OK, try again. The 1914 seal, not auto-censored by the board software (I hope). Ryan

'Morning Ryan, Lovely stuff. Yes, I like this size for the forum, I like HUGE for my database. I am going to select "medium" for my photobucket images. You have a nice selection of seals, I notice CV on Ebay 1912 - 1930 (something like that) was US $30 A good full set will be a nice CV I should think.

I'll continue with another couple of batches of my seals. Here are seals from 1921, 1923 and 1925, plus I've posted a second copy of the 1922 seal, in case Rod wants to nab the scan. The one you posted earlier was pretty banged up! Not that mine is great, too many of the brown spots for that. The 1921 seal features a Greenland theme, and the 1923 seal shows a scene from the Faroes. With the 1925 seal, they finally put the country name on the seal. Ryan

I have some sheets and part sheets which I'll check later. I have other designs of some of these years but just showed singles. The 1990 is one of my favourites of the modern variety. I have the full set but only in singles, so just showed the two with 'Philatelic connections' !!

This is one of my all time favourite seals and shows a Greenlandic girl in traditional dress. Also the Crests of Greenland and The Royal Crest of Denmark are shown . The Seal was reprinted in 1983 in a Miniature Sheet of 10 with descriptive text. I do not have a copy but have been on the lookout for some time ! It is 'drop dead' gorgeous !! Londonbus1...always in love with stamps !!

I'm going to backtrack for a brief moment to the 1951 Danish Christmas seal issue. 1951 was the first year that featured more than one design on the sheet of seals. That year, there were 4 face different seals, and in 1952, they started frequently using a different design for every position on the sheet, so you can collect 50 face different seals for many years. Occasionally, though, there would be fewer different designs on a sheet, sometimes a block of 4 or a strip of 5, sometimes larger blocks of 10 or 20, and every now and then the sheet had only 2 different designs, such as the 1973 issue which featured a white cat and a black cat (already posted here by James). Here's the block of 4 for 1951. Ryan

That must be a $200 collection you have there. Ha ha - probably not! I can't recall where I got them all, but they were a part of some large "box o' stuff" type of lot that I like to pick up. I wasn't a seal collector and I've never bought any seals, but sometimes that stuff just sort of falls out of the sky and lands on you whether you're looking for it or not. So, now I have a ziplock baggie filled with a bunch of Danish seals. The group starts to tucker out in the mid-'70s so it gets pretty spotty after that, just the occasional seal that came on piece with some stamps that have been soaked off. But I'll keep posting what I have. Ryan

If you think about things mundane, such as I, your latest offering shows Christmas Baubles (US:Balls) on trees. Whatever has that to do with Christmas? You may ask.
Well we can blame it all on a German glass blower from Lauscha

Looking at the previous postings, I've noticed a decoration that reappears on other years. This red & white heart shown on the 1951 issue also appears on the 1937 and 1963 issues posted earlier - the 1963 post was perhaps just a lucky shot as that was one of the years with 50 different designs. I'm not familiar with this, I would guess the red & white represents the colours of the Danish flag but I don't know any history behind it. Since I don't know anything about it, that's a good excuse to look it up. We're familiar with the Danish wavy lines & numeral definitives, and you might remember that the oldest (and newest) issues had little hearts in the design. It turns out that the Danish coat of arms also has 9 little hearts in it. Hearts are a frequently used symbol in Denmark, so perhaps it isn't surprising that these Christmas decorations are heart-shaped. (I suppose it's better than having wild man decorations, as the Queen's personal coat of arms features two wild men with big beards and clubs.) The pattern that is seen on the heart decorations results from weaving cut strips of paper. Hans Christian Andersen is considered to be the inventor of the Danish Christmas heart, and they are now common elements of any Danish Christmas scene. Here's a little web page which includes instructions for making a basic heart - they're kind of tricky, you can open them up and put small gifts inside them. www.ebygomm.ourownlittleworld.org/crafts/danish-christmas-hearts/Ryan

The things we learn from Philately I wonder if that lass is from Yorkshire? her website ehbygomm is a slang word from Yorkshire, "Eh By Gomm" meaning Oh my God. It's a bit of a countryism, People use it when they want pull your leg. In 1841 it was decided that coins should bear a mint mark – showing where they had been minted – and the initials of the mint master and the medallist. The Mint in Altona chose an orb as its mint mark, while the Mint in Copenhagen opted for a heart, a private mint mark long used by the mint masters Christian Wineke, father and son. The heart was replaced by a crown in 1842, but when the krone was introduced in 1875, the original heart was re-introduced. The last Altona coins were minted in 1861, and since 1864 the only Danish mint has been the one in Copenhagen. Today the hearts on the coins are therefore a purely decorative feature. Denmark's choice for the new millenium....

Here comes another small grouping of seals, 1959 through 1962. The 1961 design didn't work so well, silver printing on a grey background. Even holding the actual stamp and reflecting it into the light to best advantage, I still have a tough time making out the date without really working my poor eyeballs. Ryan edit: oops, hadn't noticed that Rod already had a 1960 seal in his image database - the spot was left empty in his spreadsheet.

These two are not strictly for the list. The part sheet shows a seal I scanned before that had rather an obtrusive cancellation. This is to show it in a better light !! The other shows clearly the heart-shaped decoration used in Denmark that was talked about earlier. It reminded me of when my daughter was younger. Friends in Denmark used to send me packets of these hearts to make up for our Christmas tree and we would sit down to make them in the days leading up to the festive season. It wasn't too easy as I recall. I hope to visit Denmark later this year or early next year to visit those same friends and will tell them about our discussion here and how they entered into it ! Londonbus1......Merry Christmas...as james said !!
