primer for someone who is not familiar with the issue.

I was looking to add to my Engraver's collection and found that at least two Machins were engraved: And one by Slania: I fiddled around with My Inkscape practice and a new avatar was born

Fiddling with image manipulation software can be fun. These are various FotoSketcher manipulations of your first Machin (included as the leftmost image in the first row): I think this is my favorite:

How best to treat this Lady? May I soak? if so how Employ "cut square? Any Catalogue Number available? Date of Issue? These are known as Gold Horizon labels. There's a blog out there with some info, and a search on that term will give you more, I'm sure. I'm sure you can use your white spirits method to soak them off paper. I use paint thinner and have success, but you have to be careful if you like scraping gum off after removing from the backing paper (I do). The security slits make it tough to get the gum off without damaging the label. I've posted this before on TSF, here's proof of success! After removal of the gum, I soak these in water and then press in a drying book as per usual, that's why I need to get the gum off ... Ryan

The fun (or lack thereof) of reading Stanley Gibbons, and the complexity of the Machins. Wait to you get hold of a Deegam Handbook for Machins! Here's about 15% of the listings for the 1/2 pence blue Machin .... it's like learning a new language to become fluent with the different codes needed to understand the catalogue. Lots of fun if you like the nitpick flyspeck type of stamp collecting. Ryan

The Connoisseur Catalogue of Machin Stamps and Decimal Definitives is a very detailed catalogue, similar in scope to the Deegam Handbook that I posted about earlier. A considerable portion of the catalogue is currently available for free online. The chapters vary by publication date - some chapters have listings for stamps up to 2008, some go up to 2011, etc. Not as useful as a Deegam Handbook for those who are completionists, but there's a lot of info available there. It looks as if someone took a pair of pinking shears to the right edge of the 1p.

Very interesting post/item, Graham ( thegubman ). Thanks for sharing! For what it's worth, I agree with Steve ( tomiseksj ). It looks like someone has used pinking shears to cut the right-hand margin of the right stamp. I haven't thought about pinking shears for a long time. When I was young, I remember that my mother had a pair that she used in her sewing activities. In the US, I have seen scissors at arts & crafts stores that will cut paper in various edge styles. When scrapbooking was a big thing a few years ago, these art scissors were quite popular. My wife had a pair that actually cut edges to look like stamp perforations. When she eventually got rid of her scrapbooking tools, I kept those scissors.... somewhere. In any case, an interesting find!

I have had a few like these over the years. Agree the perforations on the right hand stamp do not look correct so something appears to have been done to it. It is just odd that I've seen before. Graham

A special display and Talk by Douglas Muir on the 40th anniversary was held in Kensington, London. I remember having to book a place as there was only tickets for 25 enthusiasts at a time. I cannot recall how many talks/displays there were on the day, maybe 2 or 3. At the end of the tour we were all given special cards and a First Day Cover by Douglas which made it rather special. Here are the free gifts !

A mini sheet issued on this day in 2010 ,part of the 2010 London 2010 Festival of Stamps.I met Londonbus1 and spent an enjoyable day at this show . The litho 1.46ukl value can only be found on this sheet and as far as I know, does not appear to have a Gibbons catalogue nunmber.

anglobob.........I remember the day well, indeed the whole week was like no other and never will be again. Time to reminisce. A lovely sheet, I love these Jeffrey Matthews Colour Palette types. Beauties.
I just checked and there are other values without numbers: 88p, 9p, and 2p but my catalogue is a bit old (2013) and the numbers are prefixed 'U' which will have been moved by now (hopefully) to 'Y' numbers. Yet the MS does have a number.
Curious.

I just have the SG Concise and does annoy me that SG does not provide a separate numbers for individual stamps from the sheet. Scott would list them with a suffix like MS3073a,b.c.d.e. etc.

Stoneham lists a £1.46 sea-green stamp as EDMG146. Try to find it in the catalogue for value is impossible.
This Stoneham has the craziest numbering system for Machin's that I have ever seen. But then I suppose it has to be some kind of crazy with it being around for so long!

brightonpete.....I don,t have a Stoneham catalogue so have no idea if that is for the litho or photogravure stamp.Have no idea why Gibbons only gives a number to the photogravure issue Y1745. I try to collect used copies, and would imagine it is hard to find used copies as few people would buy the mini sheet and use the stamps for postage.I sent a sheet to the USA and it was partly destroyed in the mail.I managed to salvage the stamps but not the complete sheet. Have scanned part of it with the photogravure issue. Anglobob
