The Brazil stamp I mentioned on another thread arrived in a neatly postmarked cover with some other interesting stamps on it. (Stamp dealers around the world who use real stamps on outgoing mail, how great you are!) I really like those two musical instrument stamps on the left, and I might soak them off for my topical collection, but I think I'll keep them on the cover instead.

This cover was lovingly and gently handled by the United States Postal Service. The folks in Texas carefully gave the Christmas seal a sock on the nose cancel while leaving the space issue in pristine, uncanceled condition. < Sigh >

How did this ever get to me? This contained coins from a numista swap from Italy.... Posted using stamps totalling 95 lire.... If my research is correct that equates to about £0.05! Or am I missing something?

Registered R1 envelope from France. I don't think the registered letter R1 requires confirmation of receipt because the self-adhesive label with track no. it was not removed from the large R label. And of course the stamps were not canceled - maybe better than being canceled with a pen. Nelson Mandela stamp - Issued in 23 January 2023. “Ten years after the death of the former South African head of state, La Poste pays tribute to Nelson Mandela by launching a stamp bearing the image of this figure in the fight against apartheid. The occasion also to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of his Nobel Peace Prize.”

This afternoon’s mail made me smile especially the Lady and the Tramp stamp. I see that the stamps made it here without cancellation.

Registered R1 envelope from France. I don't think the registered letter R1 requires confirmation of receipt because the self-adhesive label with track no. it was not removed from the large R label. At least in the UK these are now read by handheld electronic devices carried by the postman/woman which can also be signed by the recipient.

I received this box today. Chocked full of stuff to sort and discover. My wife got it in before I got home and was terribly intrigued by the box covered in stamps. Then I opened it for her and her response, “Oh. More stamps.” I always tell her, there’s much worse vices I could have. Lol

I got an unexpected treat in today's mail. TSFer swvl made some of these and sent them to Lafayette, Louisiana, where Gaines was from. The illustration on the left brings back some memories; it's adapted from the paperback edition of A Gathering of Old Men, a book I picked up somewhere never having heard of Ernest J. Gaines. (The paperback had at least six or seven old men on its cover, and obviously couldn't render adequately on half an envelope.) I read it and was totally amazed; it's one of those stories that grabs you and won't let you go, and I finished it in one evening. One of Gaines's books got picked up for Oprah's Book Club, so he at last got some long-deserved publicity in his later years, and probably some royalties to live on. Thank you, Simon, thank you!

After looking at this cover recently received from Stan ( stainlessb), I got to wondering about this spray-on cancel, which no longer has the wavy line "killer bars" to cover the stamp to the right of the date/time/location portion of the postmark. Is this the way that all US cancels are going? Has this stamp now been electronically cancelled or something? Or is it just considered as uncancelled? Can someone who is up on the current USPS practices comment further on this? Just curious. Thanks!

This envelope arrived this afternoon from a cover seller in Port Williams, Nova Scotia. They always seem to have unusual cancels. This one is a bit too busy commemorating New England Planters in Nova Scotia since 1760. He had fun using up stamps and failed math but got away with it.

This cover was received yesterday, a day after it was posted, pretty good going for what appears to add up to second class payment of 68p. However, on closer inspection. the green Machin is a demonetised 7 old pence stamp and 9p violet was pre-used!

Well daniel the cachet indicates it came from an antique dealer and as several other stamps look somewhat grubby or creased , I guess he has been ripping out an old stamp album and more than one of the stamps has been "recycled ". That said, Well done to the delivery side of Royal mail for getting it to you within 24 Hours. By and large I am a fan of RM , when they are good they are very good , it is sad we usually hear complaints about those that go wrong, as if in the huge volume of things that was the norm.

Received today from France, posted with 24.3 francs worth of stamps, equivalent to 3.70 euro (as noted by the sender on the side), I feel sorry for the French postal staff if they have to do the maths on these!

I got an offer-letter in the mail today that I thought was pretty strange. "Approved for post in London"? Hey, I'm sorry for everything, King George - wasn't aware you were still running the joint. The bulk-mail processors were probably just trying to make this look more attention-worthy, but using a barn stamp with a big ol' Stars and Stripes wasn't a great example of thinking things through, eh?

Indeed, the conversion from Francs to Euros is a rather awkward 6.55953 Francs = 1 Euro (which you can approximate to 20/3 if you're down with mental arithmetic, like I am). In the early 2000s, when the Euro was introduced, pocket calculators were sold with a special button to convert currencies. Quite a few storekeepers kept them handy by the register, especially for the period when both Francs and Euro tender were in legal use.

Received the scanned SG43 1d rose red plate 166 today, decent condition, Along with another 1 from a different dealer which will be returned as not in acceptable condition. Depends who you order from I suppose. The stamp on the envelope containing the 1d red is from 2004 Christmas issue, 2nd class rate. Trial stamps are known showing alternative face values.

I finally received another shipment of letters yesterday. This letter was mailed from Belgium on March 3 2022 and for some reason was sent to Malaysia. The letter was opened but none of the contents were missing. There are no cancels anywhere so there is no way to trace the routing of this letter.

Not strictly speaking today's mail, since I'm catching up on some scanning, but last week's mail... The Uruguay stamp I posted in another thread arrived in this interesting cover. The block of six stamps is striking, even if the stamps themselves (which appear to be marking the 10th anniversary of a financial institution in 2004) are a little drab. I like the postmarks, too. And here's a cropped image of another recent envelope received from Finland, with a FDC inside. Interesting stamps on this one, too — a cascade of salty Scandinavian licorice, a moody forest landscape, and a tiny stamp with some leaves for extra postage.
