And just for fun - what do you think the number of this PB is? These damaged or very well worn PB obliterators are always 'fun'! I believe this isn't a '13' as the '13' wasn't that much used so is invariably easily read when seen. It is either a damaged '16' or a very well worn '18' in my humble opinion. Take your pick. Interesting none the less. Dave

These are the two examples I have of a ' 13': The 1d I think is a valid one in my opinion. But what of the 6d? Is this a 'B' version? ie do we have here a 13A & a 13B ? Dave

I also have this image of a '13'. Not sure where I found this image but it is extremely close in resemblance to my 6d above! Dave

What do you make of these?? Interesting ones here Philip. The first one looks like a '10' doesn't it! But it could also be a '16', perhaps the 16A in a state of decline, we know that it did wear rather badly, to a point that it could be mistaken for a very worn '18'. The second one there 'may' be an Auckland '1B'. PB 1 Auckland - "The PB '1' obliterators were then used extensively at the Auckland Post Office until early 1865, at first exclusively and for the last three years in parallel with other cancelling devices". A not so common use of it after early 1865! Dave

neilmac has inspired me to group my 1865 4d Rose's together - for a group photo! Here are 28 examples I have scattered around my books. The top one is my only unused copy, next line has the 2 listed shades, Rose & Deep Rose and the rest are just a used bunch of 4d's. Some dated, others with obliterators, some with PB's. NB Only 120,000 of these were printed in June 1865. It's fun to look for early dated examples, I believe my earliest in this lot is dated JY 65 (1st one on the bottom row). Dave Gee Dave No wonder second hand 4d rose are expensive Great grouping Well done Grant

A nice lot Mark. One of your 4d Rose's has a clear early date of use - JY 18 65These were issued on, I believe, 1 June 1865, so yours is pretty early. About equal to my earliest one too! My cancel not as clearly read as yours though. NB In those days, the 1860's, Dunedins overseas mail to the UK via Australia & The Bluff left Otago harbor on the 18th of each month. Dave

Maybe someone would like to take a crack at this one too. Maybe not even a PB but maybe a double strike of a number "7"?

That is a very worn PB cancel! I think you are right xacs, it looks like a very worn 7A, twice, to me. Not much else would seem to explain it. Dave

The bottom of the number "7s" seems to have feet - unlike any PB7s I've seen. It looks like a weird "11" maybe? How it got that angle is a good question? Good challenge that one.

Neil, if your interested in the 2 4d Yellows PM me. Does anyone have examples of the ALF in circle cancel, Alford Forest, as below. Vol 7 of the handbooks says " ...first employed an obliterator with reversed letters ALF inside a large circle. This was supplemented with a similar obliterator with the letters correctly cut. Both are found on Chalon stamps of 1871-74. I am wondering about earlier use and whether both were used simultaneously. The above example may possibly be brown-lilac Perf 13 but the perforating is so poor that it is difficult to be sure and the shade and it is difficult to match with either brown-lilac or one of the latter lilac variants. I have a copy of the Tom Lee and John Watts Chalon book in hard copy. Apparently they sold it in cd rom format to reduce the price as the book blew out to 400 plus pages. Ken Jury however thought it was cool so printed 50 copies to sell on to his customers. I'm lucky to have one of the 50. Interesting though, I found this mini sheet tucked into the back cover. Notice the overprint in black. I wonder how many of these there are? Neil

Anyone know what this might be? The three bars either side I have seen before. Words between them, not so sure. Maybe it's a home made cancellation just like the ALF? I looked the ALF up and had to laugh that there is another version with reversed letters. When they initially made it they didn't think about the requirement for the letters to be reversed to be read properly (like looking at word Ambulance in your rear view mirror) and so there are apparently copies out there that are reversed as they used it for a while before replacing! You have to love that. Cheers, Neil

Anyone know what this might be? This obliterator looked familiar to me, but not an NZ one! I think it may have been applied by our cousins across the ditch - in Tasmania. Here is the one I am thinking it may be, on a Tasmanian stamp from the 1871-78 set : What do you think? Dave

Anyone know what this might be? I'm going to suggest it might be a COROMANDEL between bars and the right side either didn't make contact or overlapped another stamp thus missing the "EL" and part of bars. I will take a closer look, but has that feel. We had another one of these a few posts back so could compare with that too.

What do you think? Is it "ROMAND" of COROMANDEL with some smudging?

I managed to secure a couple of covers in a couple of different auctions recently. Nice pieces - still waiting for their physical arrival. There was also a pair of SG 1 on cover that I chased but I didn't have the $$ to bring it home - maybe next time Anyway any thoughts or insights on the covers very welcome. 1. Multiple SG 5 2. SG 3 3. SG 4 x2 and SG 9? Regards, Neil

Hey folks, Just for fun I decided a while back to build a website and share my collection. I remembered Andrew's website and thought it was pretty cool, and the recently removed Gerald Ellot's site was very cool, so I thought I would do something useful on these cold winter nights - and I always wanted to build a website! I reckon it will take me year or three to get everything up but gotta start sometime. Here's a link. A New Zealand Stamp CollectionOne of the features maybe the Tom Lee and John Watts book which is available through the site. Most of you will have a copy (CD-Rom) I'm sure but for those that don't - here it is. John Watts Book
Please - any thoughts, ideas, corrections please don't hesitate to share with me. If you want to write an article (blog) - you may already have - publish it on this site if you wish. Anyway more on my motivations and the like later. Hope you like it. It even has a logo (below) Cheers, Neil

There is quite a bit of the obliterator inking missing to the right of the cancel. It seems as though only ROMAND is showing, and that is smudged! Is it safe to assume that this obliterator was made of rubber? Dave

I love this 'project of yours Neil. First looks it looks very well done. I admire your 'objectives', and this one in particular: " The second objective is to repatriate as many items of significance and interest as I can". I love to purchase nice items from overseas as well, and get immense satisfaction in being able to assist in this area. If only my resources were greater than they are currently! lol All the best in this endeavor, and should I spot anything to comment on whilst reading through your site, I will surely let you know.
